Winging It In Motown: for Detroit Red Wings fans

It’s a new season of Red Wings hockey and a new season of WIIM Radio for your listening pleasure. To get this season preview rolling, I was hosted by the always excellent Peter as we tag-teamed the topics nearest and dearest to our hearts. Here’s what we got up to: Thoughts from Preseason: Biggest positive (and negative) surprises from the full slate of preseason games for the Wings, to include the status of the defense, Cholowski’s big step forward, the big concern about Frans Nielsen and overall team health, and the struggle with wanting the team to be good and wanting to keep on the right rebuild track. The Roster Construction: We don’t outright say it, but Grand Rapids might be more fun to watch early on than Detroit. We’ve seem Yzerman construct AHL teams like this before in Syracuse and it very much looks like the kids are going to get the kind of experience to help develop their game rather than the tired old “learn how to be an AHL champ” company line we’ve been given. Season Expectations: While neither of us expects the Wings to be contenders, there’s a lot of variance in how this season could go. They should be fun to watch for much longer than they have been in years past at least. We also delve into what we’re looking for out of the power play and what kind of leash we expect Jeff Blashill to have now that his clone Dan Bylsma is slowly morphing into him. Here’s what Peter, JJ, and Sara covered in this episode. The Draft: Moritz “lots of up” Seider was probably a reach... or not... or who cares? The Wings drafted him and now we all love him. He’s not the only kid we grabbed though. We’ll get draft reactions from the crew. The Yzermandate: Stevie fired a scout and hired his brother. Is this the new Keith Gretzky era? Is the Swedish Mafia slowly being replaced by the Yzermen? What’s the plan going forward? Free Agent Frenzy: Detroit had money to dip in the pool and spent a little bit on some stopgap pieces, which almost certainly belies the timeline. We’ll go over what the Wings did (and didn’t do) on July 1st and discuss what’s still to come. Around the League in RFAs: Plenty of money got spend, some of it was on Sebasian Aho. We finally got an offer sheet! Is that an under-utilized market inefficiency we’ve seen exploited or just a product of a situation unique to this year? Here's what Peter, JJ, Sara, and Dr. Dangles covered in this episode.  Draft Primer: Just in case ANYBODY has been living under a rock waiting for WIIM Radio to explain the basics, we’ll start off covering where we are and the tier of players the Wings can expect to be looking at with their first rounder. As an added bonus, we had a poll down in the mailbag that we will talk about. Draft Strategy: Should the Wings consider moving up or down in the first round? What about moving around by potentially moving back or using some of their later-round draft stock (and/or some of their potential cap space) to pick up some added value? The Later Rounds: We’ve talked to death about the guys expected to go early in the first, but want to take an opportunity to look deeper into the draft pool and figure out what the Wings might want to do with those later round picks to parse which guys fit those needs.
