Managing Stress: A Path to Better Heart Health

How Stress Impacts Heart Health (and Practical Ways to Manage It)

Steve discusses how daily and current world stressors can affect cardiovascular health, drawing on a recent talk he gave at the HI Lab’s Cardiovascular Disease Summit. He emphasizes that while genetics and aging can’t be changed, stress exposure and responses can be modified through exercise, mindfulness practices, cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga, stronger social support, and better sleep. He explains that chronic stress can disrupt heart rate and keep the body from entering a restorative “rest and digest” state, and encourages limiting engagement with stressful information, using reassurance practices like mantras, and making practical lifestyle adjustments for work-life balance and nutrition. He also highlights gratitude, joy, and intentional social connection as key tools to improve mental health, reduce stress, and support healthy aging.
