About Living Overseas

Today, I would like to talk a little about living overseas.

Sometimes, just because I live in another country,

Japanese friends say, “That’s amazing.”

They also say, “It sounds difficult to live abroad.”

But in reality, my daily life is not very different from when I was in Japan.

I wake up, work, eat, and go to bed.

That routine is the same wherever I live.

What is different is the language people speak.

The weather is also different.

The food is a little different too.

The scenery is different.

Rules and customs are different as well.

But apart from that, not much changes.

It’s not that I suddenly became special.

I simply live in a different place.

In Singapore, many people can speak English or Chinese.

So I think it’s easier for them to live in other countries.

Some people go to university overseas.

Some people live in another country for work.

It seems that for Singaporeans, living abroad is not as big a hurdle as it is for many Japanese people.

This might be something that feels different from the Japanese point of view.

In Japan, not so many people have a passport.

I heard that only around 17% of people have one.

Compared with other countries, that number is quite low.

So for Japanese people, someone living abroad may feel a bit unusual.

When they see someone going to an unknown place,

「すごそう」と思ったり、they may think, “That sounds amazing,”

or “That must be hard.”

But in reality, it is just daily life repeated.

It is not very different from life in Japan.

Of course, in a new place, you need to build new relationships.

That can feel a little stressful.

But in a new place, there are kind people too.

There are many people who are helpful.

If you are in Singapore and feel like living in Japan one day,

why not try living there?

You will notice both the good and the not-so-good sides of Japan — things you cannot see on a short trip.
