"What is truly good news?

When an Amalekite arrives with news of Saul's death, he expects David to celebrate the removal of his greatest enemy. Instead, David mourns. His response reveals a heart free from personal revenge and devoted instead to the honor of God and the welfare of God's people.

In this sermon, we explore David's remarkable response to Saul's death, the biblical distinction between rejoicing in God's deliverance and delighting in an enemy's suffering, and the sobering account of the Amalekite who is executed after claiming responsibility for killing the Lord's anointed. Along the way, we consider what this passage teaches about assisted suicide, the sanctity of human life, and God's authority over life and death.

Finally, this passage points us beyond David to the greater Son of David. In Samuel, what appears to be good news turns out to be tragic. In the gospel, what appears to be the greatest tragedy—the death of Christ—becomes the greatest good news ever proclaimed: forgiveness of sins, victory over Satan, and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
