Caleb Flynn Fooled His In-Laws but Not His 12-Year-Old

Two goldendoodles that sleep in the bedroom, two corgis next door, two little girls, and a neighbor's security camera all stayed silent through two gunshots. On day three of the Caleb Flynn trial, the jury heard from everyone who should have noticed. Neighbor Kimberly Bingaman testified her dogs are very vocal and stayed quiet, and her cameras recorded nothing. Ashley Flynn's mother Jill Smith said she had to shake the girls awake at 3:30 a.m. Ashley's father Todd Smith said he always thought the dogs would be the greatest defense and started asking why they never barked before he got home from Quebec.

Ohio BCI scientists testified they found no foreign DNA in the house. Caleb's prints were on the bedroom door frame and on the refrigerator police say had to be moved to open the garage door, and both bullets came from one gun that has never been found. On cross, the analyst conceded a faint trace on the truck console was too weak to read but is there, and an officer confirmed Caleb was never tested for gunshot residue and was allowed to wash his hands after fingerprinting.

The family's testimony supplied the rest. Kayla Keyt said Caleb earned more than $200,000 a year, that she showed him a spreadsheet projecting up to $400,000, and that he asked to see it again in September. A police captain showed a monthly charge on Caleb's card for an Instagram-tracking service starting that same month. Matthew Keyt said Caleb's fear two days after the shooting was losing custody of the girls.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and related charges. Tony explains what Ohio law requires the state to prove about planning, and why the last thing the jury heard from this family may matter more than any lab result.
