When “Hurry Up” Actually Makes Parkinson’s Worse

When “Hurry Up” Actually Makes Parkinson’s Worse

There are five words that can make my Parkinson’s worse almost instantly: “Bryce, we have to hurry!”

Suddenly my hands stop cooperating, my feet get slower, and my brain seems to forget what it was doing.

And somehow, the harder I try to move faster, the slower everything gets!

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I explain seven ways being rushed can make everyday life with Parkinson’s more difficult:

• Movement becomes harder: Why adding pressure can interfere with movements that already require extra concentration.

• Multitasking overload: How rushing while walking, talking, carrying things, or making decisions can increase hesitation and freezing.

• Fine motor difficulties: Why buttons, zippers, phones, and credit cards suddenly become impossible when people are waiting.

• Speech and thinking slow down: How time pressure can make finding words, answering questions, and making decisions harder.

• The emotional toll: Why feeling responsible for making everyone late can create guilt, frustration, and anxiety.

• When helping makes things worse: Why repeatedly saying "hurry up" may actually slow someone down further.

• Planning ahead: How building extra time into your routine and reducing distractions can make everyday activities easier.

And here's something I've learned:

Sometimes nobody else is rushing me. I'm rushing myself.

We remember how quickly we used to do things, and sometimes we forget to give ourselves the same patience we're asking others to give us.

You'll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen explains why helping someone with Parkinson’s sometimes means doing less, saying less, and giving them room to finish what they're doing.

Instead of saying “Hurry up!”, try asking:

“What do you need right now?”

Because sometimes we need help.

Sometimes we just need another minute.

And those aren't the same thing.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
