Is Poor Gut Health Or Sleep Issues Driving Your Depression, ADHD, And More?
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Pique Life. Instead of using a pharmaceutical drug, what if your doctor knew how to look deeper to find out what is causing your depression, ADHD, or anxiety? While there is a time and a place for drugs, they can have significant side effects and may not be as effective at correcting an underlying imbalance in the body. Functional Medicine practitioners look at gut health, genes, diet, hormones, and so much more to create a thorough healing plan. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Uma Naidoo, Dr. George Papanicolaou, and Dr. Drew Ramsey about how diet and lifestyle can be both a cause of and treatment for depression and other mental health issues. Dr. Uma Naidoo is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, professional chef, and nutrition specialist. In her role as a clinical scientist, Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in nutritional psychiatry in the US. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Naidoo is the author of This is Your Brain on Food. Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board certified in family medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Upon graduation from his residency, he joined the Indian Health Service. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. Dr. Drew Ramsey is a psychiatrist, author, farmer, and founder of the Brain Food Clinic in New York City, offering treatment and consultation for depression, anxiety, and emotional wellness concerns. He is the author of three books, most recently the award-winning cookbook Eat Complete: The 21 Nutrients That Fuel Brain Power, Boost Weight Loss, and Transform Your Health. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Pique Life. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests. Why Fatty Liver Is So Common And How To Heal It
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. “Fatty liver” literally means your liver fills with fat, which paves the way for chronic disease and inflammation. Fatty liver is a dangerous yet misunderstood disease. It is also very common, affecting 90 million Americans alone. You need a healthy liver to combat toxic junk and chemicals in your environment. A healthy liver means your body stays healthy, you don’t get sick, and you maintain plenty of energy. A fatty liver, on the other hand, has numerous repercussions including inflammation, which triggers insulin resistance and prediabetes, meaning your body deposits fat in your liver and organs, including your belly (called visceral fat). Fatty liver can also lead to more serious problems including high triglycerides, low HDL (“good” cholesterol), and high amounts of small LDL (dangerous cholesterol particles that can cause heart attacks). Fatty liver also increases your heart attack risk. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking about how to identify if you have fatty liver, what’s causing it, and how to fix it. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. You can check out a free, live demo with a Q&A or create an account at RupaHealth.com. Right now when you purchase AG1 from Athletic Greens, you will receive 10 FREE travel packs with your first purchase by visiting athleticgreens.com/hyman. Here are more details from the episode (audio version / Apple Subscriber version): What is fatty liver disease? How To Improve Your Health With Probiotics
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and InsideTracker. Your gut is your inner garden—the more good bugs you have in it the more likely it is to flourish. Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function, and, of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health. But even if you’re eating the right things, you may need some outside assistance maintaining plentiful and diverse gut bacteria. Probiotics help populate your gut with beneficial bacteria, improving your sleep, daily elimination, brain health, and so much more. In today’s episode, I talk with Dhru Purohit, Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham about probiotics, the importance of the gut microbiome starting in infancy, and why you should work with a skilled practitioner to choose the right probiotic for you. Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset. Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh is leading the work in understanding the infant microbiome. She is a nutritional scientist who helps new and expectant moms learn about creating healthy gut bugs in their babies. Dr. Shafizadeh received her Ph.D. in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis, and spends her free time "loving the guts" out of her two boys. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and InsideTracker. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. How To Use Nutrients To Support Our Brain Health
This episode is brought to you by Beekeeper’s Naturals and Athletic Greens. Your brain is an organ that’s connected to everything else happening in your body. Most of us never learn how to manage our energy and bodies. Instead, we use drugs like sugar, caffeine, and alcohol to self-medicate and manage our energy and moods. We don’t connect our behaviors and choices with how we feel. Many of us get too little good food, nutrients, light, air, water, rest, sleep, rhythm, exercise, community, love, meaning, and purpose. We’re exposed to far too much poor-quality food, stress, toxins, and allergens. But even if you manage all those things correctly, you still might not be getting the right amount of certain nutrients that support your brain and body. That’s where supplements come in. In today’s episode in my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking about how to heal our broken brains with the right nutrients. The brain is resilient and can recover and heal when given the right conditions. This episode is brought to you by Beekeeper’s Naturals and Athletic Greens. Right now, Beekeeper’s Naturals is giving my community an exclusive offer. Just go to beekeepersnaturals.com/HYMAN and enter code HYMAN to get 25% off your first order. A Roadmap To Creating Healthy Love And Relationships with Mia Lux
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and InsideTracker. Our relationships affect our health and happiness. The problem is that we’re never taught how to seek, create, nurture, and assess our relationships the same way we do our careers and bank accounts. But the cost of bad relationships on ourselves and our society truly adds up. The relationships many of us grew up around and might consider “normal” are in fact dysfunctional, creating a negative cycle we often don’t even realize we’re in. So how can we find good love, create good relationships, and keep them? That’s what today’s conversation with Mia Lux is all about. Mia merges the playful and the profound—drawing on her experience as a start-up CEO, stand-up comedian, personal growth junkie, and recovering lawyer. For over 7 years, Mia has been an international host, comedian & facilitator, specializing in designing and facilitating top wellness/personal development experiences around the world. Now, Mia is channeling this in the name of love as the Co-Founder & CEO of La Vette, a radical new platform designed to rehumanize dating in the digital era.
