Lies My Doctor Told Me, Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet, Thinking Outside The Medical Box – Dr. Ken Berry KKP 006

Today, I am lucky to have here with me a profound and highly-driven keto advocate from the medical field, Dr. Ken Berry. Although his practice is not yet warmly accepted in our society today, he is firm on his stand when it comes to the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry is the first physician in the family. It was always his childhood dream. At the age of 13, he started having severe migraines and thought he would not be fit for a medical doctor’s lifestyle. However, his condition got better during his college days and hoped that he could finally fulfill his dream. He was determined to change his way of eating when he was obese and became prediabetec at the age of 35. He knew his stressful lifestyle coupled with unhealthy eating habits contributed to his condition. Dr. Berry was further challenged to make a change in order to help his critically ill patients. His goal is to spread the truth about the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry had already published a book entitled, “Lies My Doctor Told Me” and is increasing his reach with the help of social media channels. In this episode, Dr. Berry and I talked about ketogenic diet, type 2 diabetes, the 3 pillars of health and nutrition, exercise and more. He shared his journey with living his best life starting with the paleo diet then transitioning to low-carb diet and finally the ketogenic diet. He also shed some light as to why ketogenic diet doesn’t work for other people. Moreover, tips and strategies were shared on how to get the most out of the keto diet. Tune in! [07:56] The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition He want back to dig up his medical books and lecture notes to refresh his knowledge on his nutrition training. After reading up on the materials that he was able to retrieve, he was reminded that the foundation of health is knowledge and understanding of human nutrition. The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition: 1. Eat lots of whole grain 2. Don’t eat any saturated fat. 3. Jog. [09:32] The Unexpected Weight Gain He has an exceptional training background when it comes to parenteral nutrition. However, he admits that, when it comes to feeding a healthy human being in a disease-preventive way, he was clueless. Dr. Berry guided himself with the 3 pillars and applied it in his daily life. Despite his consistent hard work for 2 months, he still gained 5-10 pounds. [10:25] Thinking Outside The Medical Doctor Box Read different works on nutrition: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert Atkins The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson He tried this new knowledge on himself starting with paleo and transitioned to a low-carb diet which got him better but still far from his health goal. Immediately felt better, lost weight, decreased inflammation. He then finally tried ketogenic diet and after 2 months he thought to offer it to his morbidly obese patients, many of which are scheduled for a gastric bypass which is a risky procedure. His patients started noticing his transformation and were curious about what he was doing. He finally recommended the ketogenic diet to his patients with the worst case of morbid obesity and they all started getting better. [12:43] Dr. Berry’s Patients on Keto Diet He monitors his patients closely since the diet was presumed to be dangerous. After 1 month, his patients would come back asking if they could do it for a longer period of time. They loved the diet and was very happy with the results Many patients, who cancelled their bariatric surgery, were coming to him because they wanted to lose fat naturally. He was very glad he found a tool that could help many others when the only option most of them had before was a bariatric surgery. He only recommended it to his sickest patients [16:28] Type 2 Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet Type 2 Diabetes is not a disease. It is one of the many ways how poison in your diet can manifest itself. Poisons: Sugar Grains Industrial seed oils Removing these poisons from the diet results to type 2 diabetes going away. [18:42] Truth about EBM: Evidence-Based Medicine or Eminence-Based Diet American Diabetes Association (ADA) claims their diet recommendation is based on zero research and it’s based on expert consensus. Dr. Berry, on the other hand, believes in true evidence based medicine (EBM) but oftentimes, no meaningful research is done on a topic which makes EBM mean something else, “Eminence Based Diet” Leading authorities in the medical field decide what is considered EBM as standard of care and there are many instances in history wherein these EBM, such as lobotomy and provision of Valium to premenopausal women, have been further proven to be dangerous and ineffective. [22:10] What Led Him to His Life Mission Dr. Berry knew he was called to reverse type 2 diabetes and obesity. His wife, Neisha, an active social media user, asked him, “How many patients do you help a day in the clinic?” and “How many patients can you help on social media?”. He had no social media presence back then other than Facebook. His wife’s question made him realize he had a big goal social media can give him a bigger platform. Dr. Berry started with creating a YouTube channel and other social media accounts [26:28] Elevated A1C VS. Elevated LDL “An elevated A1C is a shotgun pointed at your heart and an elevated LDL might be a BB gun pointed at your arm”. After reading more research on LDL, Dr. Berry says it is not a risk factor. Elevated cholesterol and elevated LDL does not increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. This elevation may be caused by an inflammation in your body and it is it’s attempt of filling in the damage done in your arteries. Your body naturally makes cholesterol. Even the brain has its own cholesterol manufacturing process. An elevated A1C, elevated triglyceride level, and a low HDL level are more important markers than an elevated LDL. Doctors who are concerned with elevated cholesterol are already 10 years behind on their readings while doctors who are alarmed by elevated LDL are 3-5 years behind. American Heart Association’s (AHA/ACC) cardiac risk calculator does not factor in the LDL level but uses triglyceride and HDL levels. [32:33] Recommendation for the Use of Statins Recommendation for the use of statins will lower LDL level but will not positively influence your 10-year cardiac risk. The medical community continues to promote the use of statins because their paradigm has not yet shifted. Some medical practitioners are gaining awareness when it comes to this issue Many doctors are still relying on recommendations given by the AHA. However, big companies and corporations heavily influence the information distributed by the association We are slowly killing ourselves by taking harmful medication [36:05] Social Media is the Key Dr. Berry intends to use of social media to help spread the word and tell people to stop poisoning themselves. People are dying everyday because of belief on a false paradigm. Social media helps him educate and tell people to stop comiting suicide and stop letting your doctors commit homicide. Being loud and obnoxious about the information will help prevent unnecessary deaths. [37:59] The Story of Dr. Simon Weiss The quote: “The way you judge someone’s stature in the medical community is the length of their white coat” and a story on Dr. Simon Weiss which illustrates Dr. Ken Berry’s advocacy Back then doctors were seen as gentlemen and it was a common assumption that gentlemen are never dirty. Mortality rate of women and children were high because of the childbirth fever caused by unsanitary practices of doctors. Dr. Weiss observed that in poorer areas where midwives facilitated child birth instead of doctors and women and children were not affected by childbirth fever because midwives do not handle dissections in the morgue. Dr. Weiss published his research but because of his short coat, he was not taken seriously by other doctors. The unsanitary practice went on for 70-80 years before another doctor discovered Dr. Weiss’ research and shed light unto it. It took another decade before more doctors caught on to the proper practice of handwashing. With this, Dr. Ken Berry stands firm with his belief on the ketogenic diet and is willing to take the risk that comes with it so that people can know the truth. [43:20] Overcoming the Powdered Butt Syndrome Powdered Butt Syndrome is when people, for example your senior, don’t take you seriously no matter what you say or evidence you show. A third party source may be helpful with conveying the information to your family and friends which is what many people do. As with Dr. Berry, his videos takes a big part in encouraging people to listen and understand the truth about the ketogenic diet. [45:42] Why Ketogenic is Not Working for Other People? After enthusiastically getting in to keto, some people slack off and allow gradually themselves more and more carb loaded food items. This reduces fat loss and increases inflammation. People should have a friend, coach, that can re-check their diet Document what you’re eating and consult someone with knowledgeable on keto to figure out what you’re doing or eating wrong. Don’t easily trust and simply rely on what big food names claim when it comes to being healthy because there are loopholes they go through to make their products seem healthy enough. Big food corporations only care about making a profit and will do all things just to cut down on cost. [49:22] Dining in Restaurants Don’t be afraid to let restaurants know of the ingredients and food items that you’re avoiding in a keto diet. Tip: Have a laminated small laminated information card stating that “I’m allergic to sugar in all forms, all grains, and the following oils. Please do not include it in my meals”. As more people do this, big chain restaurants can go bankrupt or they can evolve to meet people’s need for real and safe human food. Be willing to go the extra penny for quality food. Accepting bad food because it’s cheap is as good as voting for it. [51:53] PEO (Parent Essential Oils) Solution by Dr. Brian Peskin PEO Solution: Conquering Cancer, Diabetes and Heart Disease with Parent Essential Oils is the collaborative effort of Dr. Brian S. Peskin and Dr. Robert Jay Rowen. Their combined insights will give you state-of-the-art science with new tools to easily become and remain lean-for-life, energized, and disease-free. [52:19] Fat in a Cellular Level Every cell has a membrane and this membrane uses fat as integral part. Eating high fat food gives your body sufficient building blocks for building healthy cell membranes. [52:50] Restaurants and Their Oil Use Study shows a plate of french fries cooked in canola oil resulted to 132 days of membrane inflammation. Restaurants use cooking oils, such as canola and soybean oil, that easily oxidize and they don’t always change their cooking oils to cut down cost. These oils become deadlier as they get reused and get absorbed by the food you eat. [53:44] Consuming Healthy Oils As people develop healthier cell membranes, they can stay longer in the sun because they are now more able to form melanin. This prevents them from easily getting sun burnt and help them develop a tan instead. Even cells of other organs have cell membranes and they also need fat to form and function well. Food habit of consuming industrial seed and vegetable oil will contribute to the activation of bad genes. [55:16] Shopping for the Right Food Products Always read labels and check the ingredients of what you’re buying. If you’re not familiar with a word, search online what it is. “Generally Regarded As Safe” only means it won’t kill you quickly. [56:42] Exercise and Weight Loss “Exercise is a terrible approach to weight loss. If you’re goal is to lose weight, joining the gym is a waste of time and money.” Meaningful research show that exercising and moving more is a terrible strategy to lose fat. If you want to lose excess fat, change your diet. [58:00] Experts (PhDs, Scientists, Dietitians, Nutritionists, and Doctors) on Keto as a Fad Diet Most of today’s experts have the same thinking with doctors back in Dr. Weiss’ time who did not believe that handwashing was essential. They have a hard time accepting the truth or admitting that they are wrong. One of the many reasons may be losing part of their (online) following. Some may be afraid of losing they research support and funding. It is ignorance to think it’s possible to calculate one’s specific caloric needs through weight, height, and gender. Big corporations pay experts like them to convince the consumer that it’s alright to consume bad food items because they packed in small containers. Beware of people who promote “Eat more, move less”. [01:02:55] Patients Who Found Success in Keto The healthiest patients with the least chronic diseases are the ones who consume food products with the least amount of prohibited ingredients on the label. Eldest patient who passed away at 102 was in very good health, with an alert mind and a strong body. Majority of diet was made of vegetables and meat. Babies or kids who are fed by their parents with real whole foods did not develop eczema, allergies, and even acne. They consume one-ingredient food. [01:05:33] What Dr. Berry Is Most Excited About We’re close to the tipping point of having the low-carb keto carnivore diet as a norm now more than how where we were back in the 70s or 80s. Nurse Jackie Eberstein, who worked closely with Dr. Robert Atkins, is continuing to raise awareness about the Low-Carb Ketogenic Diet. Know more here. Perfect health, for him, is being strong enough to enjoy and play together with his great grand kids. AND MUCH MORE! Up to 70 billion cells need to be recycled each day; autophagy is the process for this to happen. How autophagy works (refrigerator analogy) An alarming stastisic about Americans, and why most are in a constant fed state, never experiencing autophagy. mTor (anabolic growth) vs autophagy (cellular breakdown and repair), and how they have an inverted relationship The problems that can occur when you are in a constant fed state The number 2 benefit: rise in stem cells. How a rise in stem cells help to heal old injuries (knee pain, back pain, etc) The number 3 benefit: A boost of ketones. How ketones protect the genes we are born with. How ketones down regulate inflammation, allowing our hormones to communicate to our cells. How ketones help you achieve the ultimate goal of metabolic flexibility. Why ketones are a cleaner fuel source than glucose (firewood vs gas stove analogy) The keto diet turns on the SIRT1 longevity gene The number 4 benefit: Energy diversion. How fasting provides you with energy and blood flow to heal the body, and crush the day. Study by Dr. Zach Bush which showed it took 14 hours to digest a standard American diet meal. The number 5 benefit: Hormone optimization. How our hormones and our cells communicate, and why having more sensitive hormones through fasting has amazing benefits for us. How inflammation through being in a constant fed state creates cellular inflammation, and results in our hormones not being able to communicate to our cells. Why we don't have a lack of hormones problem, we have an inflammation problem. The number 5 benefit: Resets the microbiome. The problem of leaky gut, and how fasting gives your digestive system a break. How a compromised digestive system doesn't allow the nutrition you eat to be assimilated properly. The number 7 benefit: Resets the DNA, turns off bad genes. Shocking Benefits of Coffee, Tips on Buying Coffee, Coffee & Diabetes - Andrew Salisbury of Purity Coffee: KKP 27

Who doesn’t love a good cup of coffee? Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. Aside from its taste, people love it because of its high levels of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients. According to studies, 63% of American consume coffee daily. I, myself, am included in that.   Today’s episode is all about coffee. I am joined by Andrew Salisbury, co-founder of Purity Coffee. Andrew Salisbury was inspired to start Purity Coffee® after learning the truth about coffee and its positive impact on overall health and wellness. At Purity, their goal is to present the original scientific research that clearly proves that coffee is beneficial to human health and give people a new reason to drink coffee. In this episode, he shares and discusses some of that.   Coffee’s health benefits have been extensively researched and generally agreed upon. Using the words of Andrew, “Coffee is good for you. But, it can be made better.” Purity Coffee is an organic certified, specialty grade, high in antioxidants and free of contaminants coffee. Listen and learn about the benefits of coffee and the dangers of the wrong type of coffee. Andrew also shares tips on buying the perfect coffee! Sit tight, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy this episode!   Learn more about Purity Coffee here.   Get your bag of Purity coffee beans here: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com   In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:25] Andrew’s journey to the coffee industry Andrew’s background has nothing to do with coffee. His interest in coffee started to rise about 4 years ago when his wife was having some health issues, yet she doesn’t want to give up coffee. He was introduced to the professors of Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies where he found out that the benefits of coffee according to researchers and scientists are very different from what the general public know about it. They introduced Andrew to one of the top coffee scientists in the world, Adriana Franca from University of Brazil. Challenges on building a coffee company: Finding the right coffee beans, source and process. Reasons not to turn it into a business were more abundant than the other way around. Achieving high number of chlorogenic acids comparable to the top coffee brands in US   [6:00] Coffee and Health: What’s in your coffee? Drinking coffee is one of the healthiest things you can do to protect yourself against major diseases, increase physical performance, enhance brain function and contribute to longevity. People don’t buy coffee based on health. Thus, coffee producers don’t keep in mind health in their production. The big drivers of coffee today are: Cost Convenience Taste Coffee is the most heavily treated plant (pesticides) on the planet, next to tobacco. Coffee beans are sold by weight. Farmers spray their beans with water to make it heavier. Higher moisture content encourage growth of molds and mycotoxins. Dark roasted coffee beans are the most flavorful but has the least amount of antioxidants. As one of the well-researched topics on the planet, there are about 19,000 studies done on coffee and health. Yet, the vast majority of these findings have yet to reach the general public Coffee’s health benefits have been extensively researched and generally agreed upon. Coffee is good for you. But, it can be made better.   [10:48] Tips on how to buy coffee Ask for a specialty grade organic coffee. Look for medium roast coffee (city or full city). Under roasted coffee have higher levels of acrylamide. Over roasted coffee have burnt compounds and lower levels of antioxidants. Make sure that the coffee fresh. Antioxidants drop off dramatically after 20 days of roasting.   [13:28] Beyond Organic: Purity Coffee The Purity Process: aims to improve people’s health through coffee At Purity Coffee, they only use handpicked coffee. Large scale coffee producers do not handpick coffee beans. This method is very prone to spreading of molds and mycotoxins. Poor production practices can compromise the health attributes of coffee at nearly every step in the process. Purity Coffee test for molds, mycotoxins and pesticide residue. TA defined roasting protocol is practiced at Purity Coffee. For every harvest, they roast coffee on a condition that produces the highest level of antioxidants. Purity Coffee is always fresh.               [18:53] Coffee and Diabetes Statistics: 25 million Americans have diabetes. 81 million Americans are prediabetic. Drinking coffee prevents liver diseases and type II diabetes. Coffee is the number 1 source of antioxidants. According to studies, if you drink between 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day, your risk of developing Type II Diabetes is reduced by 45%.     [24:48] Surprising benefits of coffee Coffee helps in gout, heart disease, and tooth decay. Coffee is beneficial for people with HIV, in terms of longevity. If you have BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations, coffee has a real big benefit. Drinking coffee is one of the healthiest things you can do to protect yourself against major diseases, increase physical performance, enhance brain function and contribute to longevity.     [27:00] Misconceptions about coffee Coffee is acidic. Stomach problems related to drinking coffee happens with low quality coffee, not acidity. Stale coffee have oils and lipids that are rancid. Tea has greater health benefits than coffee. Coffee has seven times antioxidants of that of green tea.     WHERE PURITY COFFEE HEADS TO AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Purity Organic Coffee - A Health Conscious Coffee Company Learn more about Purity Coffee: The Purity Standard Purity Coffee: An investment in your health The Purity Process Independent Laboratory Tests Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies Relevant Articles: Why Coffee Is Good For Your Health: Dr. Sanjiv Chopra Explains Coffee & Health Coffee & You   Get your bag of Purity coffee beans here: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     This podcast is for information purposes only. Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Today’s episode is very close to my heart as I have a personal experience with diabetes. My father developed Type II Diabetes and I have watched him struggle with this disease. It was a very difficult time of my life. Ever since he passed away five years ago, I set out and study diabetes and why my fathers doctors’ advice did not work.   I came across the book The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung where he explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. The information that I now know would’ve saved my father’s life. Which is why I fully support Dr. Jason Fung’s, today’s guest, on his mission to spread as much information on diabetes and intermittent fasting to help as many people as possible.   Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist. He’s a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. He has written three best-selling health books and he co-founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program.   Dr. Fung works with Team Diet Doctor where they make it simple for people to understand and implement intermittent fasting, to improve their health.   In this episode, we break down every single thing you need to know about calories, obesity, diabetes and intermittent fasting. Sit tight and enjoy!   This episode is sponsored by the world's healthiest coffee beans, Purity coffee. Get your beans delivered to your door: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:17] How Dr. Fung got into the health space, particularly nephrology As a Math and Science person, Dr. Fung initially thought he would pursue the field of engineering. He then decided that being a physician was more fitted to his style. After years in the university, he figured that he was also invested in doing research. As a physician, he can help people and do some research at the same time. In choosing a specialty, Dr. Fung felt that Nephrology suited his personality better. Nephrology is a complex specialty which is sort of a thinking-person speciality unlike cardiology which is more of an action specialty (i.e surgery)   [4:13] Diabetes, Obesity and Intermittent Fasting The most common and important cause of kidney disease is Type II Diabetes which is closely related to weight gain and obesity. Treating kidney diseases with medications is the least effective way to treat people. You have to look at the root cause of the disease in order to be successful in treating it. Which is why, for Dr. Fung, the real question was “what causes weight gain?” Nutrition is not considered part of the medical specialty which explains why doctors depend on medications to treat certain illnesses. Second question: What are you gonna do about it? Obesity was not existent during the 1970s. Now, 70% of Americans are obese. Intermittent Fasting: People suffering with Type II Diabetes for 20+ years immediately felt better by intermittent fasting. Fasting is less fun that eating pizza and doughnuts. Fasting is tough work. It is important to give people undergoing intermittent fasting the support and education they need.   [12:30] The Calorie Debacle Coca-Cola created a group called the Global Energy Balance Network to keep people focused on calories. They wanted people to think that 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to 100 calories of Coca-Cola which is completely wrong. If you think that if you can eat cookies, drink coke and exercise then, you’ll be healthy, you are wrong. But, Coca-Cola wants you to think that this is right. Hormones control hunger, telling our body when to eat and when to stop. Different calorie sources elicit different hormonal responses. Diet and exercise are totally different things. Diet is what you eat. It affects the liver mostly. Exercise is mostly about skeletal muscles. Calorie is not a physiologic term. There’s no calorie-receptors in our body. We think that excessive intake of calories causes obesity. We think that this is a caloric imbalance. Too many ‘calories in’ compared to too few ‘calories out’ leads to weight gain. This Calorie Balance model of obesity has been drilled into us since childhood. Read more about the Calorie Debacle here.     [18:40] Intermittent Fasting as a reasonable alternative to treat patients Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are not as famous as low-carb diet. Jason Fung received a lot of backlash when he started to introduce intermittent fasting to his patients. Because of IF, patients were getting better. At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that. Other doctors started to notice the success of IF. Through his book, The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good.   [25:55] Why the common treatments for type 2 diabetes seem to make things worse Type II Diabetes is a reversible disease. The standard treatment of Type II diabetes focused on getting the sugar down by medications. Doctors should’ve focused on the patient’s diet to help them lose weight because if you lose weight, your diabetes gets better. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity and he wanted to do the same for type 2 diabetes through his book The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally He explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. People cannot just make a decision to burn more fat calories, or to feel less hungry. These are physiological issues and must be addressed via physiology.   [31:49] Dr. Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program The IDM program helps people reach their health goals through intermittent fasting and simple-to-follow time-restricted eating strategies. It’s a structured digital lifestyle intervention developed by Megan Ramos and Dr. Jason Fung that provides you with all the education and support you need to succeed. At least several thousands of people have gone through the Intensive Dietary Management program and the number keeps adding up.   For 2019 years, people have already been talking about fasting and they don’t talk about it as a terrible thing. Fung clarifies that he didn’t invent intermittent fasting. He just started talking about it because it seems logical to him.   [37:14] Guinness World Record on the Longest Recorded Fast In the 1971 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Barbieri's 382-day fast was recognized as the longest recorded. The most important thing is that people feel well throughout their entire fasting. For 365 days a year, 3 meals a day, you are taking a total of 1000 meals per year. If you do a 7-day fast, you’re going to miss 21 of that 1000.
