For most people, if they go from the standard American diet to a raw vegan diet, they will lose a pound a day. Eventually, Daniel and his brothers become raw vegan icons. However, the diet stopped working. Unfortunately, Daniel’s testosterone was so low that the doctor was ready to prescribe testosterone right there and then. Instead, Daniel ate a piece of salmon and woke up with morning wood for the first time in a long time. Now, Daniel has a podcast called Breaking Normal. After graduating from NWHSU, Dr. Caitlin and her husband moved to Denver CO and opened their first chiropractic office. Only a couple of months into practice, they both noticed that their health began to decline. Her husband gained thirty pounds in a month, despite being physically active and "eating healthy," and Caitlin noticed that her energy and brain clarity took a turn for the worst. In their quest to find out what was going on, they came across post-graduate training in functional endocrinology and clinical nutrition. After finding out the root causes of their issues, and applying the knowledge they learned, the symptoms "magically" disappeared. [00:30] About Dr. Caitlin Caitlin had her tonsils and adenoids removed at the age of 7 because of chronic strep. She had eight adult teeth pulled because "she didn't have room in my mouth for all of them" (four were wisdom teeth.) Plus, Dr. Caitlin had four GINORMOUS cavitations where her wisdom teeth were supposed to be. Needless to say, Dr. Caitlin finally has completely balanced hormones. However, it took looking at her mouth to figure out her hormone issues. The mouth is a prominent source of toxic material. [04:45] About Cavitations Cavitations are holes in a jawbone. Your gums heal, but the bone never fills in. Cavitations are like a cave for nasty bacteria to cause havoc. The bacteria has free reign to go wherever they need in your body. Our mouth is the gateway to our gut. So what happens in your mouth will transfer to the gut. Plus, what happens in one end can affect the other. The big problem with cavitations is that it’s a constant stressor on your immune system. Caitlin had four cavitations – one got so bad that the doctor was worried they might break her jaw. The chance of having a cavitation in the spots of wisdom teeth is 77%. There is a safe way to get your wisdom teeth pulled in order to prevent a cavitation from forming, you just need to find the right surgeon. [10:45] How to Test for Cavitations Unfortunately, standard x-rays do not show infected jawbones. When you are looking for infections, you have to get a dental cone-beam. Cone-beams are 3D scans of your jaw. Problems in your mouth can cause tonsil and sinus issues. A holistic dentist will know the safest and most effective way to help their patients.   [14:45] What to Ask Your Dentist About Cavitations First, make sure that your dentist has a cone-beam scanner. Also, know that even if a small infection is showing, there is a potential that it will be bigger than the scan. [17:25] Why Silver-Fillings Are A Problem    Silver-fillings are a touchy subject for a lot of people. Unfortunately, most silver-fillings are 45% – 55% mercury by weight. The rest of the composition is between other metals. Depending on where your dentist gets the silver-filling from, there will be a difference between the mercury levels. Most people know that mercury is a toxin. It’s one of the most highly toxic substances on earth. Our silver fillings will get aggravated and create off-gas. The off-gas is the problem. In older fillings, the mercury will drop to 30%. The mercury goes to our brains, our nerves, or our fat cells. Our bodies become so inflamed from the off-gassing. Get the silver fillings appropriately removed. It’s safer to keep the silver fillings in your mouth than get them removed by a traditional dentist. [30:00] How Mercury Can Play A Role On Keto And Fasting Some people still can’t lose weight because of mercury. If mercury is in the brain, our thyroids may not work properly. It also will control our fat-burning hormones. When mercury is in our brain, it will store the fat in our body as a life-saving measure. [32:20] Asking Your Dentist About Filling Removals   What to ask your dentist: Do you use non-latex gloves and a barrier? Do you have a mercury separator? Do you use a charcoal solution? Do you completely drape the patient? Do you have your own source of oxygen? Do you remove mercury fillings in big chunks versus little pieces? [33:45] What To Do After Getting Your Fillings Removed The off-gas has made a hole somewhere. Just because you have the fillings removed, your mercury hasn’t left. Make sure you find a practitioner that can help you properly detox. Everybody should have a customized approach to their detox. Removing mercury from your brain will take years. [39:10] The Importance of Ketosis and Fasting on Detox Our body gets into a routine, and then it stops working. Cycling detox is so essential to break a routine. Make sure that we are not intoxicating ourselves more with the foods that we are eating. Grains are useless – we get so few vitamins from them. The foods that we are eating need to be clean. Ketosis is a cleaner burn, and it means we aren’t relying on sugar. Our body can utilize ketosis better than sugar. When we have excess sugar, our hormones will go out of whack. Make sure that you are cycling your food. Not just between ketosis and fasting, but also eating seasonally. [00:55] About Dr. Sonners Sonners regained the feeling in his foot after using hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Needless to say, Dr. Sonners bought a chamber and brought it home. Eventually, his foot completely recovered. Before hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Dr. Sonners couldn’t even stand on his foot and had no motor control. [04:20] About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy All of our cells need oxygen. Most of us will be 98% - 100% oxygen saturated. We are limited to how much oxygen we can carry. Hyperbaric allows for a more significant amount of oxygen to run through our blood. [06:15] How Our Mitochondria Helps Us The mitochondrion is a little part inside of our cells – they need energy. For our brains to create thoughts, it needs energy. All of our cells have mitochondria to build energy, so the cells of those tissues can do its job. Improving your mitochondria is enormous. It is the cornerstone of improving the quality of life and longevity simultaneously. Running on fat is a clean burn. Magnesium will help make your mitochondria work better. Red light and oxygen will also assist with giving your mitochondria energy. [09:45] Why You May Lack Oxygen You may need more oxygen if you have lung issues or heart issues. Anytime you have an injury, there will be damage to your capillaries. Then, the oxygen will not be able to get through. With hyperbaric, the oxygen will be able to travel through plasma. As long as there is liquid flow, there will be oxygen exchange through plasma using hyperbaric. [12:50] What Oxygen Can Do For COVID-19    COVID-19 is attacking lung tissue and resulting in a difficulty to breathe. Oxygen is not getting into our respiratory system. Whenever we see oxygen levels dropping, people assume it’s a lung issue. However, the oxygenation might be the problem. COVID-19 might be attacking the hemoglobin. All of a sudden, the hemoglobin is inefficient at carrying the oxygen. What are other ways we can be oxygenating people? Dr. Sonners says we should avoid the need for ventilators all together. [17:10] How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work? You are inside a tube. The chamber fills with air or oxygen. As it is filling, you need to make sure your ears are equalizing. People read a book, take a nap, or meditate. The average session is sixty-minute sessions. [18:50] The Role Oxygen Plays on Reducing Inflammation Oxygen will help regain normal flow in the damaged tissues. This, alone, will improve inflammation. Our bodies are constantly regulating chemicals. Hyperbaric oxygen will help lower inflammatory chemicals. If we can improve how much energy the body is making, we can improve the tissue function. [22:20] Other Ways to Get Oxygen Flowing in the Blood All oxygen therapies have a place. Exercise with oxygen therapy is a great tool. Ozone is another excellent tool. We need oxygen! In many cases, we need more oxygen regularly so that our system can become better and more efficient. Some simple things you can do: Breathing techniques Cold immersions Cryotherapy [26:45] Why We Need to Revolutionize Health Care We suppress the body’s ability to express itself and block the messages our body is trying to tell us. Oxygen doesn’t cure anything – it provides a nutrient for our body to heal itself. We need to allow our body to heal itself and create an internal environment that is essential for the healing process. Oxygen therapy is simple; our cells already know what to do with it. Oxygen therapy needs to be on the front line. [30:10] Practical Body Hacks for Energy The most effective body hacks are recreating what we should be getting naturally. Red light therapy is a fantastic tool. We are getting way too much blue light from spending too much time inside. Also, we avoid the sun. In reality, we need responsible sun exposures. Breathing exercises and grounding while outside will also help energy levels. [34:20] The Role of Oxygen on Brain Disease   The oxygen will heal damaged circulation in the brain. Then, Cynthia worked with cardiology. When Cynthia became a parent, she found her child had eczema. This led Cynthia to learn more about nutrition. [06:40] Why Cynthia Recommends Intermittent Fasting People have been conditioned to believe that they need to eat in the morning. However, our bodies are not designed to be eating all day long. When we are going against convention, we need the confidence to say BS. The cereal companies will benefit when they convince us that we need to eat breakfast garbage. Our bodies are designed to fast, feast, and fast again. Snacking is making us fat. [11:50] How To Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Each meal needs to have protein and healthy fats first. Carbs should be the non-processed variety. We have to stabilize our blood sugar first. Bacon, eggs, and avocado is a great example of fat-filled breakfast. If you are hungry within an hour of eating, your macros are off. Once you get your blood sugar stable, then you can move onto the concept of fasting. If you can’t sleep through the night, then you can’t lose weight. Also, if you are stressed, then you can’t lose weight. If a woman starts losing their period because of a fast, then the fast is too much for their body. [15:30] The Best Benefits of Fasting Mental clarity is Cynthia’s favorite benefit of fasting. She likes to know that she has loads of energy. The improved digestive process is Cynthia’s second favorite benefit. Lastly, the benefits of autophagy are fantastic. People are attracted to fasting because of weight loss; however, they find out that they feel so much better too. [17:20] Why We Need to Focus on Our Inner Work    Inner work is what keeps us sane. We need to be aware of limiting beliefs, our negative thoughts, and where our energy is going. “Our thoughts become our actions.” -Cynthia Thurlow Mindset is the most important thing that we possess. [21:20] How to Build a Mental Six-Pack You need high-quality sleep in a cold, darkroom. Physical activity in the morning is critical. Cynthia enjoys drinking tea – it is beneficial for boosting autophagy. What are you going to do for your brain? Cynthia is always listening to a book or listening to a podcast. Coldwater therapy will also assist with your mental six-pack. [25:20] How to Build Confidence Building confidence requires being in tune with your passions. Take time each day to be inspired by other people. Creating a plan will help with your confidence. Cynthia says the best investments she has made in her business are the big-ticket ones. Sometimes you just have to leap. Ever since college, he's been writing his blog www.siimland.com that includes articles and tutorials about intermittent fasting, ketogenic dieting, meditation, cold thermogenesis, taking saunas, self-discipline, morning routines, and everything related to becoming a high performing individual. At the moment, Siim Land is involved with writing books, doing public speaking, creating content on social media, working with coaching clients, running a podcast, and much more. [00:30] About Siim Land Siim isn’t a huge risk-taker. Siim realized that you have to be responsible for your overall life and what you want to accomplish. He knew he needed to suck it up and be his own supervisor. Siim took a leap of faith and didn’t go for a regular job after college. Instead of wasting time with a “regular” job, Siim started his blog, went full-time into the online world, and wrote books. [06:30] The Balance Between mTOR and Autophagy mTOR is your growth pathway in the body that promotes muscle growth and cell replication. Autophagy is cell recycling and breakdown. It is the process of removing old and worn out cell particles that accumulate. Autophagy is a trendy term. However, there are negative side effects to it. Autophagy can promote viruses and cancers, as well. The goal is to figure out a balance between mTOR and autophagy. At the end of the day, we want our bodies to function with balance. [09:50] How to Benefit From Autophagy It will depend on the individual, their goals, and their energy balance. If someone has diabetes, then their body could benefit from more autophagy. Fasting will increase autophagy. If you need more autophagy, then you can fast for longer without the autophagy process becoming damaging for you. If you do not need autophagy, fasting for long periods of time can be detrimental. Daily eating and fasting can regulate autophagy levels. [13:50] How to Activate Autophagy You do not have to fast in order to activate autophagy. Exercise will activate autophagy. Saunas and cold baths will turn on the pathways and have a similar effect. There are things like coffee and teas that can activate autophagy. Different kinds of vegetables, herbs, and spices will also mimic some aspects of fasting. [19:15] Why We Should Focus on Building Lean Muscle The more muscle you have, the more you can handle carbohydrates. If you have more muscle, you can lose fat more efficiently. Lean muscle will improve your overall life. You will be able to lift things and be more self-sustainable. In the later years of life, it’s more important to gain muscle mass. As you get older, it becomes more challenging to build muscle and maintain it. However, it’s essential to slow the aging process. [24:15] Siim’s Fasting Schedule Siim eats once a day. When Siim works out, he will also drink a protein shake. That way, he is still giving his muscles enough amino acids. Plus, it helps stimulate muscle growth. Siim uses regular whey protein. It’s the most available form of protein, and it’s easy to digest. Usually, Siim does a longer fast a few times a year. This year, Siim has not been doing long fasts. His travels have been canceled or rescheduled. Usually, Siim does extended fasts on the road. It might not be a good idea to fast during a pandemic because your immune system will take a small dip during the extended fast. In the short-term, your immune system might get weaker during the fast. [30:00] How to Break a Fast Without Gaining Weight If you have a bad diet, fasting will not help. You still need to be mindful of what you are eating. Fasting makes it easier to not count calories. A lack of sodium can cause death during an extended fast. A short fast will not cause any deficiencies. Breaking a fast with salt will keep you satiated. Also, stress can be a factor in controlling your appetite. [33:15] The Difference Between Superficial Hunger and Actual Hunger Superficial hunger is short-term. This hunger is all about cravings. If you are hungry, you would want to eat vegetables and fruits. Dehydration will make you hungry. Drink water to determine if you are actually hungry. Hunger fluctuates all the time. Go for a walk and wait to see if your hunger persists. If you are feeling uncomfortable, then you may want to break a fast. [35:30] How to Determine If You Are Getting Autophagy   You can determine autophagy through a muscle biopsy lab. However, you can also predict autophagy with some signs: An increase in ketones. If insulin is high, then autophagy will be shut down. If you are in deep ketosis, that means autophagy is activated. Metabolic health is a good predictor. [39:50] Siim’s Favorite Health Tool Fasting is the most cost-effective strategy because it is free. Everyone has to be mindful of not overdoing fasting. AND MUCH MORE!
