Dr Carrie Jones: Keto For Women, Dealing w/ Heavy Periods, How to Increase Morning Energy: KKP 78
Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 78 with Dr. Carrie Jones Today, I am lucky to have here with me, Dr. Carrie Jones, a functional medicine women's health and hormone doctor. Dr. Carrie Jones believes in the importance of both men and women understanding their hormones in a simplified manner so they can feel more empowered to take control of their health, especially when they are told everything is "normal." Still, they don't feel "normal." Dr. Carrie is a Naturopathic Physician with a Master's in Public Health, having over 12 years in the field of functional and integrative medicine. As Adjunct Faculty for the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), she has taught courses in both Gynecology and Advanced Endocrinology. Dr. Carrie has been the Medical Director for two large integrative clinics in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Carrie is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the most cutting edge hormone test on the market, the DUTCH Test. As a result, Dr. Carrie consults with the most fantastic health care practitioners all over the world on the hormone status of their patients, and lecture/teach/frequently write on the same topic. Understanding adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormones are complicated. Dr. Carrie's job is not to judge. Her job is to educate and empower. In this episode, Dr. Carrie Jones speaks about common women's health issues. Lack of energy is a common complaint which could be due to a variety of issues. It is essential to get morning sunlight to combat the lack of energy. If you do not have access to sunlight, Dr. Carrie says to get a full-spectrum light. Then, Carrie explains the importance of healthy fats on our hormones. If women are not eating healthy fats, they stop ovulating, their skin breaks out, and their hair is in poor health. Later, Dr. Carrie advises on how to prevent constipation and heavy periods. [00:45] About Dr. Carrie Jones Carrie always knew she wanted to get into the healthcare industry. In Portland, Dr. Carrie found naturopathic medicine. She learned all the naturopathic principles, diet, lifestyle, sleep, and risk-factor mitigation. Carrie uses a lot of herbal medication, essential oils, and acupuncture. She does not put herself in any specific box. There are a time and a place for surgery and antibiotics. [05:25] The Most Common Problem With Women’s Health There are metabolic and hormonal problems. Most women’s issues will fall into one of these two categories. A majority of women complain about their energy. Dr. Carrie says there is a lot of reasons for low energy. It can be cortisol, B12, thyroid, poor sleep, etc. Dr. Carrie does a series of tests to determine what could be causing low energy. [07:50] The Importance of Morning Sunlight Morning sunlight is light and day difference. Open your curtains. The sunshine in your eyes will wake up your brain. You have twenty to thirty minutes when you switch from unconscious to alertness. If you have overcast, it’s still okay. If it’s dark when you wake up, you will need a full-spectrum light. It will give you the sensation of being outside. Turn it on for ten minutes to a few hours. You want it within eye view – don’t just set it on the counter and walk away. When you are getting ready, set it on the bathroom counter. [15:15] Teas for Adrenal Health and Morning Energy Licorice blends and other supportive herbs. Detox teas are typically a joke. However, many detox teas have nutritive and supportive supplements. Every morning, Dr. Carries drinks green tea. Jasmine green tea is her favorite. Midmorning, Dr. Carrie drinks macha tea. [17:00] The Role Healthy Fats Play With Our Hormones Cholesterol is the backbone of all our healthy hormones. If you don’t eat fat, a lot of things can happen to your body: You won’t ovulate, so you can’t get pregnant. Your skin will break out. Your hair will be too greasy or too dry. Fat will make hormones and increase cellular health. Athletes will often not have their periods. However, it is completely destroying their hormones. Which will also make it tough on the brain, skin, and hormones. [21:35] Dr. Carrie’s Favorite Fats and Least Favorite Fats Carrie responds well to olive-oil, avocados, and fish oil. Bad fats are things like fried foods. Eating a basket of fries will not make you feel healthy. Avoid industrial seed oils. Do the best you can and take baby steps. [25:00] About DUTCH (Dried Urine Test For Comprehensive Hormones) It’s a test in which you need to urinate on paper four or times a day. The test is handy because it will alter depending on your circadian rhythm. It will test your hormones and where your hormones are going. Our hormones have to go somewhere. We can be proactive when we learn our results from this test. [31:40] Preventing Constipation Hydration is huge. Most people are underhydrated. Diet is also essential. We lack in fiber. Eat fiber and vegetables to move your stool. Everything can be done through diet and lifestyle changes. Get good sleep. When we are not sleeping well, we do not wake up repaired, and it slows our systems down. [36:10] Eating the Keto Diet Without Restricting Hormones Hormones will tank out if women strictly eat keto. Women might not be doing the diet correctly. However, doing 100% keto will affect some women. Seven days before the cycle, progesterone should be the highest. People will need flexibility with the diet whose hormones are out of whack. [41:50] Preventing Heavy Periods Heavy periods can happen because of low progesterone, iron deficiency, or low thyroid. A lot of women are not in tune with their cycle. Some women don’t know if they are releasing eggs. When we have enough progesterone, our bleeding is easy and straightforward. Some women have too much estrogen. This will result in heavy periods and lots of clots. Find out if you ovulate. Track temperatures and look at symptoms. If you want to ovulate, you need B vitamins. [47:00] Post-Menopausal Women Once the ovaries are done, estrogen and progesterone get low. Be diligent about your stress response, self-care, and sleep cycle. Women will need to be more diligent post-menopause. If you have always had the same kind of diet, start changing up your diet. AND MUCH MORE! How Much Fish Oil Is Too Much? Research on Fish Oil With Dr Jeff Matheson: KKP 75
Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Dr. Jeff Matheson, co-founder of an all-natural migraine and headache centre, which promotes a non-narcotic approach to pain and headache management. Plus, Dr. Jeff Matheson is the co-founder and medical director of Pure Life Science. Dr. Jeff Matheson successfully practiced medicine in emergency departments across Canada and internationally, from Ontario, Newfoundland, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He later was appointed Medical Director of Med-EmergInc in 1998, a company dedicated to staffing underserved hospitals in Canada. Dr. Matheson has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia and well as Oceania. According to Dr. Matheson, “traveling is the best education!” Dr. Matheson is an enthusiastic believer, as well as being immersed in other cultures. Similarly, if one does not listen to patients, one won’t hear what is necessary to understand the patient’s problem, i.e., the patient’s “culture.” It is with this ability to listen and empathize with the patients that Dr. Matheson allows an accurate diagnosis and develop sustainable solutions, optimizing health, and patient outcomes. If a solution cannot be determined, resources will be dedicated, through the involvement of alternative care specialists, ascertaining the best possible treatment for the patient by trying to treat causes, not just manage symptoms. In this episode, Dr. Matheson opens up the show discussing his introduction to the ketogenic diet and how exactly quality fats will promote health. Dr. Matheson dives deep into the relationship between the cell membrane and our DNA. Plus, he speaks about the troubles of fish oil and why we should never take the supplement. Stay tuned to hear Dr. Matheson reveal other damaging fats for our bodies and all about his Pure Form Omegas. PureForm Plant Based Omegas: http://bit.ly/2OL0FWU . [05:45] About Dr. Matheson Matheson realized there was no standardization for pain management in Canada. He created a standardization; now, all pain clinics need to use his system. Matheson had all sorts of pain himself. After trying a specific diet, all of the pain melted away. Then, he started prescribing the diet to his patients, who had similar results. Now, Dr. Matheson wants to introduce people to the proper fats for our bodies. Bad fats can harm you just as much as carbohydrates can. [11:10] How Quality Fats Promote Health The structure of the cell is based on fat. The cell membrane is a fatty membrane. If you do not have a membrane, then you do not have a cell. If we are putting bad fats in our bodies, then we will have a weak cell membrane. How does the cell membrane interact with the rest of the cell? The mitochondria are also made up of fats – it is loaded with the membrane. Unhealthy cell membranes will result in lethargy. [13:40] Relationship Between the Cell Membrane and our DNA 25% - 33% of your cell membrane is made up of omega-6. 40% of your mitochondria membrane is made up of omega-6. 100% of your cardiolipin is made up of omega-6. When you keep DNA under repair, you need proper omega-6. Our brains take 20% of our metabolic energy. If our mitochondria have bad fats in them, it can’t produce the energy that the nucleus requires to stay healthy. We are being damaged by radiation, so it requires a lot of energy to keep it repaired. If we can’t keep it repaired, we will run into mutations and possibly cancers. [16:20] What’s the Issue with Fish Oil? Fish oil became popular when researchers found out Inuit people had low rates of heart disease. They assumed their pristine health was because of eating so much fish. However, the Inuit people didn’t eat that much fish. Their diets consisted mostly of seal, whale, and blubber. Most fish oil studies are not very well done scientifically. Fish oils are way too unstable for humans to be consuming. It is taxing our ability to keep the oil from oxidizing. A majority of the fish oil on the shelves are already oxidized – there is no way that can be healthy for you. It turns out that you only need 4.3 milligrams of DHA a day for a healthy brain. Matheson is amazed at how many punches the human body can take and still function. [22:10] How to Get DHA Without Fish Oil Most people get enough DHA. DHA can hang around the brain for about 18 months. There isn’t a significant turnover, and we do not need tons of it. You have to have the right fats to make DHA in the first place. [23:00] Where Does the Fish Oil End Up? The fish oil will get broken down. The body will recognize it as a toxin. Most of the fish oil is artificial, and the body cannot even recognize its chemical makeup. You can decrease the efficiency of mitochondria by introducing DHA. [28:30] The Most Pristine Fish Oil in the World Your body can get rid of the fish oil pretty fast. If you are on fish oil for a month, do you feel any better on it? If you feel good on the fish oil, then something positive is happening. Fish oil can have a cortisol effect at first. However, it is not a long-term or healthy effect. [36:40] Damaging Fats Plant oils that are processed and rancid olive oils. When you oxidize an oil, it starts to smell bad. So, the manufactures deodorize the oil. Now, the oil cannot take oxygen. Putting that oil in your cell membrane will result in the Warburg Effect. If you decrease the oxygen in your cells, then they will turn cancerous. 60% of us will get cancer in our lifetime. In the 1900s, it was 3%. [43:30] About Pure Form Omegas Pure Form is all organized and cold-pressed under a blanket of nitrogen. The oil has not touched oxygen, and every capsule has a bubble in it. We used to eat things straight from the ground. Now, we don’t have a choice anymore. People will feel the difference, and they will feel it quickly. AND MUCH MORE! Danny Vega | Mistakes Made With The Ketogenic Diet, Keto For Kids, SuperStarch: KKP 72
Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Danny Vega, part of the Fat Fueled Family - a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to leading a movement that will empower families to eat better, move more, and grow closer. They invite you into their lives and hope you enjoy their content. In June of 2016, Danny discovered the ketogenic lifestyle, and he never looked back. Danny found so many benefits within a week of switching that he knew this would be the new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating himself up with heavy lifting were gone. Danny regained control over his hunger and found mental clarity and an increase in productivity that he had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, his two boys joined him. Desmond, the eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, the youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Danny's children are immune to cravings. It has been a fantastic thing to see. They thought their kids were "picky" just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds, and now they crave real, nourishing food. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way! In this episode, Danny breaks some common myths about the ketogenic diet – during the first three weeks of the diet, you shouldn't be lowering your protein intake. Danny also touches on the importance of salt, potassium, electrolytes, and magnesium. Then, Danny explains why he would carb load during high-performance athletic workouts. Stay tuned to hear the ways Danny's kids utilize the ketogenic diet and how they navigate the kid's menu at restaurants. Plus, Danny reveals the science behind SuperStarch®. Join the Keto Kamp Academy Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 [06:45] About Danny Vega Danny was getting recruited to big-name schools for his football skills, even Columbia University. In 2013, Danny got into power lifting – making it into the top 25 in the country. When he deadlifted 700 lbs., he tore his left meniscus. In 2016, Danny’s knee was hurting like crazy, so he decided just to get healthy. He tried a typical bodybuilding diet; they did well. Eventually, he and his wife started on the ketogenic diet. [18:25] Mistakes Made with the Ketogenic Diet There is an obsession with moderating protein. Keto is getting to a point where there is enough information out there that most people think they know what it is. People think if they overeat protein, it will turn into sugar. Danny says you can’t lower protein too much in the first three weeks. Make sure your protein is high in the first three weeks. Aim for five to eight grams of salt per day. Five grams of salt is not five grams of sodium. A teaspoon of salt will give you two grams of sodium. Get to a higher point with your metabolism so you have more to work with. Danny gets women to eat more each day because they do not eat enough. Being undernourished will impede fat loss. It’s not just cramps we should be worrying about. Potassium will help minimize overnight muscle spasms, which may contribute to you waking up in the middle of the night. Keep your electrolytes high and take a magnesium supplement. [28:10] Should You Do a Weekly Scheduled Carb Load? Fifty grams of carbs post-workout was all Danny could give to himself. However, he knew the keto diet wasn’t taking into account high-performance athletes. A fat-adapted athlete is going to be able to eat a lot more carbs. Although, that doesn’t mean they should eat more carbs. Fat can create the sugar that we need. If you are chronically doing high-performance training, your body will be stressed without the carbs. It’s important to have carbs during days like that. Glucose intolerance can act up over time while practicing the ketogenic diet. Use carb loads when you need them; weekly might not necessarily make sense. “Everything should be done strategically.” [34:30] Never Feed Your Kids From The Kid’s Menu This is one of Danny’s biggest pet peeves. We are doing our children such a disservice. If you are trying to conceive, take methylated b vitamins. Breastfeed your children for gut health and immune health. Nurse your babies until they start showing interest in food. Then, cut the babies food into strips. When you go to restaurants, you will see the kid’s menu with mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, and hotdogs. If both parents are together, get both parties on the same page. Talk to your partner about what is okay for your kids to eat. Get rid of all the crap in the house – have a list of non-negotiables. When you go out, have a plan. In the car, Danny pulls up the menu and scopes out the options. “Don’t fight your kids on nutrition.” [47:50] About SuperStarch SuperStarch® is a patented energy source without sugar or stimulants that delivers a slow-release of carbohydrates to steady your blood sugar.
