204: 5 year anniversary episode: Kirk’s Story: Early PSA Testing, Surgery at 59, and Getting Back to Life (Fast!)

204: 5 year anniversary episode: Kirk’s Story: Early PSA Testing, Surgery at 59, and Getting Back to Life (Fast!)

In this Episode which marks the 5th anniversary of the Penis Project Podcast, Kate and Melissa, practitioners from Restorative Health Clinic talk to Kirk (59), who shares his very recent journey with prostate cancer — from vigilant PSA screening due to a strong family history, through biopsy and robotic prostatectomy(Gleason 9), to an unusually swift return of continence and erections (yes, really… at 5 weeks!). We chat about why a good GP relationship matters, common myths (no, PSA screening is not a finger-up-the-bum), and practical rehab steps that set you up for the best outcome. We also touch on the challenges recent Medicare telehealth changes pose for rural men and why community conversations save lives.

Key Takeaways:

  • PSA screening saves lives: It’s a blood test. Many men still believe screening means a rectal exam — that misconception stops blokes from testing.
  • Early and regular checks matter, especially with family history. Kirk and his GP were “on it,” which likely changed his trajectory.
  • Rehab starts before surgery: Pre-op pelvic floor coaching and early, structured penile rehab support faster continence and sexual recovery.
  • Expectations matter: Being clear about how important sex is to you helps the team tailor a plan (medications, devices, or injections) so intimacy continues post-treatment.
  • Modern prostate cancer care is not what it was 20 years ago — minimally invasive surgery, targeted radiation, and better side-effect profiles.

Episode Highlights

  • Family history matters: Kirk, a 59-year-old anaesthetist, always knew prostate cancer was a “when, not if.” Vigilant PSA screening caught it early.
  • PSA test = blood test: Many men still mistakenly think screening means a rectal exam — this myth stops blokes from testing.
  • Gleason upgrade: Biopsy showed 7, but post-surgery pathology was 9 — reinforcing why early surgery was lifesaving.
  • GPs are gold: A trusted GP relationship ensures timely checks and continuity of care.
  • Rehab starts before surgery: Pelvic floor exercises and penile rehab education gave Kirk the best start.
  • Fast recovery: At 5 weeks post-op, Kirk is dry, pad-free, and already regaining erectile function with support strategies.
  • Community conversations: Kirk shared his diagnosis with ice-hockey teammates — most had no idea PSA was just a blood test.
  • Rural barriers: Medicare telehealth changes risk limiting access for country men as of November 1st 2025 — highlighting the importance of policy that supports remote care.
  • Positive outlook: Kirk’s story proves recovery can be quicker than many expect, and modern treatments offer far better outcomes than in the past.
  • Take-home message: Don’t wait for symptoms — get your PSA blood test done and talk to your mates about it.

Shareable quotes

  • “Good news — PSA screening is a blood test. That’s it.”
  • “Pre-hab matters: start pelvic floor and penile rehab before surgery.”
  • “Sex after prostate cancer is absolutely possible — the toolkit is bigger and better than ever.”
  • “Men will talk footy all day — let’s talk our health the same way.”

142. Measure your nocturnal erections at home!!!! Yes, you heard right - tech has come this far…

142. Measure your nocturnal erections at home!!!! Yes, you heard right - tech has come this far…

So, any regular listener of The Penis Project will know I am always ‘banging’ on about how important nocturnal erections are to penile health. Until now, trying to ascertain whether a man is having this all-important exercise was a guessing game but there is an invention that enables you to objectively test this at home. The bonus is it doubles as a cock ring!   This ring is quite amazing , not only does it connect to your phone and give you information about nocturnal erections it can also be worn during sex for extra titillation for your partner and it is made of a very special product that means it still lets the atrial blood flow in whilst wearing it, this means no more blue tinge to the shaft and it is safe to wear all night (most cock rings can only be left on for 30 min).   As a bonus, it provides light pressure to the urethra which apparently improves orgasm sensation…   Elliott, the inventor, doesn’t know if it will prevent arousal leakage and climacturia so if you have this problem, please email us as we would like to do some research into this subject.   The other amazing thing about this clever little device is if you think a medication you are taking is affecting your erectile function you can now test it by measuring rigidity pre and post the medication over time.    Needless to say, I am very excited about this product and will definitely be getting Roger the Resident Penis to try this out! We will keep you posted.    Check out links below for more info. This will soon be available in our clinic and online store.    https://myfirmtech.com/pages/our-story  ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/     Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

141. Mike the Determinator and Samantha the Bewitcher

141. Mike the Determinator and Samantha the Bewitcher

Meet Mike and Samantha, they contacted The Penis Project as they were keen to share their story, which is one of love, connection and romance.  Samantha and Mike had been married for 45 years. And through it all, have enjoyed a very healthy and active sex life. This halted when they both got diagnosed with cancer - endometrial for Samantha and prostate for Mike.    Mike was very open with his doctor about the importance of his sexual function after treatment. His doctor understood his predicament and offered nerve-sparing surgery.   Like most men, Mike had problems with incontinence after surgery which affected his sexual function amongst other things, and this caused him to feel depressed. Thankfully, with help from his healthcare team, Samantha and himself, he was able to overcome it.   Now, less than a year post-op, Mike advocates the use of pumps, injections, and exploring things to make your sex life better. Samantha also shares the importance of finding all the information available to aid recovery. Be your own advocate is her motto.  The same with all the others who we had in the podcast - Mike and Samantha encourage anyone to have yourself checked. Just get checked.   And lastly, Mike and Samantha's advice to others is this: 'To just refuse to grow up'. When they go out on dates, they always sit on same side of the dinner booth.... they're always holding hands when out... always have an arm around each other at the theater...etc., and people ask from time to time why they're so happy together after 46 years of being together.... and her comment to those folks are that "we have refused to grow up"! And they make it a point after love making sessions to look at each other and ask cheerfully "what's wrong with us at 65 & 70 yrs old"? And their answer is always the same to others as well as themselves...."we just refuse to grow up"!!    Thank you, Samantha and Mike, for sharing your story with us!   ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

140. Valentines Day in June - Meet Harry and Meghan

140. Valentines Day in June - Meet Harry and Meghan

We’re celebrating Valentines Day this June with our guests Harry and Meghan, a couple with a 37-year marriage and counting.   Harry, who had previously battled testicular cancer 20 years ago, now faced a new obstacle at the age of 59. His diagnoses of both prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were revealed on the same day. Despite the daunting circumstances, Harry and Meghan supported each other unwaveringly.   Harry's recovery process included wearing pads for just a month. And being an eager beaver, he started injections 1-month post-op.  Though injections affect spontaneity, it is still good according to Meghan. Regarding incontinence, Harry is with the majority that beer is the culprit.   One of the key takeaways that Meghan wants to share is to make sure to have yourself checked when something seems amiss and that it’s totally okay to seek a health team you feel most comfortable with.    Their story serves as a powerful lesson in maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversity. Throughout it all, their bond grew stronger, exemplifying the significance of a supportive partnership. In conclusion, Harry and Meghan's journey emphasizes the importance of staying positive, resilient, and united when confronting life's challenges.   If you want to hear the secrets to their funny and lovely journey, click the button below.   ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

139. Neglected Sexual Side-effects of PC- A researcher’s findings; Meet Pierre

139. Neglected Sexual Side-effects of PC- A researcher’s findings; Meet Pierre

Today, we talk with Pierre.   In 2017, Pierre attended a conference in South Africa where he had the opportunity to meet Dr. Jo. The talk delivered by Dr. Jo left a lasting impression on Pierre, inspiring him to focus his efforts on studying physiology and men's health. This decision was deeply personal for Pierre, as his father had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Motivated by this experience, Pierre sought to make a difference by helping men with their sexual function. To achieve this, he enlisted the assistance of Helen, who guided him in developing the necessary skill set.  Pierre's dedication led him to pursue a PhD, and he reached out to Dr. Jo for guidance and support in his research. The central focus of his PhD work was the neglected sexual side effects, an issue often associated with shame. Pierre hypothesized that many individuals silently suffer from sexual dysfunction due to societal taboos and stigmas. To shed light on this topic, he aimed to investigate the impact of sexual dysfunction, exploring various aspects such as orgasm-associated problems, climacturia, delayed orgasm, penile shortening, and loss of ejaculation.  Pierre emphasized the significance of asking the right questions to obtain the necessary answers. He believed that by providing men with a means to assess themselves, they could gain valuable insights into their own sexual health. Pierre’s ongoing PhD research aims to contribute to improving men's health outcomes. Part of his study also acknowledges the profound psychosocial impact that sexual dysfunction can have on men, emphasizing the challenges they often face in dealing with this issue.   In the middle of it all, Melissa shares a very helpful tip that can help men going through any kind of sexual dysfunction - measure your penis before surgery/treatment. ;)   To have a listen, click the button below.  ----- Resources:  Recover after prostate cancer https://physioskills.thinkific.com/courses/recover-after-prostate-cancer Principles of male pelvic health physiotherapy https://physioskills.thinkific.com/courses/principles-of-male-pelvic-health-physiotherapy-online-course ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

138. Meet Brian and Vanessa - Recovery, Injections, Lymphedema, and 2-3 Rounds

138. Meet Brian and Vanessa - Recovery, Injections, Lymphedema, and 2-3 Rounds

Brian had his prostate surgery in September 2021 and his recovery went pretty smoothly. He only needed to wear pads for a couple of weeks. Surprisingly, he decided to try his first injection less than four weeks after the surgery. The sight of the tools was frightful, but hey, the results were pretty, pretty, good! The only downside was feeling a bit uncomfortable while driving on the freeway.  Come March, Brian met Vanessa and faced the challenge of navigating a new relationship after prostate surgery. However, they had the necessary conversation about Brian's circumstance, and their relationship flourished.   Brian didn’t have a super smooth journey though since in the middle of his newfound romance was the occurrence of lymphedema. However, with a great mindset and a trusting partner, he was able to overcome it - by using bandages.   Brian emphasises the importance of having that difficult first conversation about prostate cancer with a partner. He believes that without having that conversation, nothing will progress, and encourages others to openly discuss their experiences.  This is an inspiring story about finding love despite being a bit floppy!  ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

137. Rise of the Phoenix - Meet Phoenix

Today, we speak with Phoenix, a 54-year-old man, who underwent surgery for prostate cancer in July 2022.   Over a period of three years, Phoenix monitored his PSA levels, until one test showed an elevated result and him experiencing difficulty passing urine. Subsequent tests were conducted, including an MRI and biopsy to confirm diagnosis.  Continence was an issue for Phoenix after surgery. He also encountered another setback in the form of an anal fissure, which made it difficult for him to walk and required surgery to fix.  Regarding his current continence status, Phoenix underwent shockwave therapy to address any lingering issues.   One nice surprise though that he mentioned is that his orgasms have become more intense than before. (SN: We would love your vote on this in the button below. ;))   Despite the challenges he has faced, Phoenix remains committed to following health advice, going with the flow, and avoiding competitiveness - in terms of doing rips in the gym and in how one recovers from surgery. He acknowledges that the journey has been challenging at times but is determined to do everything possible to maintain his progress. Encouragingly, he has stopped wearing pads for the last four weeks, marking a significant milestone in his recovery.  In conclusion, Phoenix's experience with prostate cancer and subsequent surgery has had its ups and downs. However, he has emerged from it with positive results and an optimistic outlook. By trusting in health advice, adapting to changes, and focusing on his well-being, Phoenix has made significant strides in his recovery.   ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

136. Doing What Dad Said - Meet Rod

"I hoped I gave you guys the gift of life. Cause unfortunately it’s not gonna work my way. So, it’s up to you guys to get checked regularly and stay in tune".    This was Rod’s message from his dad which he religiously heeded after his father’s passing.   It’s also a lesson he keeps sharing with every guy he meets. Go get checked.   He’s been doing this for more than 15 years. And now, he’s here to share it to a worldwide audience. ;)   Meet Rod.   Rod was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last January 2022, but he wasn’t surprised since he knew it runs in the family.   What’s unusual for Rod though is that he stayed longer in the hospital compared to other patients.   His continence was good, making him quite confident until, one day when he had too much alcohol and had the realisation that “Jacks” is better than beer if you want to keep the nappies away.   Rod will take you through his journey - from his dad’s story to his own. He’ll also share why he’s using a pump for muscle exercise and that needles are a good thing. Also, he’ll talk about the changes in orgasm and how it is now.   Rod also shares what he wishes he knew before starting his journey.   Lastly, he's curious if his kids will listen to this podcast. We know you’ll do, though!   Enjoy listening! Do you think Rod’s kids will listen to this? Share it in the comments. ;)   If you wish to talk to Rod, please let us know so we can share his contact details with you.  ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

135.Losing Weight After Prostate Cancer Diagnosis; Star Trek Paul

If you’re looking to lose weight and have been finding it difficult, this might just be the podcast for you. In just two months, our guest for today lost 9 kgs. ;)     Meet Paul. We also have our guest host, Kendall.   Paul was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last April 2022.   After bum checks, MRI, and a biopsy - his results were in and you guessed it he had prostate cancer.  Paul is not aware of any family history relating to prostate cancer so this was a shock to him. But it also became a wake-up call and a step towards his weight loss journey and better health in general.   Together with Kendall, he was able to lose 9 kilograms 2 months and lost 6 centimeters (about 2.36 in) around his waist.  Much like many others, Paul also learned how bad alcohol is when it comes to continence. So instead of having beer every day, he drinks it only on ‘cheat days’. He has also realised the affect alcohol consumption has on his weight loss.   He has been sleeping better, doing tons of walks, and eating healthy to aid weight loss.   Prior to diagnosis, Paul was taking testosterone injections which had to be discontinued before the surgery. After a good prognosis and getting to his doctor, he started using a daily gel - which was easier than the testosterone injections.   Paul acknowledges that he has been well looked after by his medical team and that this podcast was like a ‘school he was going to’ with Melissa and Dr Jo as his classmates.   Do you also feel the same as Paul, that this podcast is like a school you go to? Of course, with Dr Jo and Melissa being your chatty & giggly schoolmates. 😉    Enjoy listening!  ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi
