How Trauma Affects The Gut

How Trauma Affects The Gut

We all deal with trauma at some point in life, but the good news is we can address it and come out stronger using the right tools. Since trauma is kept in both the mind and body, it makes sense that modalities that tap into the mind-body connection are successful to produce long-lasting healing. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman is joined by world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma, Jim Gordon, to discuss how trauma affects the gut and why nutrition is part of his trauma-healing protocol to help the entire body heal.  Dr. Jim Gordon is the author of The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing After Trauma and is a Harvard educated psychiatrist and a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. He has worked with traumatized children and families in Bosnia, Gaza, Haiti, post-9/11 New York, and Parkland, among many other areas across the world facing tragedy and trauma. Dr. Gordon also works with veterans and active-duty military to address PTSD. Tune into Dr. Hyman’s full-length conversation with Dr. Jim Gordon: https://DrMarkHyman.lnk.to/DrJimGordon

The Brain Science Behind Social Conflict And Depression with Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter

The Brain Science Behind Social Conflict And Depression with Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter

We’re living in a more divisive time than ever before. I’m not just talking about politics—we’re at aggressive odds over everything from diet (vegan versus Paleo) to sports and we’re even seeing an escalation in road rage. There’s actually a reason this is happening. We’re disconnected. Social media is actually isolating us; we ignore the importance of sleep and nature; stress is at epidemic proportions. These lifestyle disconnects cause structural and functional disconnects in the brain that lead to more divisive and angry behavior. Our ability to make good decisions pretty much goes out the window. But it’s not too late to reverse these negative effects. I was so excited to sit down with my good friends Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter on The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about these modern challenges and how we can detox the brain to restore better decision making and overall health.  Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist. His books have been published in 34 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Dr. Perlmutter’s new book Brain Wash, co-written with his son Austin Perlmutter, MD, was just released on January 14, 2020. Dr. Austin Perlmutter is a board-certified internal medicine physician. His academic focus is on understanding the decision-making process, how it is influenced by internal and external factors, and how it changes our health and illness outcomes.  This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Brodo. I’m always being asked how to source high-quality meat and seafood, so I want to share one of my favorite resources with you that I use to get quality protein in my own diet, ButcherBox. ButcherBox is currently offering listeners 2lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon PLUS $20 off your first box. Just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy to take advantage of this great deal. Bone broth has been getting a lot of hype in recent years, and for a good reason, it’s a super-healing food, rich in collagen protein, and it has powerful gut repairing compounds. It truly is food as medicine. You can now get Brodo bone broth delivered right to your door. Brodo is offering my listeners 15% off your first order with the promo code DRHYMAN. Just go to brodo.com and use the code at checkout. And if you subscribe to get bi-weekly or monthly resends you’ll save another 10-15%.  Here are more of the details from our interview: -How the prefrontal cortex acts as the adult in your brain (11:56) -The way in which chronic stress rewires your brain and affects empathy and decision making (14:28) -Regaining control of the ways in which our brains are being manipulated by media (18:15) -How making bad food decisions affects the brain, drives inflammation, creates depression, and leads to more unhealthy decision making (27:39) -How excessive social media use affects the brain (34:44) -The fundamentally important and underrated role of sleep on the brain (42:57) -Removing blame from our inability to make healthy decisions (48:27) -Why healthcare providers need to reframe their perspective and approach to working patients who do not follow through with lifestyle changes (52:27) -How Inflammatory food perpetuates impulsivity, aggression, and violence (1:01:29) -Learn more about the book Brain Wash at brainwashbook.com -Find Dr. David Perlmutter online at https://www.drperlmutter.com/ and follow him on Facebook @DavidPerlmutterMD, on Instagram @davidperlmutter, and on Twitter @DavidPerlmutter -Follow Dr. Austin Perlmutter on Instagram @austinperlmutter and on Twitter @austinperlmd

Why Neuroscientists Love Running

Why Neuroscientists Love Running

For decades we were taught there was no stopping cognitive and physical decline, now we know it’s possible to maintain a youthful brain and body into old age using accessible means. Given the right conditions, you can continue to thrive well into old age. In fact, the personality trait of “openness to experience” was a major predictor of good physical activity at age 75, because of a willingness to participate in athletics and try new things. That means, no matter what age you are now, keeping an open and adventurous mind and trying new types of movement in your own routine can help you stay active and healthy as you get older. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with brain health experts Dr. Marwan Sabbagh and Dr. Daniel Amen, and age management medicine expert Dr. George Shapiro about the tools available to each of us to promote optimal health at any age. Dr. Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist and considered one of the leading experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and BMC Neurology and is now editor in chief of Neurology and Therapy and is the author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy, and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook: 100 Recipes to Boost Brain Health. Dr. Sabbagh’s latest book, Fighting for My Life: How to Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, was released last year. The Washington Post called Dr. Daniel Amen the most popular psychiatrist in America and Discover Magazine listed his brain imaging research as the top neuroscience story for 2015. He is a double board-certified psychiatrist and ten-time New York Times bestselling author, with such blockbuster books as Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Healing ADD, Memory Rescue, Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades, and The Daniel Plan, co-authored by Pastor Rick Warren and Dr. Mark Hyman. In March 2020, his book The End of Mental Illness will be published. Dr. George Shapiro has been a practicing physician for 30 years, specializing in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and age management medicine. Dr. Shapiro was the recipient of the 10th Annual Alan P. Mintz, MD Award, for Clinical Excellence in Age Management Medicine, as he has become known nationwide as an expert in age management medicine, and leads one of the most prominent age management practices in the country as president of Cenegenics New York City. He has long been known as one of New York’s foremost cardiologists, specializing in regenerative medicine and improving longevity, including the genomics of cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure.  Tune into Dr. Hyman’s full-length conversation with Dr. Marwan Sabbagh: https://DrMarkHyman.lnk.to/DrMarwanSabbagh Tune into Dr. Hyman’s full-length conversation with Dr. Daniel Amen:   https://DrMarkHyman.lnk.to/DrDanielAmen Tune into Dr. Hyman’s full-length conversation with Dr. George Shapiro: https://DrMarkHyman.lnk.to/DrGeorgeShapiro

Is It Possible To Be Vegan-Keto? with Dr. Ethan Weiss and Dr. Carrie Diulus

Is It Possible To Be Vegan-Keto? with Dr. Ethan Weiss and Dr. Carrie Diulus

Despite what conventional medicine has told us, type 1 diabetes is not a sentence for a heavy reliance on insulin. For many people, a diet that carefully monitors carb intake can dramatically reduce blood sugar swings and reduce the amount of insulin needed.  Keto (or the ketogenic diet) has gotten a lot of buzz lately, and this fat-heavy very low-carb approach to eating is showing some promise for diabetics and many other metabolic diseases as well. With that being said, there is no perfect diet for everyone, and each person needs to find what works best for them. One of my guests on this week’s Doctor’s Farmacy podcast, Dr. Carrie Diulus, has found vegan keto is the best approach for managing her type 1 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight. We’re also joined by Dr. Ethan Weiss, who’s been steadily in ketosis for about 2 years using a plant-heavy, mostly pescatarian keto approach. This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and SomniFix.  Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule. Not only does Thrive offer 25 to 50% off all of my favorite brands, but they also give back. For every membership purchased, they give a membership to a family in need, and they make it easy to find the right membership for you and your family. You can choose from 1-month, 3-month, or 12-month plans. And right now, Thrive is offering all Doctor's Farmacy listeners a great deal, you’ll get up to $20 in shopping credit when you sign up, to spend on all your own favorite natural food, body, and household items. And any time you spend more than $49 you’ll get free carbon-neutral shipping. All you have to do is head over to thrivemarket.com/Hyman. Most of us aren’t getting our best rest. But there is actually a proven solution I’ve found for getting high-quality rest, simply by helping you breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. They’re called SomniFix Strips. Breathing through your nose has so many benefits—it protects against mouth dryness and nasal congestion, boosts oxygen saturation for enhanced focus, and helps naturally produce nitric oxide that kills bacteria and supports immunity. SomniFix is now offering all Doctor’s Farmacy listeners 20% off of your order. Just go to somnifix.com, and use the code HYMAN20 at checkout. Here are more of the details from our interview: -How Dr. Diulu became vegan keto (9:13) -The evolution in thinking about heart disease and heart-healthy diets (22:26) -The idea of “the best diet” (26:36) -Saturated vs unsaturated fats and the ketogenic diet (32:38) -Why fiber is a significant factor and calories still matter with the ketogenic diet (43:58) -Do you need to go in and out of ketosis and can you achieve longevity through diet? (50:55) -Sarcopenia of aging and eating for mobility as you age (1:00:53) -The benefits of testing blood insulin levels (1:12:37) -What you need to know if you want to try keto (1:20:15) -What a typical day of eating looks like for Dr. Diulu and Dr. Weiss (1:31:03) -Learn more about Keyto, which aims to make the ketogenic diet more accessible through a breath meter device and phone app at www.getketyo.com

Why Eating Fake Meat Won't Solve Our Climate Problem

Why Eating Fake Meat Won't Solve Our Climate Problem

Wendell Berry said, "To be interested in food but not in food production is clearly absurd." We need to revolutionize the food system completely. We have as system that fuels destruction, not only of our own health, but the health of the planet and animals. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My new book, Food Fix, both defines the problems and maps out the policies, business innovations and grass roots solutions. And what we can each do to improve our health and the health of our communities and the planet. ⁣⁣ I cannot cure obesity and diabetes in my office. It is cured on the farm, in the grocery store, in the restaurant, in our kitchens, schools, workplaces, and faith based communities. ⁣⁣This book will show you how. How To Feed Your Gut

How To Feed Your Gut

There are so many angles we need to look at with gut health and they can tell us an amazing amount of information about the rest of the body. Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman explores the role of the gut microbiome and how best to feed it with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. George Papanicolaou, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s goal is to help patients achieve vitality through focusing on optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in August 2017.  Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their wellness goals. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well, a topic she is passionate about as a breast cancer survivor. Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare.  Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv. I recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. It actually helps your cells produce collagen so it improves skin tone and complexion, diminishes signs of aging like wrinkles, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars. To check out the Joovv products for yourself head over to joovv.com/farmacy. Once you’re there, you’ll see a special bonus the Joovv team is giving away to my listeners. Use the code FARMACY at checkout.  Here are more of the details from our interview:  -Racial health disparity statistics and factors driving these disparities (4:37) -The Tuskegee syphilis experiment how it continues to perpetuate distrust of the healthcare system (12:50) -The cascading effects of racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and unconscious bias on minority health (15:47) -Targeted food marketing to minority populations and acknowledging the reality of food injustice (19:53) -The role of sugar and the sugar industry in driving health disparities (30:32) -How community-based conversations and initiatives can improve health literacy and outcomes (35:40) -The importance of prioritizing cultural sensitivity in creating health programs (42:43) -Economic implications of the healthcare disparities crisis and incentivizing value-based healthcare (55.47) -Multicultural specialty centers (1:01:06) -Calling for hospitals and healthcare practitioners to give voice to our national food crisis (1:06:28)
