Want to Age Well? Start With Your Breath | Ep. 51

Want to Age Well? Start With Your Breath | Ep. 51

You wake up with a dry mouth. You're up once or twice in the night. Maybe someone has mentioned that you snore. It's easy to chalk all of that up to getting older. But it might come down to something much simpler: whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth.

Most of us treat the nose like a passageway. In this episode of Yoga for Longevity, Mikah Horn makes the case that it's doing far more work than you realize, and that this one simple habit shapes your sleep, your circulation, and how you feel in your body as you age. She looks at what the science actually shows about nasal breathing, from filtering to nitric oxide to better sleep, separates what's solid from what tends to get oversold, and shares what she's been exploring in her own life.

Then she turns to what yoga has understood about the breath for thousands of years. From prana and the body's energy channels, to the real research on right versus left nostril breathing, to the nasal cycle that yogis noticed centuries before science named it, this is where tradition and evidence meet, and where Mikah lets each one stand on its own.

If your sleep, your energy, or your stress could use some support, and you want somewhere simple to start, this episode is for you.

In this episode, you'll learn:

- Why nose breathing does things your mouth simply cannot, and what nitric oxide has to do with it

- How mouth breathing may be affecting your sleep, your snoring, and even your nighttime trips to the bathroom

- One simple breathing shift you can practice during the day and support at night

- What yoga understood about the breath long before science could measure it

- What the research on right and left nostril breathing actually found, and where it's still a fascinating lens rather than settled science
