Glasses Got Smart, Eyes Got Worse

Glasses Got Smart, Eyes Got Worse

Glasses are becoming the next computer — and Japan sits at the center.

▼ About This Episode

On a rooftop farm — where city kids touch soil for the first time — Sakura shows up in a pair of glasses with no lenses, and Haru notices. That small detail opens a much bigger story. In Japan, eyewear has quietly become three things at once: a fashion signal you wear like makeup, a world-beating export cheaper than almost anywhere, and — out of the 121-year-old craft town of Sabae and the labs of Meta and Google — the next computing platform that sits on your face.

But behind the smart glasses, the eyes themselves are failing. Nearly four in ten elementary kids in Japan can't see clearly, and short-sightedness could cost the country fifteen trillion yen a year by 2050. The cheapest cure isn't in a lab — it's outside, in the very sky those children are looking up at.

As we race to put a computer on every face, will the eyes behind it ever get to look up?
