Fall Asleep to The Mystery of the Moai of Rapa Nui

Almost nine hundred enormous stone figures stand on a small triangle of grass in the middle of the emptiest ocean on Earth. They were carved from a single hill with hand picks of basalt, on an island with no metal, no wheels and no draft animals, by a few thousand people who had found the loneliest habitable place in the world and made it their own. And then, somehow, the figures left the hill. Some travelled eleven miles. The largest that was ever raised weighs about eighty tons. Nobody wrote down how it was done, and the people who could have told us in a single sentence were taken away in ships in 1862. Tonight we go there slowly, and we take all the time it needs.

This is a long, quiet walk through what is known and what is not. The ocean and the extraordinary navigators who crossed it. The soft grey stone of Rano Raraku, and the four hundred figures still standing on its slope with the carvers' tools lying in the grass where they were set down. The roads that radiate out from the quarry, and the ninety statues lying along them that never arrived. The theories, held lightly and in turn — sledges, rollers, timber, ropes — and the oral tradition that answered the question plainly for two and a half centuries while everyone politely wrote it down as folklore. The white coral eyes, which nobody knew were there until 1978, and which went in last, at the very end, when the figure was finally standing in its place and looking at his family for the first time.

Nothing here is framed as frightening, and nothing is claimed as certain that isn't. There's no music and no ambient sound — just a calm voice, slow images on a black screen, and a picture held gently to a brightness that cannot wake you. It runs one hour and nineteen minutes, and it doesn't need you to reach the end. The wind-down begins long before the last words and lets you go before then. The statues face inland, with their backs to the sea, watching over the people rather than the horizon. That was always the job. They're still doing it tonight, whether anyone is awake to notice or not. Sleep well.
