How Do You Know If You Have a Sex Addiction?

How Do You Know If You Have a Sex Addiction?

"Most people know they have a problem long before they're willing to admit it. They know it when they hide. They know it when they lie. They know it when they promise themselves and others that they'll stop."

Everybody wants healing. Everybody wants freedom. Everybody wants the pain to stop. So why do so many people stay stuck for years — sometimes decades — repeating the same pattern, making the same promise, waiting for the next burst of motivation to finally be the one that works?

In this episode, Dr. Michael Barta answers a question that sounds simple and isn't: what does healing actually require? The common assumption is that recovery begins when someone finally learns enough, or wants it badly enough, or finds the right amount of willpower. Dr. Barta replaces that with something harder and more useful. Recovery begins with honesty — and not honesty with a spouse, a therapist or a support group. Honesty with oneself, first.

In this episode, you will discover:

  • The Wanting Gap: Why wanting healing and doing what healing requires are two entirely different things, and why the gap between them can last decades.
  • Knowing vs. Admitting: Why most people are not unaware of their problem, and why awareness was never the missing piece.
  • Denial as Protection: Why denial is rarely deliberate dishonesty. It is a defence against what admitting the truth would cost.
  • The Arithmetic of Addiction: Why the behaviour always takes more than it gives, and why it grows rather than shrinks when it goes untreated.
  • Having a Problem vs. Being the Problem: The distinction that separates accountability from shame, and why confusing the two makes recovery harder.
  • The Order of Honesty: Why honesty with oneself has to come before honesty with anyone else, and what happens when the order is reversed.
  • The Real Starting Line: Why healing does not begin when the behaviour stops. It begins when the denial stops.

This episode is for anyone who has made the promise and broken it, who has found a dozen explanations for a pattern they already understand, or who has quietly wondered whether the problem is as serious as it feels. It is also for the clinicians and partners trying to understand why insight alone has not been enough.

Gentle Next Step: What is the one thing you have been telling yourself isn't that bad? Not to fix today — only to stop arguing with.

This is the second episode in a three-part arc. The previous episode examined what trauma really is and why most people fail to recognise it. The next explores the difference between sobriety and recovery, and why stopping a behaviour is only the beginning.
