The Clancy Jury Deadlock Turned Into What New Problem?

After more than thirty-five hours of deliberations, Lindsay Clancy’s jury faced something more complicated than disagreement.

Her attorney says the foreperson told Judge William Sullivan that one juror was not applying the court’s reasonable-doubt instruction. The defense asked Sullivan to remove that juror. He declined.

That decision puts the jury system itself under the microscope.

A juror cannot be removed simply because eleven people dislike the twelfth person’s conclusion. That would destroy the entire purpose of unanimity. But what if the dispute is genuinely about refusing to follow the law?
