What If the Universe Is Inside a Black Hole?

In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope released the first horizon-scale image of M87*, revealing a bright ring of radio emission around a dark central shadow. The result gave scientists powerful new evidence that black holes exist as general relativity predicts. But every photon used to reconstruct that image came from outside the boundary that defines a black hole. The interior remained inaccessible.


That observational limit leads to an unusual cosmological proposal: perhaps the hot, expanding beginning of our universe was the interior continuation of gravitational collapse inside a black hole in a larger parent universe. The idea has appeared in several distinct forms. Raj Kumar Pathria compared a closed universe with a Schwarzschild black hole in 1972. Joel Smoller and Blake Temple later constructed exact shock-wave cosmologies inside black-hole geometries. Nikodem Popławski proposed that spacetime torsion, sourced by particle spin at extreme density, could halt collapse and produce a bounce.


These models address a genuine boundary in physics. Classical general relativity predicts singular behavior in black holes and when cosmological equations are extended backward, but it does not provide a complete description of those limits. Still, mathematical possibility is not observational confirmation. Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background strongly support standard near-flat Lambda-CDM cosmology, and no observation has detected a parent universe, a parent black hole, or a unique signature of black-hole ancestry.


The question is not whether black holes are real. It is whether the Big Bang was simply the earliest stage of our cosmic history, or a transition hidden behind a horizon no observer can cross.
