Fall Asleep to The Mothman of Point Pleasant Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Mothman of Point Pleasant Mystery

In November 1966, people in a small West Virginia town at the confluence of two dark rivers began seeing something they couldn't explain. Two young couples driving near a row of abandoned World War II munitions bunkers reported a tall grey figure with folded wings and large red eyes that followed their car down a country road. Over the next thirteen months, dozens of ordinary residents — factory workers, a fire chief, teenagers, families — independently described the same thing, standing in the same bottomland forest, watching from the same overgrown concrete domes.

Tonight you walk into Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and into the McClintic Wildlife Management Area — the place the locals call the TNT area. You stand among the bunkers in the fog that gathers off the Ohio River most evenings, and you sit with the evidence as it actually exists: the witness accounts, the wildlife biologist who suggested a disoriented sandhill crane, the ornithologists who pointed to barred owls with red-reflecting eyes, and the fact that no photograph, no feather, no track was ever recovered in over a year of sightings. You hear about the journalist who arrived and built a mythology, and about the aging eyebar-chain bridge that carried a highway across the river until, one December rush hour, it didn't.

The sightings stopped as suddenly as they started. The town rebuilt its bridge and, decades later, erected a statue to the thing it never identified. The Ohio River still moves past the point of land that gives the town its name — slow, wide, carrying fog and barge lights and the quiet of a valley that has absorbed its strangest chapter the way it absorbs everything, under layers of river silt and new growth and evening mist.
