Pet Abuse: The Family Member Who Can't Tell Us What's Happening Day 8

Pet Abuse: The Family Member Who Can't Tell Us What's Happening Day 8

Animal abuse isn't always separate from domestic abuse. Sometimes your pet becomes another way to control you. It can be hard for a person looking in on your situation to understand why you stay for the dog, cat, bird, etc... Our pets can be a source of comfort, companionship, and family for us.

Signs to look out for:

Tail between the legs when the abuser is around.

Loosing control of bladder or pooping.

Seems fearful around that person or flinches.

May become aggressive or fearful.

If you are experiencing domestic violence and you're worried about your animals, please know that there are organizations working to help survivors and their pets.

Behind the Bruises: Recognizing the Reality of Physical Abuse Day 2

What does physical abuse look like? I'll take a short dive into examples of physical abuse. Abuse is about the control and power one has over a person or people. This can be from an intimate partner, family member, co-worker, friend, or even your landlord.

Not all abuse is physical and can also look like:

Psychological

Emotional

Verbal Abuse

Sexual Abuse

Financial Abuse

Spiritual Abuse

Cyber Abuse

Child Abuse

Pet Abuse

Elderly Abuse

Immigration Abuse

Teen Dating Violence

If a someone makes you feel unsafe, nervous, anxious, isolated, controlled, silenced, degraded, this is a sign of abuse and please consider reaching out to someone you trust for help, or contact a domestic violence advocate.

Someone out there needs to know they are not alone and that they can survive. Perhaps you are a parent or friend of someone trapped in an abusive relationship and need to know how to help. My goal is to share awareness, offer empowerment, and educate others about emotional traumas and domestic abuse.
