Fall Asleep to The Bennington Triangle Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Bennington Triangle Mystery

Between 1945 and 1950, five people disappeared in the Green Mountains of southwestern Vermont — in and around a single remote, roadless peak called Glastenbury Mountain. An experienced hunting guide, a college student on an afternoon walk, a veteran on a bus, an eight-year-old boy, and a seasoned hiker. None of the cases were solved. Only one body was ever found, in a place that had already been searched. Tonight, we walk the Long Trail through the autumn forest and into the clouds that wrap Glastenbury's summit, following the evidence through each disappearance and the landscape that connects them.

This episode moves through the mountain itself — its geology, its abandoned logging town reclaimed by forest, the Abenaki traditions that long regarded it as a place to pass through carefully. We meet each of the five missing people individually, grounded in who they were before they became part of a pattern that a writer would not name until 1992. We look at the terrain, the search difficulties, and the frameworks that try to account for what happened, and we sit with the fact that none of them explain everything. The Green Mountains do not give easy answers, and Glastenbury gives fewer than most.

The trail climbs through sugar maple and yellow birch into the dark spruce and balsam fir of the boreal zone, where the clouds settle into the trees and the fog softens every sound. Let the moss and the cold air and the quiet of the summit carry you the rest of the way. The mountain will still be here in the morning.
