Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare. Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv. I recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. It actually helps your cells produce collagen so it improves skin tone and complexion, diminishes signs of aging like wrinkles, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars. Here are more of the details from our interview: -Racial health disparity statistics and factors driving these disparities (4:37) -The Tuskegee syphilis experiment how it continues to perpetuate distrust of the healthcare system (12:50) -The cascading effects of racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and unconscious bias on minority health (15:47) -Targeted food marketing to minority populations and acknowledging the reality of food injustice (19:53) -The role of sugar and the sugar industry in driving health disparities (30:32) -How community-based conversations and initiatives can improve health literacy and outcomes (35:40) -The importance of prioritizing cultural sensitivity in creating health programs (42:43) -Economic implications of the healthcare disparities crisis and incentivizing value-based healthcare (55.47) -Multicultural specialty centers (1:01:06) -Calling for hospitals and healthcare practitioners to give voice to our national food crisis (1:06:28)

How Chronic Stress Impacts Your Health And Drives Adrenal Dysfunction

How Chronic Stress Impacts Your Health And Drives Adrenal Dysfunction

This episode is brought to you by Mitopure, AG1, Zero Acre, and Super Simple Protein.  In small doses, stress can be beneficial. However, experiencing too much stress for too long, creates an intense demand for hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to be released. This can lead to adrenal fatigue, or adrenal dysfunction, which could result in burnout, fatigue, weight gain, and so much more. In today’s episode, I talk with Drs. Elizabeth Boham, Izabella Wentz, and Rangan Chatterjee about the link between chronic stress, cortisol, and adrenal dysfunction and how to choose joy to reduce stress. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Izabella Wentz is an internationally acclaimed thyroid specialist and a licensed pharmacist who has dedicated her career to addressing the root causes of autoimmune thyroid disease after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in 2009. She is the author of three books on Hashimoto’s: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause, Hashimoto’s Food Pharmacology, and Hashimoto’s Protocol. Her latest book is Adrenal Transformation Protocol: A 4-Week Plan to Release Stress Symptoms and Go from Surviving to Thriving. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More, which Apple has announced as one of the most downloaded new podcasts of the past year. How To Improve Energy Production, Reduce Inflammation, And Promote Longevity

How To Improve Energy Production, Reduce Inflammation, And Promote Longevity

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Joovv, Pendulum, and Super Simple Protein.  Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of each cell in the body. Unfortunately, our modern diet and lifestyle compromise our mitochondria, which results in suboptimal function of the brain and other organs, reduced energy levels, and even cancer. Luckily, there are science-based practices like cold water therapy that we can do to improve the mitochondrial function of our cells, reduce inflammation, support the immune system, boost metabolism, and more. In today’s episode, I talk with Drs. Chris Rinsch and Stuart Phillips, Wim Hof, Dr. Susanna Søberg, and Dr. Steven Gundry about how to improve the mitochondrial function of our cells, reduce inflammation, and more. Dr. Chris Rinsch is the cofounder and CEO of Amazentis, an innovative life science company dedicated to employing breakthrough research and clinical science to bring advanced therapeutic nutrition products to life. Dr. Stuart Phillips is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and a member of the School of Medicine at McMaster University. Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold, and he is the author of The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential. Dr. Susanna Søberg has a PhD in metabolism and specializes in functional breathing and cold and heat exposure for health optimization. She is the founder and CEO of the Soeberg Institute, where she teaches people how to “stress up to stress down” using natural stressors. Dr. Steven Gundry is one of the world’s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition as well as a medical director at the International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. How To Reset Your Immune System At A Cellular Level

How To Reset Your Immune System At A Cellular Level

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, AG1, and Super Simple Grassfed Protein. It’s time to think about immunity in a new way. There’s been a lot of focus recently on “boosting” your immune system. However, boosting immunity merely exaggerates all the defects of an aging immune system, whereas rejuvenation reboots immunity from your cells up. Rejuvenation is way more foundational and longer lasting than a basic boost because it uses your built-in programming to rebalance and optimize that system’s function.  In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I dive into immuno-rejuvenation—what it is, how it happens in the body, and my top strategies for switching it on.  This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Super Simple Grassfed Protein. Access more than 3,000 specialty lab tests with Rupa Health. You can check out a free, live demo with a Q&A or create an account at RupaHealth.com today. Head to drinkAG1.com/HYMAN to receive 10 FREE travel packs of AG1 with your first purchase. Right now, you can get 10% off Super Simple Grassfed Protein by heading to drhyman.com/protein and using code protein10. Here are more details from our interview (audio version / Apple Subscriber version): Why rejuvenation is better than the conventional approach to immune health (5:37 / 3:55) How rejuvenation happens in the body (7:06 / 4:22) Activating our body’s own immuno-rejuvenation (11:05 / 8:25) How positive stress is rejuvenating (13:38 / 11:22)  Examples of positive stressors (16:52 / 14:37)  Mentioned in this episode Big Bold Health
