Podcast Episode #31: Mysterious “Product X” Destroys Microbes, Blowtorches Body Fat, Fights Fatigue, and Powers Performance.

Alright folks - I usually don't get this excited about a discovery, but when we're talking about a substance that is all-natural, amazingly simple to find, and incredibly diverse, it is well worth the buzz.

In this February 10, 2009 podcast, I interview a farmer in Palouse, Idaho.

And what he reveals to me is going to blow your mind. Let's just call it "Product X" for now. Before I tell you more about Product X, I want to remind you about three important studies that are highly relevant to fat loss, and that are going to help you understand why your body is probably more messed up that you think it is. These are studies that your physician, personal trainer, and nutritionist are probably not going to tell you about.

This is NOT run-of-the-mill fat loss advice. Here's the first study (and remember, you should read this part because it ties in very closely with Product X):

1) "Antibodies Against Food Antigens are Correlated with Inflammation and Intima Media Thickness in Obese Juveniles"

What the HECK does that mean?

This study looked at kids, half of whom were normal weight and half of whom were overweight (i.e. "obese juveniles").

The researchers measured the children's levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker for inflammation in the body.

Then they used an ultrasound to look for plaque or thickening in the carotid arteries (the main arteries that supply the brain).

Finally, they looked at blood tests for IgG, which show food allergies.

Guess what?

The overweight kids had 3 times higher CRP levels and 2.5 times higher IgG antibodies food allergy levels, and these values are almost 10 times higher than what other studies have found up to this point!

The overweight kids also had much thicker carotid arteries - a huge risk for heart disease.

How did this happen? When the gut is damaged by consumption of foods to which you are allergic, it becomes leaky, and these allergic food particles put your immune system on hyper-alert.

Your hyped-up immune system then triggers an inflammatory response. And guess what happens next? Your cells become insensitive to insulin. This leads to insulin resistance. And insulin resistance leads to belly fat.

So while you're busy counting calories and making sure that you drink the "skinny latte", I've got NEWS. It is WAY more important that your body is not allergy to those milk proteins then that you are drinking low calorie.

And this is why I am now recommending that every one of my nutrition and exercise clients get food allergy testing. Especially the ones that are having trouble losing weight. But why take my word that a leaky gut causes inflammation? Here's another study:

2) "Metabolic endotoxemia initiates obesity and insulin resistance."

This study looked at what causes a leaky gut.

In this study, researchers fed thin mice a very high-fat diet.

Why a high-fat diet? Because high-fat diets (and we're not talking about good fats like nuts and olives and avocadoes - we're talking about crackers, muffins, and margarine) promote toxin-producing bugs, and these bad bugs kill the good bugs.

Interestingly, sugars do the same thing.

Here's what the researchers discovered: the toxins produced in the mice triggered killed off the good bacteria in the stomach of the mice and produced inflammation and obesity.

So let's do a review of what we've learned so far: A) food allergies make you fat; B) sugar and bad fats produce inflammation, which also makes you fat.

BY THE WAY, "sugar" and "bad fats" include whole wheat muffins, pasta, wheat thin crackers, and organic ice cream. Here's the third and last study:

3) "The gut microbiota as an environmental factor that regulates fat storage."

I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. This study found that people with good bugs in their gut lose weight quickly, and those with bad bugs in their gut gain weight and pile on body fat. And if you want to really get into the details of why, you should listen to Podcast Episode #29 with the Fat Flush Doctor.

So now we know that gut inflammation, bad bugs, food allergies, toxins, fungus, and microbes can make you fat. Not to mention giving you chronic fatigue, bad sports performance, insomnia, repeated bouts of sickness, and a host of other problems.

But how on earth does all this tie into Product X? Consider the following powerful excerpts:

“(Washington, D.C.) Oil from the common herb Product X may be an effective treatment against dangerous, and sometimes drug-resistant bacteria, a Georgetown researcher has found. Two studies have shown that Product X Oil—and, in particular, Carvacrol, one of Product X's chemical components—appear to reduce infection as effectively as traditional antibiotics.…

Harry G. Preuss, MD, MACN, CNS, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, and his research team, tested Product X Oil on Staphylococcus bacteria—which is responsible for a variety of severe infections and is becoming increasingly resistant to many antibiotics. They combined Product X Oil with the bacteria in a test tube, and compared Product X Oil's effects to those of standard antibiotics Streptomycin, Penicillin and Vancomycin. She's a swimmer and practices 2 1/2 hrs 4 times/wk and attends meets 2 times/month. My daughter is 5 ft 3 inches and weighs 103#. She swims year round and is off 3 weeks in the fall and in the spring. I noticed during her fall/winter season, she was often sick, fatigued, and her swim times didn't improve. After evaluating her food intact, I noticed she was only eating about 20-30 grams of protein/day. She is a "picky" eater and prefers carbs over protein. I have since been pushing protein, but I'm having difficulties getting her to eat a variety of sources. She will eat chicken, turkey, and eggs. I've tried a variety of whey protein smoothes, but she doesn't like them. She takes a multi-vitamin. I will be changing her to one you recommend on your web site. How much protein should she be getting and are there any other supplements you think would be helpful for her? I've noticed when I consume a protein shake containing whey that my blood sugar takes a dive within an hour and I have to eat something else. I've observed with any mix with whey in it. I currently have some Hammer whey and some Mt. Capra double bonded goat protein powder. On the other hand, if I consume a protein shake with other kinds of protein--and in this case I'm referring specifically to Living Fuel (which is brown rice and yellow pea protein) or Nutiva Hemp protein powder that I can potentially go 4-5 hours quite comfortably. I thought perhaps it was just what I was adding to the powder or when I was using it. In an effort to sort it out, in the last month I started to use all of the above (proteins) in the exact same way (after exercise,) and I kept the added ingredients that I added exactly the same--almond milk and frozen strawberries. I got the same results. Whey behaves like it is giving me a glycemic spike--even when consumed in those first 30 minutes after exercise. Does this mean I just don't do well with whey? What is going on here --I'm perplexed. Mike asks: Ben, you've mentioned that taking vitamin supplements near the time of drinking coffee can reduce the affects. How long before or after drinking coffee should one take supplements to get the most benefit. In your experience, how much easier is it to lose weight being off of hormonal birth control? Also what is your opinion of non-hormonal IUDs? Also, it appears yours is almost 1500 mg  which is three times the 500 mg on the Swanson brand. Jackie asks: Hi Ben. I've heard chia seeds have all the essential omega-3/omega-6's. Is this true, and are they in the correct ratio? Can chia seeds replace fish oil as a vegetarian option? (And are they better to or comparable to flax seed?)   Mark asks: Just bought a new stationary bike trainer (with Power Meter) to add additional cross-training to my marathon training. Love the bike and the additional training at odd hours and bad weather is great. The problem I'm having is the toe clips (I think), I believe they are causing achilles pain that I feel when I run. The pain is real close to the heal. I switched shoes but that didn't make a difference. I lowered the saddle that didn't make a difference. I've decided to remove the toe clips next. Any ideas that might help? hksparky asks: As I've learned we train at the top of the Fat Burning Zone in order to teach our bodies how to burn fat. (1) Why bother teaching our bodies that when we race well into our Carb Burning zone? What race benefits do I get if my body will never see that low HR in a race? (2) Is it possible to train my body so that the top of my Fat Burning HR zone allows me to run at my race pace? (3) When you run your 1:30 Half Marathon in the Half Ironman's are you burning predominately Fat? Paul asks: I am planning on running a 50 mile ultramarathon. My question is what type of training would your recommend. I would think 5 days of running per week with some type of interval/hill work each week, but not sure. Also with high running mileage I assume that cross training would be minimal? Paul asks: I had something really strange happen to me after a race recently. After completing a 14 mile trail race, I took a seat. When I stood back up and reached down for my water, I got this crazy taste in my mouth. To me it tasted like my fillings. My hands also seemed to tingle. It lasted about a minute or two. Granted, I was a bit undertrained, and probably a bit dehydrated, but never had this happen before. Is it true and if it is, why? Thanks! Kalley asks: My question is about my heart rate, specifically when working out. I am 24, a very healthy weight, and active. I've been working out with a trainer for 8 months. I do a lot of strength training, and a decent amount of cardio (varying comfortable jogs and interval training) - but I feel like I have an abnormally high heart rate. When I do intervals, my heart rate will jump to over 200. When I am jogging at a comfortable pace (one I could easily hold a conversation during) my heart rate is around 170 - 180. I'm baffled. Everything I've read suggests that is too high - but I'm an active, healthy 24 year old. Is it possible that my heart rate is higher than normal? I know the standard equation (226 minus your age) isn't necessarily accurate, but a lot of resources lead me to believe I am either horribly out of shape, or have a heart problem. I would love to here your thoughts on how to make this work while training for endurance events. Issa asks: What is advisable to use Spiropent? Does it have any side effects? Nick asks: You have mentioned Bioletics on the podcast before however I can not recall you ever talking about Spectracell (they offer a simlar testing service), and was wondering if you had heard of them / what your opinion on them is, specifically the Micronutrient test. Susan asks: I'm intrigued by the biolectics testing. When I last had blood work done, I had asked for a cortisol test. It consisted of 1 blood draw in the morning. With the sudden weight gain I've experienced (yes, I guess I am in menopause - previous podcast #142)I'm just grasping at straws, trying to figure if there's ANYTHING I can do. I am 24 years old and have been on birth control pills since I was 18. In the last year or so I have taken a real interest in my health: changing my diet to be mostly real foods, working out with a personal trainer, and begun training for a half marathon. That said, I have become increasingly aware of the lack of (credible) information available surrounding birth control and the effects it may have on women's hormone levels, weight loss, and overall health. Estrogen seems to be linked to many health problems, so the increased amount being introduced into my system through daily birth control doses makes me nervous. (Especially considering we are also exposed in other forms in the environment). What are your thoughts on this topic? What kind of effects may taking birth control have? Should I be worried about this? Are there some forms of birth control that are better for overall health than others? Amy asks: I was watching a video interview of Jenn Shelton recently and have been impressed by her ultramarathoning, as I am hoping to run an ultra in the next year or so. She briefly talks about her diet and basically says it isn't a good one, she loves Taco Bell & Mountain Dew. How can she run ultras as well as she does while fueling in a not-so-healthy manner? Stephen asks: A guy at work is telling me about Dr. Hulda Clark and her parasite zapper. He swears by it's effectiveness. Hocus Pocus or real medicine?? This might be an interesting topic for an upcoming podcast. I'd like to hear what you think. glen asks: Hi Ben. First, thanks for your earlier advice on maintaining optimal T levels while I was prepping for my first BB show at the young age of 53. It was instrumental in winning the NPC Natural Ohio Over 50 Master's Championship on April 16th. Fast forward to today, after a 2 week major flu illness, I am back to training, but would like to add minimumal 5k mileage training to compete competitively in my age group this summer. Any suggestions on how to incorporate my mileage and pace training as not to burn up my lean mass. I am lifting 2days on, 1 day off, 2 days on per week. Presently, I am doing treadmill work for 2 miles at a moderate pace 3 days a week. Have competed in 5k's in years past and know I have to bump up my mileage and intensity, therefore need your expertise in accomplishing this in a intelligent manner. Kyle asks: If I person has full glycogen stores at the start of a marathon, which is enough to run approximately 16-18 miles, why does so many online articles about the marathon say that running out of glycogen is the cause of "hitting the wall" when a runner is only getting about 70% of their fuel from glycogen, and other 30% or so from fat? Also take into account that they are likely fueling with some sort of CHO supplementation during the event. What I'm asking is, is there any physiological basis for fatigue occurring at mile 20? James asks: Any suggestions on how to resolve why I consistently can't sleep on higher training volume days (any day I ride 50 or more miles or do a brick workout)? Kathy asks: I had a question about how much Vitamin A and beta carotene to take in. My husband, who is 31, and I are both into cycling, and he's gearing up for his second season of triathlons. He smoked heavily from roughly 16 - 28. From what I have read, it seems that smokers or ex-smokers should avoid supplements with either Vitamin A or beta carotene. We eat a fairly healthy diet, and he eats a ton of fruit and probably two servings of vegetables a day. I considered trying the enerprime superfood you recommend, as we travel once a month or so, but was hesitant due to the extra beta carotene put in. What are your thoughts? Craig asks: In the Q&A section of episode 139 you mentioned flax reducing the effect of estrogen. We secretly give our daugher, who just started puberty, ground flax for fiber. Anyway, should we be concerned with the effects of flax on her physical development? I recently quit, but I am wondering if there are any supplements or health tricks that might help my lungs heal faster and to keep me motivated from going back to the dreaded cigarettes? I have run a marathon while smoking, and I can't wait to run one smoke free! Melanie asks: Not to keep on the whole fasted morning exercise thing that you've talked about, but I'm wondering your opinion on a very small woman with no muscle to lose on what point should I actually be concerned of "eating" muscle. I'm 5'2 and 105 and approx. 17% body fat. I want to get to 13 - 14% body fat but don't need to lose much weight or any muscle. Should I even be doing fasted exercise? Is it okay to do fasted 45 minute strength training? Susan asks: Please Help! How can I tell if I'm truly in menopause or experiencing exercise induce amenorrhea. I lost my cycle at age 42 while doing heavy volume triathlon training while following a low carb vegetarian diet (stupid, I know). I got very lean. Dr. figured it was related to low body fat. Now almost 4 years later, it has not returned - I cont. to train heavily but BOOM! put on almost 10# even though I made no changes to my regimen. Now doc says it's menopause. My FSH wa 34.8 (menopausal) but my LH was low (7.2). I've tried to research but, from what I can tell, the levels are usually either both high or both low. Do my results mean anything? Todd asks: I switched gyms and have gone from chlorine pool to saline pool. I find my times are better and swimming seems a bit easier. Is this because of saline buoyancy? Gerry asks: Hi Ben, my best half marathon time to date is 95 min. However, in a 70.3 race, I've struggled to go faster. My best there is 115 min. What's the most effective way to train to improve that half marathon time during a 70.3 race? I'd like to do it under 100 min without fatigue or cramps. Janet asks: I work out 30 min. every morning six days a week. My workouts are 1 minute hard resistance/ cycling with cadence of 55 or 60 with my heart rate getting up to max 180 beats followed by recovery for 1 minute with cadence of 50 or 60 and heart rate around 150. Workout Is 30 min. Could you give me some ideas for other spinning workouts I could do? Can my body get too accustomed to this? Mike asks: I recently passed a kidney stone. My urologist had me do a 24 hr urine test, which showed high urinary calcium and oxalate. He has recommended I avoid Vitamin D supplementation (I'm currently taking 3000 IU daily), as well as decreasing coffee, cola, chocolate, nuts, spinach and green leafy vegetables. I don't drink cola and only 2 cups of coffee/day, but I really don't want to give up my big salad, handful of nuts, and small piece of dark chocolate. I've researched other "high oxalate" foods and it's a lot of otherwise very healthy foods that I love! What can you suggest for eating healthy while maintaining a "low oxalate" diet. Tony asks: I have recently finished my first 1/2 marathon, and my first Biathlon. My partner and I are signing up for a trail marathon in October. We are both in good shape and are dedicated to being better. I am a professionally diagnosed genetic hypertension person. I take two tablets each morning so that I will not stroke out. They are Procardia and Hyzaar. As I train, how should I approach supplements? What type of drug interactions do I need to be aware of? Melanie asks: Melanie asks: Hi Ben, What do you know about D-ribose? A health and fitness person that I follow sometimes said he just completed his own trial of ribose after being sent a sample and said after one week he felt a big difference in his energy level. Wondering if this is a good option to increase energy and what the drawbacks might be? Carlos calls in and asks: I am just a beginning amateur runner and am wondering if "regular" Multivitamins and Protein will be detrimental to my health. I hear you mention a lot of things about regular multivitamins and other regular supplements, but you never recommend them. Are they actually unhealthy for a beginner like me? By "regular" I mean, the more popular & affordable supplements used by a greater number of people such as products by Nature Made, GNC, and Optimum Nutrition. Are the supplements you recommend specifically for triathletes? My health is no where near a triathlete. Do I still need to take these "special" supplements or am I good taking the regular ones? Weekend Special Update: "How To Grow a Healthy Baby"

In this September 27, 2009 free audio weekend update, Ben has a special guest on the show to discuss how to grow a healthy baby. Here is the letter that accompanies this episode, written by Jessa Greenfield from Bud Organics: "For the past six months, Marta Greenfield and I have been developing a fresh, new and exciting idea.  We have been working very hard on a business plan, marketing strategy, community surveys, focus groups and many hours of due diligence – and we now feel that we are ready to unveil this business and our product to you. The organic industry has grown by over 20% in the last three years, while the commercial food industry has suffered as consumers become more aware of where and how their food is grown.  Along with this growing trend, many parents are becoming aware that commercial baby food is not the best way to feed their babies.  Every parent wants the best for their baby, and it is becoming more apparent that what is on the shelf right now is not the best, and could actually be harming a baby’s fragile body. I experienced the same feeling as I searched for the right baby food to grow healthy bodies for River and Terran. I learned that the common method of preserving baby food is canning.  The problem with this is that the food is heated to a very high temperature to kill the bacteria that cause botulism. This heating method kills much of the nutrition in the food. An inspection of the ingredients in all the commercial baby foods revealed the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), which are crops generally made up of corn, soy, cotton and sugar beets. These have been linked to allergies, asthma, digestive ulcers, learning disabilities, cancer, low birth weight, infertility and antibiotic resistance! I didn’t want these for River and Terran, especially since most of the world has banned GMO’s based on multiple research studies. The baby food found on the shelves of most grocery stores is comprised of fruits and vegetables that were picked several months before ripeness, rendering the food tasteless and deprived of nutrients. Furthermore, harsh chemical preservatives are necessary to keep the food for many months as it is shipped around the country (typically grown hundreds or thousands of miles from the economy where it is finally purchased), and nutrient-stripped “fillers” such as corn, soy and wheat are added to thicken the product. Many of the pesticides found in non-organic commercial baby foods contain probable human carcinogens, neurotoxins and pesticides that disrupt the normal functioning of the hormone system, and some of the pesticides are considered “Category One”, which is the highest designation of oral toxicitiy. A 2003 Washington University study found that babies who were fed organically had six times fewer pesticides in their urine than those that were not fed organically! I learned that A) much of an infant’s digestive and neurological development happens in the first 2 years of life; B) an infant’s body is less efficient in eliminating toxins; and C) an infant’s digestive tract absorbs much more than an adult’s. This was the final straw. Our goal for River and Terran was to raise them in as healthy a manner as possible, and commercial baby food was obviously not the solution, for their well-being, for our local farmers, or for any of the other mothers in Spokane, Coeur D’ Alene and across the United States. So after countless hours spent in the kitchen, on farms, in the library, in grocery stores and with mothers from across the region Marta and I have established a solution: Bud Organics. In sum, Bud Organics will be a producer of frozen organic baby food. But what is most important to Marta and I is to provide an affordable, quality alternative to commercial baby food to as many babies as possible.  We want to give these vulnerable young bodies the best possible start they can get.  That means that their food should be incredibly fresh and 100% free of pesticides and GMO’s, with zero “nutrient-void” fillers, preservatives, and chemicals. How are we going to ensure this? We have established a relationship with farmers within a 200 mile radius of the Spokane and Coeur D’ Alene area. A majority of our produce will be bought locally from these farmers.  The reason for this is two-fold; 1) it helps with our local economy and our money stays in the area, supporting a sustainable region; 2) our food will not be picked months before ripeness, and shipped across the world, which would leave it tasteless and nutrient deplete. To ensure freshness, our food will be picked at the peak of ripeness and processed immediately in our certified organic kitchen in Spokane.  All the produce used will be “certified organic”, which ensures that there are no pesticide or herbicides sprayed on the produce that goes into our product. Not only will none of the common “filler” ingredients like flour, soy and corn appear in our food, but because our produce is organic, there will be no GMO's. We have also established a relationship with several local grocery stores (both commercial and organic), farmer’s markets, mother’s groups and baby stores who are anxiously waiting for the first line of Bud Organics to hit the market. And the unique method of preservation? We can ensure our product is more nutritious to our counterpart because we freeze our product. Freezing still gives a six month shelf life, but doesn't kill any of the food components, and instead locks in the valuable nutrients until the product is naturally thawed and ready for the baby to eat! The combination of frozen, fresh and organic baby food is a unique concept with a massive market, as the numbers in our business plan and market analysis have proven to us. We want to ensure that we fund farms that are growing and helping the local environment that we are leaving to our children.  Organically grown produce is a sustainable method of farming.  Rather than stripping the land of nutrients, organic farming grows soil by composting and applying natural matters (not chemical), planting poly-culture crops and letting their land “rest”. “But,” you may say, “My mom fed me non-organic food when I was raised and look at me!” That is very true, but today many weeds and pests have built up a resistance to the growing use of herbicides and pesticides, so more sprays have to be applied than what was needed 10, 20 or 30 years ago.  Also the FDA has said that the levels of pesticides and herbicides on commercially grown produce is OK for the adult consumer, but they have not taken in to account young children and infants.  Ultimately, there is a growing need for an alternative to commercial baby foods, and Bud Organics can be that alternative that parents are desperately searching for, exactly as I did. Despite knowing the danger that their baby faces, not every parent will be able experience what I experienced: spending hours at local farmer’s markets and then in their own kitchen, preparing, mixing and freezing their own organic, frozen baby food. And Bud Organics is the solution. Marta and I hope that you all find this as important as we do.  We have discovered that we find no better calling in life than to help our future generations grow up healthy and in a better, cleaner environment and economy.
