042: Surprising Signs of Burnout & the Habits You Need to Prevent It with Jessica Lackey

In today’s episode, we are diving into a topic that has affected us all: burnout. Burnout isn’t just feeling exhausted from overworking, it’s also this sense of dread around our work. Sometimes burnout happens because we’re neglecting our own needs, but it can also come from needing external validation and trying your worth to your accomplishments and achievements. If you’re resonating with this, you are not alone! Jessica Lackey is here to tell us how to recover from burnout and how to prevent it with some mindset and boundary hacks.

Jessica Lackey is a Business Integrator that helps visionary women+ leaders build sustainable businesses. Jessica combines master coaching with 15 years of experience in corporate America, with experience consulting at McKinsey and Company and operations leadership at Nike and Electrolux Major Appliances. Jessica is an ACC Certified Coach and an Awaken Your Life Master Coach-Trainer. Jessica has an MBA from Harvard Business School, engineering degrees from Virginia Tech and Penn State, and is also a Certified Holistic Nutritionist. Some key takeaways from this episode on burnout are:

  • The three elements of burnout are exhaustion, cynicism and detachment from work, and ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. You can feel exhausted from working on something you love and are proud of, but if you’re also feeling that cynicism and ineffectiveness, you’re probably burned out.
  • Some ways of slowing down are setting time limits on social media consumption, leaving white space in your calendar to do something relaxing, or scheduling a weekly relaxation ritual for yourself.
  • Trust yourself to allocate the right amount of effort to the right things, and let go of the rest. Not everything needs 100% of your effort, and some things might not need any of your attention at all.

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night. My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Join us every week for a new episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins!
