We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. 634: Overcoming your limiting beliefs

634: Overcoming your limiting beliefs

What are your limiting beliefs? In show 631 I talked with Mastin Kipp, author of “Claim Your Power” where his primary focus is finding your purpose...and the vehicle is understanding and overcoming...past trauma. Don’t just think tragedy, but any event in your life that helped create limiting beliefs, which we ALL, have. Powerful show, again, #631. I’ve been enamored with the message and have been working through the book in detail. But I wanted to hear more...and hear from you regarding Mastin’s message of hope and turning your trauma and limiting beliefs...into power. So I asked on Facebook, "What is a limiting belief you work to overcome?" I asked it in that way because, you may never totally get rid of it, even if you are able to succeed anyway. A big deal question…of course...we got great responses. Tom Ziglar joined me to read through the comments...you’ll greatly appreciate hearing real people dealing with real issues...and striving to overcome.  Learn more about your ad choices. 633: Being relational when it’s not your nature - Habits with Mastin Kipp

633: Being relational when it’s not your nature - Habits with Mastin Kipp

Mastin Kipp was our guest in show 631 where we focused on dealing with past traumatic events to help get us unstuck and progressing forward. Mastin is the best selling author of “Claim Your Power.” In this show, we walk through his personal habits for success, following of course the 7 spokes in the Ziglar Wheel of Life that we hit on much in this show. It was interesting to hear that Mastin, a guy who is influencing a sea of people regarding personal and relational health, he cites that he is not naturally...a relational person. I have to say I could relate, I wonder if many of you will also. You can connect with Mastin and what he has to offer you, including his book, at mastinkipp.com. Learn more about your ad choices. 632: How everything in your life affects everything in your life

632: How everything in your life affects everything in your life

“Everything in your life matters.” In this show we get a message from Zig Ziglar on how everything in our life...matters. Everything affects everything, and what that means. What is happening good and bad in your work, affects your family life, your mental wellness, for example. From it I posted this question on Facebook: “What is one area of your life you improved, only to find it positively affected and improved OTHER areas of your life?” (You can use the 7 spokes in the Ziglar Wheel of Life for reference, which of course is:1.Physical & Nutrition2.Family3.Mental4.Financial5.Spiritual6.Career7.Personal Great, great replies with lots of variance I think you’ll find you relate and of course will be...inspired. I had Michelle Prince join me to talk through your comments. 631: Mastin Kipp, How to dissolve your trauma and move forward

631: Mastin Kipp, How to dissolve your trauma and move forward

In this show we are talking about a big premise: that all your limits. All the handicaps of your mind, all your anchors and achilles heels and everything holding you back from your full potential come from...a primary source. Sounds too much already, doesn’t it? Just another claim to be the holy grail. I feel you. But then after this talk...well, it’s pretty convicting. If it’s not THE primary thing, I have now come to believe it is one of the TOP...primary things. And it is...unresolved trauma in your life. And before you say, “Hey, I’ve never had any real trauma, I’ve never been abused or lacked for much...you could have come from a privileged home and loving parents and tried to live up to high expectations that became somewhat of an anchor for you that you are imprisoned in or tired of...but the point, you have a limiting factor or belief rooted in your past programming and wiring. And until you get rewired, you will be stuck or at least handicapped. My guest is Mastin Kipp, a number one best-selling author of Claim Your Power and Daily Love, speaker and Creator of Functional Life Coaching™ for people who are seeking rapid transformation in their lives. He has been featured on the Emmy Award show, Super Soul Sunday, and recognized as a “thought leader for the next generation” by Oprah Winfrey. Mastin has built a highly successful international personal development company that helps people create rapid change, connect to who they really are and how to live their lives with passion and purpose. Through his writing, online courses, in-person seminars and international retreats, Mastin has worked with over two million people in over 100 countries around the world. I’ll tell you this folks, I was greatly impacted and have talked about this concept much since my time with Mastin. I’d highly encourage you to really dig into this conversation with us. You can find his book which has the message we gave focus to here, “Claim Your Power”, wherever you buy books, and connect with Mastin at mastinkipp.com. Learn more about your ad choices. 630: Living up to or overcoming your labels

630: Living up to or overcoming your labels

We hear a message from Zig Ziglar on how we all succumb to lifetime conditioning. Literally how we all tend to give more attention and value to taller people than shorter, just as an example. And how it affects us all. From this message I posted on Facebook, this question:  "Do you have any labels attached to you? 1) What positive labels have you lived up to, and/or, 2) What negative labels have you had to overcome (or maybe want to)?" NOTE - These labels could have been given to you, or self-imposed. Great, great responses, of course. Tom Ziglar joined me to talk through the comments Learn more about your ad choices. 629: Changing up your habits to keep them fresh - Habits with Lori Harder

629: Changing up your habits to keep them fresh - Habits with Lori Harder

We are back with Lori Harder. Being a three time fitness champion, you’d of course expect some healthy habits. But physical is just ONE of the spokes, right? Some things she shared...She has a spoken, morning mantra. Her rule for decisions is whether she feels a full body yes or not, and a healthy habit for her marriage is she’s learning to golf for her husband and he’s taking ballroom dancing lessons for her. But what was really interesting is her talking about the need to change her habits frequently to keep them from getting stagnant. I think this will be freeing and exciting to a lot of you...it sure was confirming for me, as I’m the same. You’ll enjoy hear this show and of course be...inspired. Learn more about your ad choices. 628: How to gain a positive outlook on life

628: How to gain a positive outlook on life

We hear a short message from Zig Ziglar on mindset, and the reality that you can't change from a negative mindset to a positive mindset without changing your input from negative to positive. Sounds simplistic, but then, so is eating only from the salad bar when you’re at a pizza place...totally abstaining from the pizza. Simple. But diabolically hard. So it’s a significant perspective you’ll want to hear from Zig. From that message I posted this question on Facebook, “1) What are your primary sources of positive input (people, books, podcasts, music, art, etc...), and 2) What are the primary sources of negative input you work to avoid?” So many wonderful responses, you’ll come away with a great list. I brought Michelle Prince on with me to talk through all the comments. You’ll gain much from this show.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

627: Lori Harder - How to create your supportive tribe

627: Lori Harder - How to create your supportive tribe

We talk with Lori Harder, about the power, necessity and opportunity of having a tribe. It’s just an irrefutable fact that people with strong social circles live longer, happier, healthier lives. But how do you achieve this for your own life? We cover it in a massively equipping conversation in this show. I asked Lori to join me because she has one of the top ranked health podcasts on the planet called "Earn your happy", she recently published a book titled "A Tribe Called Bliss", and she is just massively inspiring a lot of people. She grew up in an unhealthy, uninspiring home and it compelled her to go a radically different direction. She started off in the fitness world and ultimately  became a three time fitness world champion. She's been featured on the cover of the world's top fitness magazines as a model 18 times, and published articles in those mags as well. But all that to me seems a small beginning compared to where she's gone from there. She now has two million dollar businesses and is a self-proclaimed personal development junkie. Friends, I read and review a lot of books. Her's...I asked for more of. I took some home. My wife dove in and gave books to HER tribe. Lori has some powerful insights that I'll wager you will find yourself lacking in and massively empowered by Lori to pursue and conquer. Personally she got me looking yet again at my boundaries, or lack of, and how I deal with expectations in my relationships, so I...can have a healthier tribe. Ultimately Lori’s book and message is based off the  concept that you become who you are surrounded with! That you become the sum of the 5 people you are closet with!
