We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. How To Lead With Influence | New Year Special with Tom Ziglar & Dr Randy James

How To Lead With Influence | New Year Special with Tom Ziglar & Dr Randy James

To ring in the new year I have a special show for you where we take to task…leadership. I don’t find that people are as interested in the traditional concept of leadership as they are just being able to be a positive influence in other’s lives and helping and serving them. This is actually what true leadership is. My guests today are my most frequent co-hosts. Randy James, medical doctor and functional medicine expert, and Tom Ziglar, CEO of Ziglar and son of Zig Ziglar. These two men are two of my closest and dearest friends, and two of the greatest experts and students of self-help and personal growth. My initial intent was to have us audit our own year of self-help and offer insight and resources, but Tom got on to this topic of leadership and we just couldn’t let it go, as it hit to the core of our work and personal lives and we did a lot of discussion on parenting and influencing people. I stuck with the topic and my original intent you’ll hear in the next episode of Self-Helpful. We dig deep into the purpose we all find in solving problems and bringing solutions to others. The power and inspiration of being curious. And the necessity of personal and social awareness for ultimate success and fulfillment. The Self-Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches to help leaders and top performers excel professionally and personally. Get Clear On What Sets You Apart | Matt McWilliams Part 3 with Dan Miller

Get Clear On What Sets You Apart | Matt McWilliams Part 3 with Dan Miller

In the workplace and in life, great opportunity comes to those who set themselves apart. We’re not talking about attention seeking or being better than others, but simply being clear and communicating what you can uniquely offer, which is the point. Whatever you do, you can do uniquely. Again, not better or brand new, but something coming from you in a new way, perspective, flavor or application. This is part 3 on Matt McWilliams and the message in his new book, “Turning Passions Into Profits.” In this episode I bring on Dan Miller, famed author of “48 Days To The Work You Love” and one of the premier experts and voices regarding turning passions into profits. Matt cites Dan as a teacher and mentor, so no more fitting person to continue this discussion. Dan is also…my father. We really land on the necessity and opportunity of standing out with what you can uniquely offer, and this isn’t simply a discussion for work and business. Think about your personal life and those you are most drawn to and feel cared by. You will likely be very clear on what about them most stands out to you, and you can audit yourself for what you want people to feel from you. You can still  preorder Matt’s book, “Turning Passions Into Profits” now at passionsintoprofitsbook.com/self and get over $700 of bonuses. You can find Dan Miller at 48days.com. Leverage The Benefits of ADHD & Low Empathy | Matt McWilliams Part 2

Leverage The Benefits of ADHD & Low Empathy | Matt McWilliams Part 2

My guest has ADHD, but he doesn’t see it as a problem and instead works to leverage it as a benefit. He also has low empathy, but here too he finds times where it’s actually a benefit. I’m back for part 2 with Matt McWilliams after talking about the message in his new book, Turn Your Passions Into Profits. This is my Values, Motives & Habits episode where we go behind the curtain to find out what drives Matt and how he lives from within his passions. He does admit that ADHD makes it hard to practice quiet time, which he knows is important and works to achieve. He shares his journey of losing 88 pounds which he cites was holding him back. In his work and with his team a primary objective is to "ruthlessly protect our downtime." And regarding work and money we discuss a line I pulled from his social media where he says, “I vacillate between wanting to change the world and wanting to be independently wealthy by the end of next Tuesday." You can preorder Matt’s book, “Turning Passions Into Profits” now at passionsintoprofitsbook.com/self and get over $700 of bonuses. You Are On The Diabetes Spectrum & How To Stay Low | Functional Friday

You Are On The Diabetes Spectrum & How To Stay Low | Functional Friday

We tend to think of diabetes as something you have or not, like a broken leg. But diabetes in simple terms is an issue of your body being able to deal with sugar, and in our culture we all take in more sugar than our body is equipped to deal well with. In America more than one out of three Americans have diabetes or prediabetes. This is my Functional Friday episode where we focus on our health and wellness so we have the physical and mental capacity to help ourselves and others…and today we are breaking down diabetes. I’m with my co host Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and he showcases that we are all on the diabetes spectrum and it’s not simply an issue of whether we tip over the edge into a full on diabetes diagnosis or not. The causes and symptoms of prediabetes need to be on your radar for yourself and if you have kids…for them. What are the chief culprits, and it’s not just high sugar foods and drinks. Who is more at risk and why? This show is relevant for everyone, us included. How To Discover & Make Money Doing What You Care About & Have Skill To Fulfill | Matt McWilliams Part 1

How To Discover & Make Money Doing What You Care About & Have Skill To Fulfill | Matt McWilliams Part 1

Work at what you love. Work at what you’re passionate about. We hear this message a lot, yet few people are really doing it, and I’m submitting here that we tend to view it wrong. Let’s drop the baggage you may think of around words like love and passion and just think on something you care about. Wouldn’t you rather have a surgeon working on you who knows more than how to do the surgery, but really, inherently cares about helping people? If she/he does care, they will likely do a better job and help you and themselves far more. What do you care about that is a good fit for you and the marketplace. Then, how do you best make money with it? This is our focus today, to take an age old issue and breath new, paradigm shifting light into it. My guest is Matt McWilliams. Matt has been helping people make money about what they care about for a long time, including names you’ll likely know such as Shark Tank’s Kevin Harrington, Tony Robbins, Michael Hyatt, Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Lewis Howes, Brian Tracy and more. I’ve know Matt a long time and know first hand from scores of people how he’s helped them hone in on something they care about, and then, his specialty, how to make money from it. Not simply so you can make money, but so you can…in order to keep doing what you care about. I want you doing what you care about. It makes you happy and fulfilled and from that you will give happiness and fulfillment to others! Matt is just now releasing his new book titled, “Turn Your Passions Into Profits” and it was my muse for this discussion. He really turns the tables on many of our misconceptions around this concept, so you’ll hear some paradigm shifting info right off the bat. Of interest, my publisher wants me to get 250 or more pre-orders of my book on Amazon before publication date, as it helps take it to the top of the rankings. Matt has over 1,200 already. You can pre-order now at passionsintoprofitsbook.com/self and get a truckload of add on bonuses. passionsintoprofitsbook.com/self The Self-Help(ful) podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches to help leaders and top performers excel professionally and personally. Love - How To Be It Instead Of Do It | Humble The Poet Part 3 with Jared Angaza

Love - How To Be It Instead Of Do It | Humble The Poet Part 3 with Jared Angaza

When you break it down and really look at it, nearly all our attempts to love others are action based. They are things we do. One of the bestselling self-help books of all time is The 5 Love Languages and it cites words of affirmation, receiving gifts, quality time, physical touch and acts of service. But all of those are…acts. Things we do. And yet where we feel the most love from people is not in any act, but in them connecting with us. Being love, in essence, not doing love. This is part 3 on the message from Humble The Poet and his new book, How To Be Loved. Today I’m talking about Humble and his message with again, my brother, Jared Angaza. I just keep having guests that are right in Jared’s wheelhouse of experience, so I brought him back on. I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback about Jared and his insight, and as you hear me mention in this show, he’s the brand and culture architect behind my new look, which you can see at kevinmiller.co. You can connect with him at jaredangaza.com. Here we also take aim at the idea of you not being able to love others beyond the extent to which you love yourself. What we came to is…you can loathe yourself and still do…a lot of loving. You can do a lot of acts of love. But it’s pretty impossible to be the love they need, if you can’t be the love you need for yourself. It’s a big distinction. What this episode will do is help you see why so many of your efforts to love others don’t end up being the love they really need and you’re killing yourself for nothing. You can make a shift, and quit wearing yourself out, and finally connect in a way that matters to you and those you…love. Equip Yourself To Receive & Retain Happiness, Joy, and Hope | Functional Friday

Equip Yourself To Receive & Retain Happiness, Joy, and Hope | Functional Friday

“Happiness” is a dramatically popular topic today, as many are not feeling so happy. A very real issue however is whether you have the mental and physical ability to even adequately receive and retain happiness, and further, joy and hope. If you keep scrambling for happy moments but it doesn’t last, maybe you have a leak. Imagine I had a pitcher of your favorite beverage, wine, coffee, or tea. You hold your mug or glass out and I pour in the glorious elixir. But alas, before your container reaches your lips, the liquid drains out through multiple cracks. You get nothing. So you go back for a refill only to never get it to your lips. Are you pursuing happiness but some of it is falling through the cracks of your compromised body and mind which don’t have the capacity to contain it? This is my Functional Friday episode and I’m with Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and we talk through this very real and present issue, a growing issue, in our culture today. What is causing the leaks and what to do about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
