Masks, COVID-19, Asthma & the Return to School (S3:E64)

Please join us for this week's COVID-19 Virtual Provider Town Hall, Thursday, August 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. MST:  https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4458292460271814414 The topic of face masks or face coverings use and their efficacy has rapidly morphed into one of the most divisive topics in American culture. Mandated by many government bodies in the US and around the globe, these face coverings have been encouraged to slow the spread of COVID-19. We have heard from many of you, our listeners, that parents are asking for anticipatory guidance around mask wearing and their children, particularly chronic asthmatics.  In this our 18th COVID-19 podcast, we will discuss the AAP guidance around pediatric patients and face coverings, considerations for asthmatic patients and how these fit in with the return to school. In this episode we are joined by returning guest Monica Federico, MD, Medical Director of the Clinical Alignment and Asthma Programs at Children’s Colorado and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Mask Exemptions During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A New Frontier for Clinicians, published by JAMA Cloth Face Coverings for Children During COVID-19 from the American Academy of Pediatrics  Example letters referenced by Dr. Federico are forthcoming at the Charting Pediatrics website. Introducing Pediatrics On Call from the AAP with Joanna Parga-Belinkie, MD and David Hill, MD (S3:E63)

Introducing Pediatrics On Call from the AAP with Joanna Parga-Belinkie, MD and David Hill, MD (S3:E63)

When most of us were going through medical training the word podcast had still yet to be uttered. A mash-up of broadcast and ipod, the word was first introduced in 2004. But by 2020 the podcast platform has developed into an essential tool for dissemination of information amongst humans. Now we can get information on any conceivable topic and it seems inevitable that this will transform all continuing education, including medical education. We know that in pediatrics we still need trusted resources and in that spirit, today we are excited to introduce you to a new podcast on the block that you need to be aware of, AAP’s new Pediatrics On Call Podcast, we’re going to talk to its co-hosts and  discuss the future of CME and learning for pediatricians. Today we are pleased to be joined by Joanna Parga-Belinkie, MD and David Hill, MD, co-hosts of the AAP’s new podcast, Pediatrics On Call. Joanna is assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania  and a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She co-created the podcast Baby Doctor Mamas as her first foray into podcasting and has been a contributor and writer for many news outlets including The New York Times, NPR and NBC News. David is a pediatrician at Goldsboro Pediatrics in Wayne County, North Carolina, where he practices both hospitalist pediatrics and outpatient pediatrics. He is an adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He has written and commentated for NPR’s All Things Considered, is a frequent contributor to Parents Magazine and author of several books.

CAR-T Cellular Therapy: Advancing Pediatric Cancer Treatment with Terry Fry, MD and Michael Verneris, MD S3:E62

CAR-T Cellular Therapy: Advancing Pediatric Cancer Treatment with Terry Fry, MD and Michael Verneris, MD S3:E62

Cellular therapy is a new type of immunotherapy that is bringing hope to pediatric patients with blood cancers.  The therapy is more specifically known as chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy (or CAR-T cell therapy), and it has been hailed as a breakthrough in the field of immunotherapy. CAR-T cell therapy "takes the brakes" off the immune system's response. Essentially, it trains the cells within the immune system, called T cells, to see tumors they weren't naturally developed to recognize. Two years ago, we had the brilliant team of Terry Fry, MD and Mike Verneris, MD join us to discuss this therapy for patients with leukemia and other cancers; you can go back and listen to that initial discussion on Season 1, episode 33. We continue to hear from listeners how much they enjoyed this discussion of clinical invocation and application and decided that it was time to bring Dr. Fry and Dr. Verneris back to hear an update on their work and what the latest in the space of CAR-T cell therapy is.

Overcoming Demographic Disparities in Medicine with Vijaya Vemulakonda, MD, JD (S3:E60)

Overcoming Demographic Disparities in Medicine with Vijaya Vemulakonda, MD, JD (S3:E60)

Prenatally diagnosed with hydronephrosis, babies of ethnic minorities get surgery sooner than white ones, often within the first year. That's well documented; the trickier question is why. What role does implicit bias play, or at what point during the process does it come into play? What imaging studies do surgeons order, and how do they interpret the findings? How do those interpretations influence the decision whether to do surgery, or when? On today’s episode, we are going to talk with Vijaya Vemulakonda, MD, JD, about her work studying demographic disparity in medicine and how the electronic health record can help close the gap. Dr. Vemulakonda is a pediatric urologist at Children’s Colorado and Associate Professor of Surgery and Urology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. COVID-19 School Re-Entry Guidance with Sean O'Leary, MD and Heidi Baskfield, JD (S3:E59)

COVID-19 School Re-Entry Guidance with Sean O'Leary, MD and Heidi Baskfield, JD (S3:E59)

In this our 16th COVID-19 podcast, we will delve into the return to school guidance that both Children’s Hospital Colorado and the American Academy of Pediatrics have released and talk about how pediatricians can be advocates for the safe return to in-person learning in their communities. When schools across the United States halted in-person learning because of COVID-19 this Spring, many of us never predicted that students would remain in a remote learning status for the remainder of the school year. As school districts and teachers worked tirelessly to utilize all resources at their disposal, it became apparent that virtual learning was not an ideal education setting. From the lack of learning equity and access to critical services for many students to mental health impacts, many educators and pediatricians began talking about the importance of in-person learning resuming in some fashion for fall 2020.  Today we are joined by returning guest Sean O’Leary, MD. Sean is an infectious disease physician at Children’s Colorado and Director of the Colorado Pediatric Practice-Based Research Network. And we are happy to welcome Heidi Baskfield, JD to the podcast. Heidi is a lawyer by training and the Vice President of Population Health and Advocacy at Children's Hospital Colorado.
