Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 13, “The Zeppo” and episode 14 “Bad Girls.” Superfans: Selina and Karen Newbies: Kristen and Mitch Fun Facts: Karen is a traveling fool who slept with the windows open in NYC and caught some city gunk, but she also saw X-Men: Apocalypse and loved it. Mitch gives a glowing recommendation for AirB&B. Kristen bought Batman stamps and is super excited about them. Selina once had a dog named Zippo, which is almost Zeppo, so it's topical. We have a bit of a discussion about this whole Zeppo business to Mitch who was super confused. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 13, “The Zeppo”: -Synopsis -This was a fun departure from the normal storytelling structure. -Is Cordy pining after Xander? Or are they just reverting to their pre-relationship status quo? -Xander learns more about himself in this episode and finds some inner peace. -This episode helped Mitch see some growth in Xander. -Michael Cudlitz cuts his zombie teeth here before showing up on The Walking Dead. -Who else thought they were actually talking about baking a cake? -Xander and Faith get their freak on. Bow chicka wow wow. -Cordy and Xander weren't having sex. We definitely thought they were. -This says more about Cordelia than it does Xander. -Karen has some thoughts about Faith. -Could Xander losing his virginity to Faith cause problems later on? -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 14, "Bad Girls": -Let's talk about Fuffy. Did you see the ship? -Buffy wants to walk on the Faith side of things for a bit. -This episode was all about Buffy trying to feel free rather than be weighed down by guilt and worry. -How does this Slayer-death-calling-a-new-one-thing work? If Buffy died here, would another Slayer have been called? -Are the Slayers free from rules and laws of the world? SHOULD they be? -The downside of Faith's IDGAF philosophy is that she doesn't care even when she takes a human life. -The cardinal rule of slaying: Human or not? -We meet Wesley the Watcher in this episode. -Wesley is totally the stuffy version of Giles. Especially from Giles' persepective. -Obligatory discussion about how gross Balthazar is. Ugh. And we say the word "moisten" a lot. Even worse. -Is the mayor a big bad? Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 11, “Gingerbread”: -"Gingerbread" was not great, but we made it through -Joyce had something to do, but it still was still awful -Do these brainwashing scenarios reveal something about Joyce's true nature? -The Joyce and Giles awkwardness is one of the best strands of continuity -We meet Willow's very clinical mother in this episode -Xander and Willow's families make Joyce look a bit bitter -MOO shut it down! -First rule of Vampire Club: Don't talk about Vampire Club -Could we have an army of Hellmouth guards? -Harry Potter and Buffy-- too close for comfort -The reveal was quite clever with the nameless children -But... we still don't know some of the finer elements -Burn the children! Or not! -Amy is a rat. We'll deal with that later -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 12, “Helpless”: -ARIANA HAS A HAMILTON SYNOPSIS -This episode is truly a testament to Giles' character -Once things get explained, however, it's not great -We're stuck in a very gray area with Giles -Tradition is tradition, until it goes too far -Should we distrust The Watchers Council? -Buffy is choosing to focus on character development than vampire of the week and the show is more interesting for it -We're in season 3 and the characters still have room to grow -Giles' character switch mid-season is a refreshing storyline -Buffy has a great track record of remembering its history -A father's love for the child - sob -Oz and Xander- how do we feel about their friendship? -Buffy may understand what Giles did, but the seed is sown -Is this test even necessary? There is an issue of consent in the way it is set up -The Watched Council is on a power trip -And Brittany brings it back to The Hunger Games -The overalls of sadness are back for the final battle -The battle was dark and joyless- "no punning" -Cordelia is the human hero this show does not deserve, so great -Angel and Buffy have some kind of moment or something- at least they are aware of it -"Sometimes the best we can do is start over." - Peggy Carter -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Listener Feedback -Hannah appreciated Caitlin's commentary. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 7, "Revelations": -Xander and Willow, what do we like, what don't we like? -Natalie breaks down how we are all feeling -"Xander is the worst of the nice guys" -Let's use our "I" statements -We are team Cordelia and Oz -There is a always the fear that Angel is one step away from becoming Angelus -Buffy does have justifiable reasoning for wanting to keep Angel a secret, but there are other factors in play -Is there an easy solution to dealing with Angel's return? -Is Angel a victim of Angelus? -Faith is back and has a new Watcher! -The Council is awful -But wait, back to Xander being a horrible person and manipulating Faith -This was a great episode for Faith because we see her trust issues surface -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 8, "Lovers Walk": -This episode is one of Natalie's top 5 Buffy episodes -Soul, no soul, person, not a person- a very gray area that needs to be explored -The final cut of this episode caused a roller coaster of emotion -Does Spike have some residual Vampire Diaries emotional highs? -Cordelia and Oz are on another level in this episode -Xander's insecurities with Cordelia are frustrating, but he should not get to control his relationship with Willow -Will the couples get back together? -Cordelia and Angel, best revenge ever -Can we have a Cordelia vampire? -Sad Spike needs to move away from Dru forever -Spike and Joyce- spinoff please -There may be no morale compass in Spike, but he is much better than Angelus and likes the world -Superfans feel that even though we are in season 3, Buffy still feels like season 1 set up -Buffy and Angel have their final (?) goodbye -The final scene was very mature for Buffy to not only take care of her friends, but herself -Brace yourself, we talk about the SAT for a while -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Listener Feedback: -Brittany gets to talk about Ripper -Can we guess who a listener is mad at? Superfans: Karen and Caitlin Newbies: Kristen and Danielle Fun Facts: Karen is remembering Caitlin's visit to her old home in North Carolina, Caitlin is happy to be done grading, Danielle is excited to be seeing Karen very soon, and Kristen is pleased to finally be settling in to her and Karen's apartment. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 5, "Homecoming": -It was a little weird for Buffy to want to be Homecoming Queen so badly. It seemed like a step back. -Normal Joe-Schmoe's probably know Buffy as that girl that beat up the football players one time. -So, yeah... Willow and Xander. What the hell? -We sort of all agree that if this would have happened a season or two ago, we could be on board. Just not now. Except for Karen who definitely sees why Willow might stumble a bit here. -Slayer fest 1998! (Whoa time warp!) -Buffy and Cordy bonding time is amazing. -Scott breaks up with Buffy. Kind of yawny affair there. -We gush over Angel a little. He's pretty doing Tai Chi. -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 6, "Band Candy": -When we first heard about the candy, were we instantly suspicious? -Caitlin was very excited to do this pair of episodes. -First impressions of the mayor: He's such a weirdo. -We were all definitely attracted to teenage Giles. Yowzers. -Teenage Giles was pretty tame compared to what we've heard about what he was up to as a rebellious teenager. -The adults were more caricatures of teenagers. Then again, the Scooby gang has grown quickly. -Ethan is trouble, but a fun kind of trouble. -Snyder the teen is so much fun. He's that joiner that you try to avoid so often in high school. -Teenage Joyce was fun too. She seemed like a much more consistent personality as a teen than she sometimes comes off as in adulthood. -The mayor needs to sacrifice babies to a demon. Wait... what? -What do we think about Joyce and Giles? Ripper the series we want to see -Angel's butt has a very revealing debut -The plan was to for Angel to stay dead, but things changed -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 4, "Beauty and the Beasts": -This is a semi-Oz centric episode -Xander is constantly disappointing Giles -The domestic violence narrative is at its core about the man not the monster -Buffy explores the gray area of characters, especially what it means to have a soul -Angel is tortured in Hell for hundreds of years -"Anne" set up the timeline of alternate reality -Even after the torture, Angel still sees through the monster and sees Buffy -But can we trust him yet? -The power of love pulled him through years of trauma -In the spinoff- What is Angel without Buffy -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Listener Feedback: -Buffy is making us feel things with the relationships on the show -Does Buffy like to play the victim? -The newbies are good at predicting things? Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3 episode 1, “Anne" and episode 2 "Dead Man's Party". Superfans: Karen and Caitlin Newbies: Kristen and Mitch Fun Facts: Karen is broadcasting from her brand new apartment sans chair. Mitch is surviving the blizzard in Denver, and is staying warm while watching Buffy. Caitlin is enjoying the sunny 73 degree weather near her, and she marathoned Outlander and is currently obsessed. Kristen is super excited that she got to see Captain America: Civil War this past week (so did Karen). Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 1, "Anne": -Synopsis -Season 3 credits: What do we think of the new stuff? -Buffy is a show that likes to reference back to older storylines. -Buffy and Angel on the beach. Mitch declares it "The Beach" part two. -This episode had a distinct "When She Was Bad" vibe. -Would Buffy have returned to Sunnydale if Lily hadn't showed up? -Chanterelle/Lily is back. Did we have a serious reaction to her return? -We're fine with the whole Monster of the Week thing continuing. They serve a purpose. -These alien guys weren't explained, but it's not really necessary to know much about them to enjoy the episode. -Karen gives us a Charmed/Buffy connection -Does the show go to the "Buffy is just a normal teenager" well too often? -Ken was up to no good and some of us suspected him from the beginning. -Willow taking on Buffy's quippy one-liners is epic. -The totally failed slaying was pretty equally enjoyed by all of us. -Giles was on the hunt for Buffy. Do we think he should have been searching for her? Or should he have taken a cue from the Scooby gang and wait for Buffy to just come home? -Joyce blames Giles for Buffy leaving. Wait, what? -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3, episode 2, "Dead Man's Party": -Synopsis -Let's talk about Joyce. -Hopefully Joyce and Buffy can get back to some common ground. -Should Willow be upset with Buffy for leaving? Do we feel like her feelings are justified? -Zombies!! We were all a little unnerved that one of them just snapped a kid's neck. -This Monster of the Week could have been a little stronger, and Caitlin has an ingenious way they could have done it. -Pat (aka Martha Stewart) goes full demon and has quite the withering stare. -Willow is dabbling in some witchcraft.
