Suffer the Little Children

Last week, I told you the first part of the story of seven-year-old Shellay Ward, who was found dead in her family’s home in Hawks Nest, New South Wales, Australia on November 3, 2007, emaciated, lying on a bare mattress in a filthy room filled with human waste. Shellay, who was autistic and had never attended school, spent her final months imprisoned in her dark, filthy bedroom. She is largely known across Australia by her middle name, Ebony, the girl who suffered the country’s worst child neglect death.In this episode, I will tell you the rest of Shellay’s story, including the arrest and trial of her parents and the results of multiple investigations into the catastrophic systemic failure of multiple government agencies responsible for protecting Australia’s most vulnerable children. On November 3, 2007, first responders to a home in Hawks Nest, New South Wales, Australia were shocked and horrified by what they found. On a mattress in a feces-covered bedroom with a boarded-over window lay the twisted, emaciated form of 7-year-old Shellay Ward, who had been deprived of food, water, sunlight, medical attention, and basic human decency for months, if not years. In episode 35, I told you the story of Jacob Landin: a beautiful, happy nine-month-old boy, bursting with life and personality, whose death from blunt force trauma to the head has been unresolved for over 33 years. Despite investigators zeroing in on a single suspect, the case, which over the years saw a periodic resurgence in police interest, has gone officially unsolved, and the man believed to have caused Jacob’s death has gone unpunished.For episode 36, originally released in November of 2020, I had the honor of speaking with Jacob’s older brother, Eric Carter-Landin. Little Judah Morgan spent almost the entirety of his four years in the loving, stable foster home of his second-cousin, Jenna Hullett, and her family. When Indiana DCS essentially forgot to terminate the rights of his biological parents, Judah was returned to the custody of his mother, Mary Yoder, and his father, Alan Morgan. Six months later, Judah was dead.This is the story of a joyful, jubilant little boy with warm brown eyes, curly blond hair, and adorably pinchable cheeks who loved singing and dancing, learning, and especially spending time with the family who loved him. It’s also the story of yet another child protection agency yet again failing a child with fatal and undeniably preventable results.
