A New Way to Control Your Blood Sugar – BiOptimizers with Dave Asprey : 807
Great PodMonitoring your blood sugar is one of the most important interventions you can make for yourself in order to live long and truly feel good. If you have diabetes, your cardiovascular disease risk, your cancer risk and your Alzheimer's risk all go up dramatically. So, what if we were to just put on our thinking hats as biohackers and say, "Which intervention has the highest ROI for reducing my odds of dying from everything?" Regulating your blood sugar would be very, very high on the list, probably more important than exercise, even though exercise can be a method of controlling your blood sugar and exercise and movement are important, no doubt about it. If you didn't move around and your blood sugar was highly regulated, you'd be better off than if you had irregular blood sugar and you moved around. It's that big of a deal.In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Wade Lightheart and Matt Gallant are back on the show. This time, they’re letting you know how to get control of your blood sugar spikes and drops, and instead find a stable middle ground. These two BiOptimizers cofounders have decades of combined experience in health, nutrition and exercise. They really get how the brain and body work together for maximum performance and realize so much of that has to do with our blood sugar. “Our pancreases are both four and a half times the size per body weight of any species on the planet because we eat so much sugar,” Matt says. “That's what involved in the regulation and distribution of insulin.”If you don’t manage your blood sugar, there will be consequences. But when you find a way to maintain stable glucose levels, your body learns how to convert glucose into energy more effectively. This leads to better performance. Your body repairs and you have more energy for thinking and moving. We talk about ketones, carbs and how to keep your blood sugar at a consistent level (even when you have those days where you eat a 4,000 calorie meal). You’ll also learn how you can best collect data on what works for your body and how the active ingredients work in BiOptimizer’s Blood Sugar Breakthrough supplement. “As great as our product is and it's really awesome, I want to also caution people,” Wade says. “You can't supplement your way out of a bad diet, and you want to take data, and you want to correlate it with biofeedback.”Enjoy! How Fitness Saved a Life and Became a Livelihood – Doug Bopst with Dave Asprey : 806
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio my guest shares an inspiring life story about addiction, adversity and resilience.Doug Bopst is an award-winning personal trainer, author, speaker and host of the Adversity Advantage podcast. His journey traverses a difficult childhood, an addiction spiral and time in jail.He credits a judge, a cell mate, and unexpectedly finding faith with 12 years of sobriety and his ability to help others change and reclaim their own lives. His transformation started with fitness in jail to help him recover from drug addiction. Exercise changed his body, his state of mind and his ability to continuously show up for himself. “I was finally able to get comfortable being uncomfortable,” Doug says. “I was finally able to face my fears and face my emotions, really, head on, and learn to channel a lot of that pain into something good.”Post-jail time, he found new ways to manage his emotions. Where before he would have used drugs to respond to negative thoughts and feelings, he began relying on exercise, which built up his self-confidence.“When I was working out, it wasn't necessarily as much to get in shape as it was for me to relearn how to deal with my emotions in a way that was conducive to who I wanted to become,” Doug says.Doug also shares how his self-support system developed over time, and the importance of a full healthy lifestyle, not just a good fitness routine. For him, feeling good isn’t just about exercise, but a network of family, faith, therapy, meditation and eating right. He encourages the people that he trains to find their own version of a full, healthy life. No one thing can be a solution, but instead it’s all a part of journey of self-forgiveness, healing and finding the things that feel good for you.“A lot of this stuff that I've been doing is simply to help people, give people hope, whether that's somebody who's struggling with addiction, whether that's a parent, whether that's somebody who's just struggling to feel better about themselves,” Doug says. “That's my main mission right now.”Enjoy! Self-Heal with Intermittent Fasting & Inner Bonding – Margaret Paul, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 805
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we find out how my guest, 81-year-old Margaret Paul, Ph.D., has sustained intermittent fasting (IF) for more than 50 years!Although IF may be a newer concept with regard to health and wellness, research has been happening for decades. And some people have been following IF for that long because it works for their own biology.“I started intermittent fasting when I was about 30,” Margaret says. “And it's been fantastic in my life. I started learning about food in my early 20s, because I was a sickly kid, and I just didn't want to be sick. … I'm grateful that I found out about intermittent fasting before it was even a word. I mean, they didn't call it that then, but that's what it was.”She was ahead of her time with fasting and also with the inner emotional, mental and spiritual work that rounds out a healthy life. She’s a bestselling author and popular MindBodyGreen writer. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology, is a relationship expert, public speaker, consultant and artist. Her latest book is “Diet For Divine Connection: Beyond Junk Foods and Junk Thoughts to At-Will Spiritual Connection.”“My brain is very sharp. I've worked probably at this point 60 hours a week. I'm highly creative,” she says. “I love my work. I've been doing it for a very long time, and I have no desire to slow down.”Margaret co-created the powerful Inner Bonding® self-healing, six-step process. This program guides people through finding and defining their own inner worth. It allows you to let go of your wounded-ego voice that tells you you’ll never be good enough and instead operate from a higher connection of love and truth. “If you don't know how to love yourself, you don't get filled up with love, you don't have anything to share,” Margaret says. “So, you're always trying to get it. Get the love, get the approval, get the attention. Inner Bonding® is about teaching you how to do that for yourself, so that you can share that with others.” Margaret talks about ways people abandon themselves on an emotional level, like staying in their head and disconnecting from their body, judging themselves, blaming others and numbing out with addictions. During this episode, she shares how you can move beyond these patterns, access your internal higher guidance, and maintain a level of higher frequency with inputs like healthy organic foods and the practice of self-love. Insulin Resistance, Fasting, Ketones and “Why We Get Sick” – Dr. Ben Bikman with Dave Asprey : 804
This episode of Bulletproof Radio runs over 90 minutes and definitely will be worth the time you’ll spend listening. We’re talking about insulin resistance, something that affects half of all adults in the U.S., a lot of our children, and is the leading cause of many common health disorders. Insulin resistance makes you less powerful every day until you get diabetes. Insulin resistance has been a focus for me for more than 10 years. It's part of the Bulletproof Diet and it's part of my book “Fast This Way.” In fact, fasting is very impactful for this. And I've asked Ben Bikman, Ph.D., a biomedical scientist and pathophysiology professor at Brigham Young University, on the show to talk about why insulin resistance is happening. Ben’s research focuses on the role of elevated insulin in regulating obesity and diabetes, including the relevance of ketones in mitochondrial function. “Insulin resistance itself will start to affect the degree to which the mitochondria work,” he says. However, when in balance, insulin is really important to our bodies. “We [speak] about insulin and its role as being a villain, but it's also very much a hero,” Ben says. “It is absolutely essential to survival.”Why is insulin important? It controls blood glucoseEvery cell has insulin receptors, and insulin tells the cell what to do with energy: when to grow, shrink, build or break.Ben brings new insights into what’s going on with insulin resistance and why we must pay attention to it. He synthesizes the latest research and information in his book, “Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease―and How to Fight It.” Due to elevated insulin, elevated stress hormones (cortisol and epinephrine) and inflammation, our bodies can become insulin resistant. Most of the population is insulin resistant and are hyper-insulinemic. This means they have metabolic inflexibility and get stuck in sugar-burning mode and never shift to burning fat, making it nearly impossible to burn or lose weight.“If you are among the majority of people whose brain is yoked to glucose, because your insulin is always high, your glucose is always high, your brain is adapted to only using glucose, and you feel that drop in glucose,” Ben explains. “You will feel the symptoms of hypoglycemia, that carb crash, you will get jittery, you'll get shaky, you'll get anxious, you'll get hungry again even though you just ate 90 minutes ago.”“It's because your brain is so addicted to glucose,” he continues, “that when it starts to drop and in the absence of ketones, which aren't there in that situation, you have no alternative.”Listen on to find out how continuous glucose monitoring can allow you to get a better of sense of your body and what you need to be eating. Ben also gives tips on the best things to eat, how to cook (or what to cook with), fasting (of course) and other ways to protect your body from disease and sickness. This episode will absolutely change your understanding of insulin resistance.Enjoy! How to Identify Your Energy Blockers and Beat Fatigue – Dr. Steven Gundry with Dave Asprey : 803
At 70 years young, Dr. Steven Gundry feels and exudes more energy than he did at 40. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’ll talk about how you can make sure you feel the same.Dr. Gundry explains seven deadly energy disruptors that surround us in his new book, “The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone.”“The walking well have become proficient at shouldering a pretty heavy pack of fatigue,” he says in his book. “And it’s taking a toll on multiple fronts—from their personal contentment and fulfilment, to their ability to show up fully in relationships, to their ability to work.”Things like glyphosate, fructose and environmental pollutants often lead to a leaky gut, mitochondrial gridlock and an epidemic of fatigue. That means greater inflammation and less energy from the places we need it most, like our brain and muscles. “We literally are overfed and underpowered,” Dr. Gundry says. “We've been told, and you see it on commercials every day, that you need this energy drink or you need a 30-gram protein drink to get your energy up to take on the day. They literally clog the fuel line and that's our big paradox. We go into these energy disruptors in our conversation that covers the “epidemic” of fatigue and low energy that we often take as a given in our busy day-to-day lives. Today’s episode will give you actionable tips on how to get some of that energy back into your life. “We think that this is something because of our stressful existence or our hard work is just something underlying that we have to deal with or overcome,” Dr. Gundry says. “And it's absolutely not the case at all.”As a practicing cardiologist and retired cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Gundry has become a major voice in the world of food toxins and what they do to us. He teaches people how to eat, guiding them on how to get ahead of the problem, not just fixing it after the fact. He’s published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals on using diet and supplements to eliminate heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disease, and multiple other diseases. He’s also the best-selling author of “The Plant Paradox” and “The Longevity Paradox” books. Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Why Dave Asprey Changed His Mind About Juicing – Junaid Kalmadi of Farmers Juice : 802
For a while I was anti-juicing because I found myself consuming a lot of sugar with very few health benefits. But I wanted to flip my own script and introduce you to a brand-new juice company. These juices don’t cause a blood sugar spike. Instead, you get a lot of phytonutrients and the bonus opportunity to support small farmers. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking about juicing with Farmers Juice founder and CEO Junaid Kalmadi. Farmers Juice is the world’s first keto-friendly and functional green juice line with adaptogens, antioxidants and mushrooms. These ingredients boost focus, increase athletic performance, and create a sense of calm.Farmers Juice juices contain no GMOs, artificial colors/preservatives, synthetic fertilizers or toxic persistent pesticides.“Cold-pressed juicing takes one to 1.5 pounds of produce and it separates the liquid from the solid and the juice from the pulp,” Junaid says. “It creates this really concentrated and potent beverage that has all sorts of nutrients of roughly three to five plates of salad in one drink.”And thanks to high pressure processing, Farmers Juice retains all the ingredient goodness. Another bonus that the juices stay fresh for 20 days. Most juice companies use sugar-based ingredients. Instead, Farmers Juice uses a mint, basil, lime, lemon, turmeric, and ginger combination. This gives your tastebuds a tingle every time you drink it and contains only four to five grams of sugar per juice bottle.“I think juice companies selling sugary drinks, even though they have good intentions, contribute to the health care burden of 240 million Americans being overweight or obese and nearly 125 million Americans that are diabetic or prediabetic,” Junaid says. “Juice does not need to be part of the problem; it can be part of the solution.”In addition to supporting human health, Farmers Juice also prioritizes decreasing food waste by partnering up with Alliance of Family Farms to get the “ugly produce” that often gets thrown away. Then, they donate their extra pulp to local farmers for cattle feed. All of their produce comes from small farmers in California.Farmers Juice is good for you, local farmers and the planet. That’s something I can get behind.Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? The Metabolism-Cancer Connection & How to Treat It – Dr. Charles Meakin with Dave Asprey : 801
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest approaches cancer much differently than mainstream medical thinking.Dr. Charles Meakin is Chief Medical Officer for Care Oncology Clinic USA and works specifically on metabolic treatment strategies for curing cancer. He’s also a career biohacker-physician focused on alternative and holistic treatment strategies that he hopes will shape the “fourth field of cancer care.”We talk personalized strategies and specifically about some of the drugs we take for anti-aging that are interesting for cancer care, including stuff that is a little bit shocking to me like statins. We're going to get into that, and if you're interested in metabolism, this show is for you.“Cancer hits one in two men, four in 10 women, and we spend a lot of money on it,” Dr. Meakin says. “And it's still not fixing it.”We’re learning more every day about how cancer manifests and acts in the body. Over the last 10 years, many of the same cancer screening recommendations remain intact, but a lot has changed, such as:Cancer is gradually catching up with cardiovascular disease as the primary cause of death in AmericaThe emergence of obesity as the second most common risk factor for cancerThe increased prevalence of some diseases means many more will experience cancer (1/3 women, 1/2 men)The emergence of HPV virus as a trigger for oral pharyngeal cancer is escalating Dr. Meakin brings holistic alternatives to the normal standard of care: simple balance training programs, nutrition strategies, supplements additive, portable 02, exercise bands, sleep hacks, and more. His options not only improve treatment outcomes for patients, but helps other health conditions in an accessible, inexpensive and safe way. “Our ultimate goal is a paradigm shift to not just let cancer develop, and then try to jump on it in our current ways once it's done, but to work in a better way with prevention and earlier identification,” he explains.Dr. Meakin and I explore the ways we view and treat cancer has changed over time, and how far it still has to go. You’ll learn about developments in oncology like targeted immune therapies, and a new belief called Epigenetic Theory. He doesn’t shy away from hard questions, and that’s what makes this such a great episode.Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast?
