About hawker centres

When I came to Singapore, there is a place I often go to.

That place is a hawker centre.

There are many people at hawker centres.

There are many people both during the day and at night.

It is lively.

Many food stalls are lined up.

You can smell food from many different places.

Just walking around makes me feel hungry.

when they go to a hawker centre for the first time,

ordering food feels difficult.

You don’t know where to line up.

You are not sure what to choose.

And not only that,

The uncles and aunties at shops

sometimes speak languages other than English.

And they speak fast, so it is surprising the first time.

I was the same at first.

I was very nervous.

Also,

when you order slowly,

you make the people behind you wait.

So you feel nervous again.

Oh, right.

Finding a seat first is also difficult.

At popular hawker centres,

it is hard to find a seat.

You stand behind a table

and wait for people to finish eating.

The people who are eating

probably feel some pressure.

But maybe because it is normal,

both the people eating

and the people waiting

do not seem to mind very much.

In Japan, I think people do not really do this.

This is a cultural difference.

When I look at the food of the person next to me,

I always think, “That looks delicious.”

次は、

Next time,

I want to try that.

Some people come alone.

Some people come with friends.

Some people come with their family.

It feels like a relaxed place to eat.

Someday,

I would like to share

my favourite stalls with all of you.
