The State of Women in Hip Hop: Current Icons, Industry Games & Missed Opportunities (Ep.28)

The State of Women in Hip Hop: Current Icons, Industry Games & Missed Opportunities (Ep.28)

Happy Pride Month, Popholics! 🌈✨ This week on The Weekly Wind Down, Jer takes a step back to celebrate the women who have been carrying playlists, timelines, and entire cultural conversations on their backs while asking one important question: where is women in rap headed next?

From the pioneers who built the blueprint to the fearless new generation kicking down doors, this episode explores the current state of women in hip hop through the lens of artistry, individuality, longevity, and community.

Jer breaks down why this current class of rappers feels more confident and liberated than ever before, spotlighting rising names like Monaleo, Maiya The Don, Lola Brooke, Ice Spice, and Trim while discussing why authenticity and identity matter more than following trends. As the barriers to entry continue shrinking, the challenge is no longer getting noticed. The challenge is creating something that people will still care about fifteen years from now.

The conversation also dives into one of the biggest obstacles many women in rap continue to face: the influence of male dominated industry structures. From label politics to manufactured rivalries and unnecessary drama, Jer explores why collaboration and collective power could open doors that competition alone never will.

Of course, flowers are given where flowers are due. We celebrate artists who are carving out unique lanes and building lasting careers including Doechii, Doja Cat, Young Miko, Syd, Rico Nasty, Baby Tate, Coi Leray, and more. These are artists pushing beyond the expectations of what a rapper can be while refusing to box themselves into one lane.

And because every family meeting needs accountability, Jer also gets into the artists who may need to evolve, experiment, or rethink their long term strategy if they want to remain relevant in an industry that moves at lightning speed.

Funny, passionate, occasionally shady, and ultimately rooted in love

for the culture, this episode is a reminder that legacy is built through individuality, consistency, and community. The girls have the talent. The girls have the audience. The girls have the power. Now imagine what could happen if they moved together. Press play and let's talk about it.
