The Duggars Did What The Siders Did — In Public

For anyone who has followed this family since Nineteen Kids and Counting, the hardest part of this episode is how familiar the Siders case looks. A different family, a different state, no cameras — and the same machine running underneath.

Joseph Duggar has pleaded not guilty to two felonies in Florida involving a child under twelve, tied to a 2020 family trip to Panama City Beach. He posted a six hundred thousand dollar bond. He and Kendra Duggar have also pleaded not guilty to four counts each of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts each of false imprisonment in Tontitown, and the state removed all four of their children.

Tony Brueski holds all of it up against the Siders family in Vinton County, Ohio — sixteen children, sixteen felony counts per defendant, a mother who was fifteen and seven months pregnant on her wedding day, and an eighteen-year-old who cannot spell her own name. All four Siders have pleaded not guilty.

The machinery will look familiar. Homeschooling with no outside eyes. Problems handled inside the house. The 2003 stern talk with a family friend in a state trooper's uniform — a mandated reporter who filed nothing and is now serving fifty-six years on charges of his own, more than four times what Josh Duggar received.

Then the difference that only one of these families can afford. One grandfather walked out of an Ohio jail because the county could not cover his hospital bills. The other wrote a six hundred thousand dollar check.

Two families ran the identical play. Only one of them did it on television. Only one of them could afford the lawyer.
