At least 180 killed and more than 1,300 missing after Nepal-Tibet floods

At least 273 individuals have been confirmed deceased, with over 1,300 still unaccounted for following a catastrophic glacial collapse that triggered severe flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border.

This disaster, which occurred early Wednesday, released a tremendous surge of water, mud, ice, and boulders that devastated Himalayan communities and river systems.
The rapidly advancing wall of mud and debris—characterized by environmental historians as an "inland tsunami"—traveled nearly 170 kilometers (100 miles) southward, destroying homes, roads, bridges, and essential hydropower infrastructure across seven districts in Nepal.


The death toll continues to escalate as search and rescue teams access remote valleys:
Nepal: Local police have reported at least 270 fatalities, with more than 820 individuals still missing. Among those unaccounted for are over 500 foreign nationals from countries such as the United States, India, Australia, Britain, Canada, and Singapore. Many were trekking in the area or engaged in a pilgrimage to Tibet's revered Mount Kailash.
Tibet (China): Chinese officials have confirmed 3 fatalities and 558 individuals missing, including 260 foreigners. A significant mudslide near the Gyirong Port border crossing has resulted in debris accumulation of up to 2 meters deep, entirely severing road access.

The Nepalese Army has initiated extensive helicopter operations to airlift survivors and stranded tourists to Kathmandu. Concurrently, China has dispatched hundreds of emergency personnel, sniffer dogs, and speedboats to the Gyirong county area. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is actively sending emergency supplies to assist over 1,200 displaced villagers.
Researchers, along with the US Geological Survey, have verified that the disaster was triggered by a significant collapse of glacial ice and rock, rather than an earthquake. Specialists caution that climate change is hastening the melting of glaciers and destabilizing the ice system in the Himalayas, leading to the Lhende Khola river network experiencing two floods within a mere 14 months. Flood alerts for downstream areas continue to be in place for the densely populated northern Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
