Charlie Adelson's Girlfriend Did WHAT With The Money?

FSU law professor Dan Markel won a custody battle that kept his two sons in Tallahassee, over his ex-wife's family's objections. Prosecutors say that ruling triggered a plan: Donna Adelson, the boys' grandmother, allegedly offered Markel a million dollars to reverse it. When he refused, two men drove five hours from Miami in a rented Prius and shot him twice in the head in his own garage, the same morning he'd dropped his sons at preschool. He was 41 years old. Investigators followed the money to a family dental office near Fort Lauderdale — 44 checks signed by Donna, $138,000 routed through a woman with no job there, and a toll transponder receipt tracking the killers' entire drive. The practice belonged to Charlie Adelson, Donna's son and a Fort Lauderdale periodontist pulling in three million a year. Prosecutors say Charlie orchestrated the murder of his former brother-in-law and paid for it through his own office, with his mother signing the checks and washing the cash. At trial, Charlie claimed he was the one being extorted — that the hitmen threatened him after the fact and he paid them off in monthly installments to survive. The prosecutor asked why an extortionist would send the victim's own girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, to pick up the money. The jury deliberated three hours before convicting him. Five people are now behind bars, and Charlie's July 2026 appeal was denied after his attorney filed the wrong motion.
