The Wave of Ease: A Tuesday Morning Softening Practice

The Wave of Ease: A Tuesday Morning Softening Practice

Hey there, I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here. You know, Tuesday mornings in September have this particular flavor of overwhelm, don't they? That sense that the week is already running away from you before you've even had your coffee. So today, we're going to do something really simple together. We're going to practice what I call "softening," and I promise it's going to feel like a warm exhale. Let's start by getting comfortable wherever you are right now. You don't need to sit in any special position. Feet on the ground, or cross-legged, or even lying down if that's what your body needs. Just find a place where you feel supported. Take a moment and notice what's around you. Maybe there's light coming through a window, or the gentle hum of the world happening outside. You're safe here, and you have permission to just be. Now, let's anchor ourselves with the breath. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, and as you exhale through your mouth, make it audible. Like you're fogging up a mirror. Let's do that three times together. In through the nose, one, two, three, four. And out through the mouth with that gentle sound. Beautiful. Again. And one more time. Here's our practice, and it's called the "wave of ease." I want you to imagine your body is like the surface of a still pond. Starting at the top of your head, imagine a wave of warmth and heaviness moving downward, like honey dripping slowly down through your body. This wave carries with it permission to let go of anything you're gripping, holding, or controlling. As it reaches your forehead, feel that space soften. Your eyes can rest. Your jaw can unclench. The wave moves down through your shoulders, that place where so many of us store our to-do lists and our worries. Let them fall away. Just for these next few minutes, they don't need you. Move the wave down through your chest, your belly, feeling your ribs expand and settle with each breath. All the way down through your hips, your thighs, your legs, all the way to your toes. Your whole body is now heavy, soft, and held. Stay here for a moment. Let your breath move naturally, like waves meeting the shore. There's nothing to do, nowhere to be. As we close, bring your awareness gently back to the room. Maybe wiggle your fingers and toes. When you move through your day, carry this softness with you. You don't have to be tight and controlled. Your ease is always available. Thank you so much for spending this time with me on Relaxation. Please subscribe so we can practice together again soon. You've got this.
