Caleb Flynn's Staged Scene and the Towel Over Ashley

Three details from the crime scene testimony reportedly tell investigators more than any single piece of forensic evidence could. A towel placed over Ashley Flynn's head. A front door that was unlocked despite alleged signs of forced entry. And a husband who was outside the house with his dogs when police arrived, instead of at his wife's side.

Tony and Robin Dreeke break down each of those details through the lens of behavioral analysis. Robin starts with the towel. In his experience, when a victim is found with their face covered, investigators immediately narrow their focus. Covering the face is reportedly one of the most reliable indicators that the killer had a personal relationship with the victim. It suggests guilt, shame, or an inability to confront the physical reality of what was done. Strangers almost never do this.

The alleged staged break-in is next. Prosecutors told the jury that the damage to the front door was caused by multiple tools and did not match any known pattern of forced entry. The door itself was unlocked. Robin explains why staging a break-in is one of the most common -- and most commonly botched -- elements of a domestic murder cover-up. The instinct to overdo it, to make the scene look more dramatic and more convincing, reportedly creates the exact inconsistencies that trained investigators are looking for.

Then Robin turns to Caleb's behavior in the minutes immediately after the 911 call. When the first officer arrived, Caleb had left the house and was standing outside with the family dogs. Robin examines the priority set embedded in that decision. In a genuine crisis, a spouse's instinct is almost always to stay with the victim, to attempt aid, to be as close as possible to the person they love. Going outside to secure the pets suggests a different set of priorities -- the priorities of someone who may have allegedly already known that there was nothing left to save.
