Junior Burdynski Vanished in 1993 — a Child Knows What Happened

Junior Burdynski was ten years old, four feet tall, and riding a red-and-white Schwinn when he disappeared from Brentwood, Maryland, on May 24, 1993. His family searched. Law enforcement brought dogs, helicopters, FBI agents going door-to-door. A local Domino’s Pizza glued his face onto every delivery box. The only trace recovered was a bicycle rim found three blocks from home near a tennis court.

The search for Junior uncovered something investigators weren’t looking for — a ring of offenders who had allegedly been harming neighborhood children for twenty-five years. Three men were convicted, including Joseph Lynch, who lived blocks away on Varnum Street. But investigators said they could not connect any of them to Junior’s disappearance.

Thirty-three years later, a separate investigation changed that. In 2026, police charged Lynch with new offenses against two teenagers between 2007 and 2014. That inquiry led detectives to a previously unknown witness — a man, now in his mid-forties, who had been thirteen years old and living in Brentwood when Junior vanished. According to police, the man told detectives he was in a home with Junior and Lynch that day, that Lynch directed what happened, and that Junior died from the injuries.

On September 17, 2026, Lynch was charged with second-degree murder and multiple offenses involving a minor. His bond was denied. He is the only person charged. The witness is cooperating and was not charged — prosecutors cited his age and his status as a child under Lynch’s alleged control.

Junior’s remains have never been recovered. Authorities have not said whether physical evidence supports the witness account. Police believe there are more victims and are asking anyone with information to call 301-772-4930.

Junior’s sister Virginia was six when he disappeared. She addressed him at the press conference: she said she was sorry, and that thirty-three years of hope ended in heartbreak.
