Delphi's Judge Excluded Everything. What She Did After the Verdict Says It All.

Delphi's Judge Excluded Everything. What She Did After the Verdict Says It All.

On September 21, 2026, the Delphi case reached the Indiana Court of Appeals when three judges heard oral arguments in the case of Richard Allen — the man convicted of killing Abby Williams and Libby German and sentenced to a hundred and thirty years.

Defense attorney Mark Leeman told the court that for the first time in modern history, the state took a pretrial detainee directly to solitary confinement and kept him there until he descended into psychosis. The prosecution's Ellen Meilaender countered that Allen confessed more than sixty times and identified himself as Bridge Guy.

Then Judge Elaine Brown said something the state of Indiana will carry into every brief it files from here forward. Five words directed at the prosecution: "You protected him into psychosis."

The oral arguments are the last act in a pattern that runs the length of this case. A recording system that erased early interviews. A tip that sat in a drawer for five years. A catfish account that went unannounced for four. A hundred-and-thirty-six-page defense filing naming men with alleged confessions, crime scene ties, and dried blood on a car — all excluded by the trial judge.

The prosecution's case at trial rested on a single unspent bullet, Allen's own statement that he was on the trail, and the confessions of a man who had spent thirteen months in solitary, lost nearly fifty pounds, and been diagnosed with psychotic disorder by the prison's own psychologist.

And the judge who made every ruling that shaped the trial — Judge Frances Gull — made one final decision after the verdict that this episode examines.

The appeal is built on three grounds: an allegedly unconstitutional search warrant, allegedly coerced confessions, and the exclusion of alternative-suspect evidence.
