Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, Part 3 - Shoelace Around an Inmate's Neck

Patricia Jones weighed 217 pounds, twice Christa Pike's size by Pike's own estimate, and she was unconscious on the floor of a recreation cage at the Tennessee Prison for Women within minutes of a fire alarm on August 24, 2001. Pike had carried a boot lace out of her cell when the alarm went off. A sergeant who talked to her afterward said she was proud, unremorseful, and sure thirty more seconds would have done it. Six days later she said the same thing to her mother on a recorded line and called it premeditated. Chapter three of Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, the Hidden Killers documentary on the Colleen Slemmer murder, is the record she built after a jury sentenced her to death.

The sentence came on March 30, 1996. She was twenty, the second woman in Tennessee to get one, and she cried and asked the judge if she could hug her mother before she went. She wasn't allowed to. The same day she wrote Tadaryl Shipp a letter about having ten months to live, and she signed it Little devil. Shipp, tried the next year, got life with the possibility of parole; a parole board turned him down in October 2025 and set his next hearing for 2031.

At her 2004 trial for the attack on Jones, Pike's story changed: she'd only meant to protect another inmate. On cross she admitted she kept choking Jones after Jones was unconscious. The jury gave her twenty-five years. In 2026 her clemency petition described a mentally ill 18-year-old kid, and Governor Bill Lee denied it two days before the state tried, and failed, to execute her. Tony closes with the mother who drove up from Florida, and with the piece of her daughter she says she's still owed.
