#22 - How Old is Too Old?

#22 - How Old is Too Old?

Does rock 'n' roll have an expiration date? When does an artist outstay his or her welcome? Are there bands that should have hung it up a few years earlier? Should Grace Slick really have retired from music at 50? Are holograms and avatars the path to the future of performance? Anthony, Rob and Alan delve into these and more burning questions in "How Old is Too Old?" But first, we reveal some of what we've been listening to this week and pay tribute to some fallen heroes (Alan White, Andy Fletcher, and Cathal Coughlin).

Do you know an artist or band that has outlived their usefulness, or one that's still going just as strong as ever? Let us know! Email us at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or leave us a comment wherever you're listening!

#118 - PURPLE RAIN at 40

Continuing our examination of the music of 1984, we took a little time to celebrate one of the most important albums of that year: Purple Rain by Prince. We're joined by a good friend of ours, Jason de la Torre, a very knowledgeable Prince fan, to talk about this landmark album. Our discussion ranges from how we first came to know this album and when we first saw the film, to the album's legacy and our favorite Prince concert experiences. We talk about our favorite songs, and the 2017 expanded reissue as well.  What's your opinion of Purple Rain? What's your favorite song(s)? When did you first see the film? #116 - The Albums of 1984 Pt 1: Hard Rock and Metal

1984 was an incredible year for music, and it was a particularly strong year for hard rock and metal. We're joined by guests Courtland Lewis and Matt Alschbach of the Rock and Metal Profs Podcast for a great discussion of what factors made 1984 such a highwater mark for the genre, and we review some of our favorite releases of the year. We spotlight albums by Van Halen, KISS, Dio, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Queenryche, Ratt, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, plus a whole lot more. And of course no discussion of the metal releases of 1984 would be complete without a mention of the soundtrack to the classic film This is Spinal Tap! And because we love you and want to make your life easier, we made a playlist of (almost) all the music discussed in this episode. You can find that on Spotify here:  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0nPsWwDHyjm2nxDhTSsZcY?si=144e22a6523a4519 Did you enjoy this episode? Do you have a favorite rock or metal release from 1984? #115 - Filmmaker OLIVIA SERAFINI-SAULI

Filmmaker Olivia Serafini-Sauli hung around the New York music scene in the 90s, and she always had her camera at the ready. So when her friends in the band The New Rising Sons were on the verge of having all their dreams come true, she was there to chronicle it. However, in spite of sold out shows, a major label record deal, and a debut album recorded at a legendary studio, the band's dream came to a sudden end.  Now, 30 years later, the debut NRS album has finally been released on Arctic Rodeo Recordings, and Olivia has taken all of her archival footage plus brand new interviews with band members, producers, record execs, and our very own Stephanie Seymour (who was a friend of the band and worked at Virgin Records when they were signed) to tell the complete story of the New Rising Sons.  Learn more about the film, the band, and the band's music here: https://www.via73films.com/ https://arcticrodeorecordings.com/?page_id=4471 Did you enjoy this episode? Jeff Slate and Earl Slick first met over 15 years ago. In that time they have performed and recorded together many times. Jeff is a guitarist, producer, frontman, journalist, regular guest host on SiriusXM. and ASCAP songwriter.
