Listener Q&A:

As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Audio Question from John: He just finished a sprint triathlon. He's been swimming all winter and spring but had a panic attack in the water during the race. Hung on to a canoe for the first time in his life. How can he avoid this in the future? How can he calm his mind during the swim.

Audio Question from Terri: She has bowel/bathroom issues during her morning training runs. She eats breakfast, goes to bathroom, walks dogs, goes to the bathroom again, and then again a few more times during the run. She does not have this problem during afternoon and evening runs.

~ In my response to Terri, I mention CapraCleanse and the Squatty Potty.

Audio Question from Abe (sorry... I mean Dave): He has an "Endurance Weekend" race coming up: 5k run on Friday, sprint triathlon Saturday morning, followed by 15 mile time trial. Then after a 3 to 4 hour break, there is a 25 mile road race. On Sunday morning there is a "crit". What would you do training, fueling and recovery for the week of the race?

~ Here is my magnesium oil.

Audio Question from John: John is considering running the ING New York City Marathon. He has run 2 half marathons, goes to gym 4 times a week, and is in good shape (but could lose 5lbs around stomach). Has a slight case of hypermobility syndrome in his knee. After previous half marathons could barely walk for a few days (due to foot pain). He really wants to do a full marathon but doesn't want to break himself.

~ In my response to John, I mention www.marathondominator.com, since it sounds like he's not really doing much weight training.

Greg and Sharon ask: We noticed in one of your videos at home you have a water filtering system. I don't remember the name of it but we looked at it about two years ago and wondered about it (I even contacted the company with my question). When the water is filtered through all of the layers it stays in your container with the filter, right? In other words, you just spent the whole night filtering water, but the filter stays up in the middle of the water after it's filtered. Where did the impurities from the water go?

Scott asks: My daughter is a competitive high school swimmer and also has scoliosis (27% curvature). This has been a great activity for her for the past 12 years and I feel has helped keep her body strong. However, this spring season she has developed a sharp pain on exhaling forcefully or on impact (like diving or pushing off the wall). She has never scratched a race, but now is unable to complete a 100 breaststroke. The pain is localized on her left side (the 'low' side of her spinal curvature) below her scapula in her rhomboid. She's been icing, stretching, using ibuprofen, and electo-stim. Do you have any suggestions on how to rehab the injury and any special considerations for rehab and training given her scoliosis?

~ In my response, I mention the book "Stopping Scoliosis".

Jenell asks: Now, I know this may come off as a weird question, but what is your take on Veggie Straws by Sensible Portions. They seem to be healthy and are all natural with no preservatives but I have my "guard up" so to speak on them because at times what seems healthy for you really isn't. If you could provide your feed back on this it would be greatly appreciated.

~ In my response, I mention my top 5 quick summer fat loss recipes, including kale chips.

Julia asks: I am recovering from a fracture to my tibial plateau and a recently bruised sternum (got a little stupid using a poorly adjusted upright rower @ the gym). Obviously, chest and weight bearing exercise is contraindicated. Do you have any creative exercises to share, particularly ones that can strengthen my lower body in some way.

~ In my response, I mention this article.

Carla asks: I'm very lean, normal BMI/BF% , mother of 3. I exercise 5 x a week (cardio/weights/plyometrics/hiit etc), but after 3 C-sections my abs are not responding and I can't get rid of the excess skin in the lower part of my abs. I am considering a tummy tuck. Is there any other way?

~ In my response to Carla, I mention 14 core exercises for when you're pregnant. I also mention skin firming creams from Green Cupboards.

Gregory says:I weigh 250 lbs and I'm 31 I want to get bigger arms but I want to loose weight, how do I go about doing this without using small weights? I was told that I should just do a bunch of cardio to drop the weight then start lifting. Others have suggested that I do a circuit with a high heart rate, like do some heavy weights then light weights at high rep then some quick cardio. So, how am I supposed to get/maintain some big muscles and trim down to like 225/230?

A Deep Dive Into Ketosis: How Navy Seals, Extreme Athletes & Busy Executives Can Enhance Physical and Mental Performance With The Secret Weapon of Ketone Fuel

A Deep Dive Into Ketosis: How Navy Seals, Extreme Athletes & Busy Executives Can Enhance Physical and Mental Performance With The Secret Weapon of Ketone Fuel

Prepare to have your mind blown as today's audio podcast with Dr. Dominic D' Agostino takes a deep dive into ketosis - showing you how navy seals, extreme athletes and even busy executives can enhance physical and mental performance by using the secret weapon of ketones. During this interview with Dr. D' Agostino, you're going to discover... -Why extreme Navy Seals are using ketosis... -Can you get into ketosis by eating ketones (and still consuming high amounts of carbohydrates) instead of eating a high fat, low carb diet? -How ketosis can be used to control diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers, ALS... -The mechanism by which ketones can "juice up your brain"... -How ketosis can enhance blood vessel dilation and wound healing... -Whether the consumption of ketones is actually safe... -How to improve your oxygen efficiency with ketone intake... -Why ketones can be used to enhance mental performance and not just exercise function... -Practical ways you can use keto salts and ketones to enhance physical performance... -And much more! Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, PhD (pictured right) is an assistant professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He teaches courses in molecular pharmacology and physiology, and maintains involvement in several studies researching metabolic treatments for neurological disorders such as seizures, Alzheimer’s, ALS, and cancer—all of which are metabolically linked. His entry in to this field began when, in 2007, the Office of Naval Research funded his study into seizures related to oxygen toxicity experienced by Navy SEAL divers using closed-circuit breathing apparatus. At this juncture, he came across the ketogenic diet, which has already been confirmed as an effective treatment for epilepsy and a variety of seizure disorders. He is now studying how this same ketogenic diet and the use of ketones can be used to enhance physical and mental performance. The Endurance Pack from Pacific Elite Fitness Oxaloacetate Anti-Aging Supplement BioSteel supplement for amino acids Ben's Minimalist Training Protocol for Ironman Hawaii The "Beyond Training" Book Kelcey Reina What specifically will you do or not do as far as active recovery? Dan Springborn Interested in what the 8-9 hours consisted of especially with the twins. What exercises did you focus in the gym or at home? How much swimming? Sam Nicaise If you are still podcasting - same question from IMC, how did you mentally feel, before, during, and after the race. Mental fog, strength enough to push it, strong enough to keep run technique good, zoning out, ...all that jazz? Bryan McCrystal Im guessing you dont count calories. does this translate to race day?. was your fuel all carb?? was there any fat in your fuel? Peter Bandettini Did you hit a "wall" at any point? I noticed you slowed to 9+ minute pace at about 17 mi. Mike Davis What "under the radar" supplements did you take and what changes to that protocol will/would you adjust? Warren JT Did you cycle in carbs? And was it a window of time or just one meal a week ? Aimee Decaigny Was there any part of your nutrition/training that you feel better served you in Whistler vs Kona, and vice versa? Mike Russell At what level of "base" fitness should we begin minimal training? Or is it appropriate to go couch half/full marathon on minimal? Andrew Jones Some more info about extreme isometrics. I got a lot of chronic injuires/tightness going on... is it a good idea to do something like a 5 minute squat for this? Kurt Man Anthony How much Brick training did you do and how far? And was your brick training just bike/Run. Great job and thanks for all the help you give! Kevin Gossett What changes did you make to pre-race and in-race nutrition from Ironman Canada to Ironman Kona? What changes would you make now, if any, now that you have completed Ironman Kona? Jim Herman Do you think that ole school long training such as the hours put in by Dave Scott and Mark Allen would have put you at the top of your age group or even above, given your obvious physical abilities? Joel Meoak What was the extent of your running and biking lengths? Kate Criswell You recently mentioned on endurance planet a new amino supplement you were going to use. Can you tell us your thoughts on it and is it something you'd take for every workout or just race day. Heidi Ray What are the top ten beginner mistakes during a triathlon? For example, when the man who was in the lead coming out of the water couldn't find his bicycle, the commenator said "beginner's mistake." What are some others? Darren Touchton How did the weekly avg hours break down in weight, swim, bike, and run? (2) Did you bring any one of those to the full distance leading up to Kona? Congrats again! Matthew Ingram Interested in type of strength sessions (heavy strength, high intensity circuit etc.)? Scott Hanley Suggestions on best way to heal a strained calf two weeks out from a 70.3? I have access to a sauna, high elevation river and natural hot springs. Shelley Walton What did your weight training program consist of? How many hours per week did you weight train and how much time did you allocate to each session? Jared Green I'm interested in someday doing a full Ironman, thus far have only done a sprint tri. Should I try doing run only races, like half/full marathons, or open water swims, etc before training for all three at once? Brandon Lawrence On thermogenesis... Since you went from a sauna to a cooler area I would Assume that a bigger temp difference had better effects, say a hot/cold shower vs. a warm/cold shower. Am I correct? Also, what is your reason for using cold adaption as you don't seem to have much fat to lose. Eduardo R. Lorenzana Congrats on Kona!! Will you be putting out a soup to nuts outline of your plan? Week by week, nutrition, exercises, etc? Christopher Allen Congrats on Kona!!! With a change to a high-fat diet, did you have before and after blood work completed to see if there were and positive or negative affects? I ask because I was on statins before and am afraid to go high-fat and have my cholesterol and triglyceride number go up. Kyle Parzich Do you think you could have seen noticeable improvement by adding just 1-2 extra longer sessions a week on top of the minimalist training you did? Also since you raced a late season IM to qualify, do you think you would have performed better at Kona if you qualified at, say IM Texas? Damien Teney Among all of the unconventional training techniques you used, which one do you think had the most (positive) impact on your performance ? Hard to know without repeating the experience many times, but I'm sure you can make some guesses! Kevin Gossett Any ideas or resources for maximizing swim training in an Endless Pool? I don't have the same feeling that I have in a lap pool. Paul Carroll I take it your 8-9 hrs training didn't include weight training? Kevin Gossett How far out from Ironman did you start the sauna/cold thermogenesis? Did you add the sauna because of Kona's hot conditions? I know you're a component of cold thermogenesis but not sure if you regularly include a sauna protocol. I'm assuming most of your training was interval/intensity based. Darcie Gurley What did you eat/drink the day of the race? How did you feel? And are you going to be going ketogenic for your next one? Thomas Howell Your minimalist training methods and hack combos helped you with your under 10hr finish. What do you think you could have changed as far as training and recovery/supps to place higher? Do you feel you would have placed higher with a larger training volume? Ahmad Fahmy What are some of the negatives of a ketogenic diet? Eric LafontaineWhat is the long term effect of such approach? Noticed from your results after canada hormones where a little off.. I can see performance benefit, what about health. The long ride. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. And of course, this week's top iTunes review - gets some BG Fitness swag straight from Ben - leave your review for a chance to win some!   ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick". Testimonial from Rayne @ 00:26:10I had a break through and wanted to say thank you! After listening to your pod cast I was inspired to get my act together. I've been transitioning to a lower carb eating style with increased fats and moderate protein. It's been going well - lost some weight and body fat %. I'm a relatively large guy, 6'2", 230 lbs, with approx 15%bf. But the true trial came this weekend when I ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. it's 48 miles and 11000 feet of climbing. I've been running ultras for a number of years and have always used "hammer nutrition" products and consumed around 2-300 calories per hour. For this run I tried something I had never used before (Cardinal sin, I know) I used Ucan super starch, Vespa and a couple of Nut butter packets. I Felt Amazing the entire way. I began to feel sleepy in the final miles so I busted out some sport jelly beans that I had held in reserve and the glucose and caffeine woke me up and I flew out of the Canyon with a total run time of just over 13 hours. For the entire day I consumed just under 200 grams of carbs and approx 88 calories per hour! I never thought that it was possible. Thanks again for your insight and inspiration. Natural UTI Remedies Craig says @ 00:29:53He has a friend who is in her mid-70s who struggles with Urinary Tract Infections. She has tried all the stuff the docs suggested but they still come back. Do you have any ideas? In my response to Craig, I mention the SexyBack Summit by Christa Orecchio and also the d-Mannose supplement and Uva Ursi herb. How To Detox Your Liver Kristopher says @ 00:35:40 Is currently rather healthy (and an ultra runner) but was a chronic hard drug abuser in the past. He just went through a WellnessFX Performanceblood test and everything looks ok (except for elevated ALT, Liver Enzymes). Is there something specific he should be looking for or at? Is there a cleanse or detox he should use to minimize or heal the damage he has done to himself. In my reply, I mention the following: -Liposomal Glutathione -Chlorella from RecoveryBits (use 10% discount code BEN) -Activated Charcoal -Full Spectrum Antioxidant like Lifeshotz -Capracleanse Can you drink BulletProof Coffee every day? Allie says @ 00:52:12 Do you think it is a good idea to use Bulletproof Coffeeeveryday or should you take a few days off per week and save it for "big days"? Six Ways To Deal With Anxiety Michael says @ 00:58:34What would you recommend for someone with a General Anxiety Disorder and resulting chronic/adrenal fatigue. Proven Ways To Fix Muscle Cramps Christopher says @ 01:13:13He recently lost a lot of weight, started eating paleo and started racing Ironman. Since then he has been getting a lot of cramps in calves, hamstrings and thighs. Not necessarily while training or racing but when he is asleep. If he flexes his calf hard enough he can cause it to cramp whenever he wants. Is there something he could add into his diet to help? Could it be dehydration? In my response to Christopher, I mention the article on muscle cramps and I mention Natural Calm Magnesium. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question.
