Listener Q&A:

As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Audio Question from John: He just finished a sprint triathlon. He's been swimming all winter and spring but had a panic attack in the water during the race. Hung on to a canoe for the first time in his life. How can he avoid this in the future? How can he calm his mind during the swim.

Audio Question from Terri: She has bowel/bathroom issues during her morning training runs. She eats breakfast, goes to bathroom, walks dogs, goes to the bathroom again, and then again a few more times during the run. She does not have this problem during afternoon and evening runs.

~ In my response to Terri, I mention CapraCleanse and the Squatty Potty.

Audio Question from Abe (sorry... I mean Dave): He has an "Endurance Weekend" race coming up: 5k run on Friday, sprint triathlon Saturday morning, followed by 15 mile time trial. Then after a 3 to 4 hour break, there is a 25 mile road race. On Sunday morning there is a "crit". What would you do training, fueling and recovery for the week of the race?

~ Here is my magnesium oil.

Audio Question from John: John is considering running the ING New York City Marathon. He has run 2 half marathons, goes to gym 4 times a week, and is in good shape (but could lose 5lbs around stomach). Has a slight case of hypermobility syndrome in his knee. After previous half marathons could barely walk for a few days (due to foot pain). He really wants to do a full marathon but doesn't want to break himself.

~ In my response to John, I mention www.marathondominator.com, since it sounds like he's not really doing much weight training.

Greg and Sharon ask: We noticed in one of your videos at home you have a water filtering system. I don't remember the name of it but we looked at it about two years ago and wondered about it (I even contacted the company with my question). When the water is filtered through all of the layers it stays in your container with the filter, right? In other words, you just spent the whole night filtering water, but the filter stays up in the middle of the water after it's filtered. Where did the impurities from the water go?

Scott asks: My daughter is a competitive high school swimmer and also has scoliosis (27% curvature). This has been a great activity for her for the past 12 years and I feel has helped keep her body strong. However, this spring season she has developed a sharp pain on exhaling forcefully or on impact (like diving or pushing off the wall). She has never scratched a race, but now is unable to complete a 100 breaststroke. The pain is localized on her left side (the 'low' side of her spinal curvature) below her scapula in her rhomboid. She's been icing, stretching, using ibuprofen, and electo-stim. Do you have any suggestions on how to rehab the injury and any special considerations for rehab and training given her scoliosis?

~ In my response, I mention the book "Stopping Scoliosis".

Jenell asks: Now, I know this may come off as a weird question, but what is your take on Veggie Straws by Sensible Portions. They seem to be healthy and are all natural with no preservatives but I have my "guard up" so to speak on them because at times what seems healthy for you really isn't. If you could provide your feed back on this it would be greatly appreciated.

~ In my response, I mention my top 5 quick summer fat loss recipes, including kale chips.

Julia asks: I am recovering from a fracture to my tibial plateau and a recently bruised sternum (got a little stupid using a poorly adjusted upright rower @ the gym). Obviously, chest and weight bearing exercise is contraindicated. Do you have any creative exercises to share, particularly ones that can strengthen my lower body in some way.

~ In my response, I mention this article.

Carla asks: I'm very lean, normal BMI/BF% , mother of 3. I exercise 5 x a week (cardio/weights/plyometrics/hiit etc), but after 3 C-sections my abs are not responding and I can't get rid of the excess skin in the lower part of my abs. I am considering a tummy tuck. Is there any other way?

~ In my response to Carla, I mention 14 core exercises for when you're pregnant. I also mention skin firming creams from Green Cupboards.

Gregory says:I weigh 250 lbs and I'm 31 I want to get bigger arms but I want to loose weight, how do I go about doing this without using small weights? I was told that I should just do a bunch of cardio to drop the weight then start lifting. Others have suggested that I do a circuit with a high heart rate, like do some heavy weights then light weights at high rep then some quick cardio. So, how am I supposed to get/maintain some big muscles and trim down to like 225/230?

Testimonial from Chris @ 00:18:28In a period of 6 months every major aspect of my life - professional, personal and mental - hit complete failure. In a dark place, in incredibly bad health, recovering from a second lower spine surgery, scrambling after my startup company closed shop, spiraling from an incredibly bad (like Manti T'eo meets Catfish bad) relationship breakup, following a two week whiskey bender in Vegas, my older brother (Michael) answered my social network plea to help me hit the life reset button. Together we trained for and finished our first 70.3 triathlon in only 90 days. In the process I'm now in the best shape of my life and have achieved a new level of mental clarity and drive. My 70.3 race goals (in decreasing order) were to 1) finish the half-ironman 2) finish under 6:00:00 maximum 3) finish under 5:45:00 stretch 4) do not walk during the run leg 5) leave with a desire to continue training in endurance multi sports and 6) beat my brother -he beat me in both of our tune-up olympic distance triathlons. Is Alkaline Water A Scam? BodyChem says @ 00:22:30Kangen Water "a means of delivering alkaline water to your body". Is this a good thing to do for as source of hydration all the time or just now and then? ADHD Diet for Kids Breakfast says @ 00:30:51She has a 10-year-old son that will not eat breakfast. He is on an ADHD medication so he really needs to eat a breakfast with protein in it. Would you recommend a protein powder smoothie for breakfast? She read that Coronation Instant Breakfast was a good thing to give him (due to the vitamins and minerals). She doesn't want to give that to him but she does want to get some protein in with the meds. Losing weight after adrenal fatigue Fatloss says @ 00:40:59 Recovering from adrenal fatigue and wants to lose the 10lbs he put on while recovering. What would be the best way to lose the weight without risking a relapse? ~ In my response, I mention the CoolFatBurner.com vest and Focal furniture website. What is the best biohacking device? Jen says @ 00:50:20 She has a birthday coming up next month and wants to ask for a biohacking tool or electronic. What would be the best one be for the money that will tell her the most information? She does half and full marathons but mostly just goes to the gym and does group exercise classes. She already has a Garmin and a HR Monitor. ~ In my response, I mention the Azumio Argus + LifeTrak device OR the Zensorium Tinke OR the FitBit. We also mention the MindAlive therapy device. How to test your electrolytes Jeremy says @ 00:59:08 He is looking for a good way to track his electrolytes. Is there a way to know what you are specifically low on? He currently uses endurolytes (20 ounces of water and 4 endurolyte pills per hour) but doesn't know if that is the right ratio. ~ In my reply, I mention WellnessFX Baseline Test and DirectLabs Mineral Panel. I also talk about Onnit+ Himalayan Sea Salt or trace liquid minerals. How to train for speed and endurance at the same time Mathew says @ 01:04:30 He is doing a "stair race" in February (less than 5 minutes all out max effort) and then do a "50 mile running race" in May. He is worried that he does not have time to switch his body over in between. He has a solid base going into the training but is worried about training for both races almost at the same time. ~ In my response I mention this article on Power and Speed movements. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Podcast music from 80s Fitness (Reso Remix) by KOAN Sound. Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode

Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode

For the past 4 days, I've been living in the Rocky Mountain National Park - at above 9000 feet altitude in the depths of the Colorado wilderness. During each of those days, I took a 15-30 minute icy cold plunge into the big mountain lake... ...and there's a very specific reason why - something called "cold thermogenesis" (also known as "CT"). If you don't know what CT is - or why it can help you get massively tougher, burn fat faster, decrease inflammation, boost performance and build cardiovascular endurance, then today's Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode is for you. In this interview, I talk more about the topic of cold and fat loss with Tim Ferriss, and NASA materials engineer Ray Cronise. In this episode, we discuss: -Why weight loss experts are wrong when they say that “calories in=calories out” is the weight loss equation…. -What type of self-experiments Tim conducted to see whether changes in body temperature can result in weight loss… -Exactly how your biology responds to cold, and what it means for your rapid fat loss… -What to eat before cold exposure to make you lose even more fat, faster… -Practical ways to get instant cold exposure for weight loss… -The future of research and experimentation in cold exposure and fat loss… Due to the fact that I'm off to London this week to speak at the Global Triathlon Conference and do a Primality workshop with Darryl Edwards, we dug this extremely popular podcast episode out of our archives. If you want more resources on cold thermogenesis, then you're in luck. In addition to today's podcast, I'd highly recommend you check out the following: -The DeSoto Arm Coolers I'll be sporting during Ironman Hawaii this year -Tim's 4 Hour Body book -What Is A Body Cooling Device, and Does It Actually Work? -How You Can Use Cold Thermogenesis To Perform Like Lance Armstrong And Michael Phelps -Tips For Burning More Fat With Cold Thermogenesis (And Why Icing Really Does Work) -The BenGreenfieldFitness Premium content, which features an absolutely mind-blowing 1 hour cold thermogenesis lecture and slides by Ray Cronise Question, comments or feedback about cold thermogenesis? Have you tried cold thermogenesis? If so, what have you found successful? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How Hollywood Celebrities Can Look So Good Louis asks @ 00:25:51 I have been seeing a lot of articles talking about Hollywood actors that have been able to get into amazing shape for their roles and have done so by working out 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week. This seems to violate the rule of allowing for adequate recovery time and "over training", yet it seems like it's working for them judging by the results. So what gives? Is the importance of recovery time overstated or are these guys all using PED's to get into shape fast? ~ In my reply, I mention the body-typing fitness book at http://www.GetFitGuy.com What To Do When You Can't Eat Fresh Food Dom says @ 00:35:14 He normally eats lots of fresh food but his work is taking him away for 8 weeks to a place where all the food is packaged and stored for a long time. Could you recommend a supplement that will help him not feel sluggish from eating like this. ~ In my response, I mention the book "Eating On The Wild Side" and the "Healthy Travel Tips" video with Jessa and I and also the supplement "LivingFuel SuperGreens". I mention my previous episode on the race in Mongolia and my episode on the Boy Scout trip. In those podcasts, I had talked about Pemmican, Cocochia bars, and Supergreens. I also mention you can make your own beef jerky OR eat 200-300 calories of jerky from US Wellness Meats. You can also eat or swallow 25-50 EnergyBits and 5-10 Master Amino Pattern (MAP) capsules. Use 10% discount code “BEN” at EnergyBits.com and get MAP at pacificfit.net. Anemia From Your Gut Jasmine says @ 00:45:24 Her best friend who is 19-years-old and has only had her period once (when she was 12). She is slight, Swedish, has low iron and is gluten intolerant. Are there some tests she should get? What kind of diet should she be on? They want to avoid meds. ~ In my reply, I recommend the WellnessFX Performance panel and also the GI Effects panel from DirectLabs. I also discuss the Gut Fixing Pack, supplement Floradix and a gut healing diet such as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Natural Remedies for H-Pylori Nenad says @ 00:54:58 A few weeks ago he was diagnose with H-Pylori along with gut pain, bloating and irregular bowel movements. He wants to treat this naturally. Can he use Oil of Oregano to treat the infection? Is there another/better way? He has noticed a lack of energy and strength lately, could that be related? ~ In my reply to Nenad, I mention how I opted to take a high-grade oil of oregano four times per day and a supplement called mastic gum two times per day, and I was good to go within a month. I probably got lucky, because many times, parasitic infections require more serious medication and long term treatment. Often, it all depends on the type of parasite you have. What Is The Clear Skin Diet Hannah says @ 01:01:57 She is in her early 20s and did the "Clear Skin" diet and a bunch of topical stuff that the dermatologist recommended but nothing worked. She doesn't want to take an antibiotics - what would you recommend? ~ In my response to Hannah, I recommend a Paleo Autoimmune protocol. 5 Ways To Know If Your Workout Is Working Daniel asks @ 01:11:08 How do you assess a new regimen, whether it's a new diet, supplement, workout routine, etc , when there are an infinite amount of factors affecting how you feel day-to-day? Many of these influences may not even be known or considered. ~ In my response, I mention this study on traditional vs. circuit training. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question.
