Founded in 1955, this wine coop produces 1.5 million of bottles per year and it is one of the largest coops in Sardinia. Monty and Sergio talk about Giogantinu’s wines, including sparkling Vermentino and Cannonau-based wines such as their “Eja” (among others). Giogantinu also produces rosé, interesting blends with traditional and indigenous Sardinian grapes, and “mirto” the traditional berry liqueur from Sardinia. Welcome to Episode 1981 in which host McKenna Cassidy interviews Lorenzo Fornaini this week on The Next Generation.  During the interview, the young winemaker Lorenzo talks about his experience working along with Andrea Franchetti in both his wineries Tenuta di Trinoro in Val d’Orcia, where they make Bordeaux blend style wines being the soil reminiscent of that of Saint Emilion, and Passopisciaro on Etna, where the wines are the true expression of the different “contrade". According to Lorenzo, Etna is so popular because it meets the contemporary taste, just like the Cabernet Franc from Tenuta di Trinoro: the modern consumer looks for freshness and drinkability. More about today’s guest I was born on 1995 in the province of Pisa; Ponsacco is the name of the town. On my path in the world of wine, I studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Pisa. I experienced a few vintages in the Pisan hills area, Palaia-Terricciola, near my home. In 2017, I faced my first harvest at Tenuta di Trinoro, in Tuscany. It was supposed to be just an experience to then decide whether to continue my studies or leave Italy, but at the end of the 2017 harvest, Andrea Franchetti asked me if I would like to start something together and stay at Trinoro. The decision was already made. Gradually, I grew with his visions and my approach. After Trinoro, I started going down to Etna and discovering that fantastic world as well, and now I really enjoy working with both wineries. I can tell you that I am very happy to still be working here today and helping to continue what Andrea Franchetti created. I owe all my rapid growth to this man, who was a visionary and managed to make a significant impact on the wine world in just a few years. Wine had an important symbolic and cultural value for the Greeks, and was at the heart of Dionysian mysticism. During this masterclass, Professor Attilio Scienza will explore these topics and their legacy. If you want to learn more about the Professor: The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” in place of “Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. He began coming to the Barolo for harvests in 2007, working for 2-3 months with a different winemaker each vintage to learn the subtleties of each producer’s methods. In 2011, he moved to the area permanently, first working in the cellar of Luciano Sandrone and then at the Bartolo Mascarello and Cavallotto wineries. 2012 saw his first production of an experimental quantity of wine from a 1000 square meter vineyard on the Pernanno hill in Castiglione Falletto. In 2015 his vineyard holdings expanded enough to incorporate as an Azienda Agricola and commercial production of Barolo began with 2800 bottles made in that first 2015 vintage year. In 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo was added to the production. Currently the winery farms nearly 5 hectares of land and produces Barolo, Langhe Nebbiolo and a small amount of Chinato. Max production for the small M8 cantina is 12,000 bottles Barolo and 12,000 bottles Langhe Nebbiolo each vintage.
