Welcome to Episode 1971 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Lamberto and Lodovico Montresor this week on The Next Generation. Two brothers, fifth generation of Ottella wine producers, working together making different Lugana expressions, enhancing its complexity, versatility and ageability. All of that, in a family-run winery that combines modern art, architecture, sustainability, biodiversity and nature on Lake Garda. More about today’s guest The Montresor family has been at the helm of Ottella winery for four generations. The company was started by Lodovico, father of Francesco and Michele, a wine entrepreneur and passionate collector of artworks. In the book "The province of Verona and its wines, 1900", the historian Giovan Battista Perez testifies how the Montresor family was, in 1905, the only one to produce Lugana in the Verona area. In 1964 Lodovico Montresor, together with Professor Michele Vescia of the University of Brescia and the engineer Turlini, had the intuition to design and delimit this very precious area called Lugana, giving it its own geographical conformation and its own identity. The result was the birth of the Lugana appellation three years later, in 1967. In the mid-eighties, Ottella acquired new impetus when Francesco, freshly graduated in law, joined his father. Francesco Montresor, President of the Lugana Protection Consortium from 2007 to 2013, was then joined in 1993 by Michele, current president of the Venetian Winemakers Association. In 2013 the project for the new winery began: a unique place, intended to represent the values of the company, the love for the vineyard, the landscape and art. Ep. 1969 Piemonte Travel Series: Chiara Boschis | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to Episode 1969 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim heads to the the Piedmont region of northern Italy where she meets Chiara Boschis of Azienda Agricola E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Discover the history of the ancient estate where the winery is located, the development of this extraordinary family winery, and the winemaking techniques involved in producing its famous Barolo wines. More about the winery: The Piras were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century, who also became winemakers between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old school of production, created his wines by assembling grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He maintained that, just as cows must graze on the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop there: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker carry out the pressing and production by foot without the support of any technical means. Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her passion for wine and her world full time, becoming one of the first female producers of Barolo at the end of the 1980s. By taking care of this "little big house" she brought a breath of renewal to the cellar and in the production style. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined in the ownership of the company by her brother Giorgio who shares with her the great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also with thirty years of experience. The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic cultivation, for which the company has been certified since the 2014 harvest. Production is very limited (around 40,000 bottles per year), coming from directly produced grapes.
