Joker 2 Digital Release Date Announced Amid Box Office Struggles

The much-anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Joker has made headlines again, but not necessarily for the reasons fans might have hoped. Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, hit theaters on October 4, but has since struggled both critically and at the box office. Now, the film’s digital release date has been announced, giving fans a chance to watch it from home sooner than expected.

Despite the original Joker earning over $1 billion at the box office in 2019, its sequel is facing a much tougher climb. Joker: Folie à Deux cost an estimated $190 to $200 million to make but has only earned around $120 million since its release—falling far short of expectations. With early reviews pouring in from festivals like Venice, the movie currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 33% from critics and an equally dismal 32% audience score based on over 5,000 verified views.

The critical response has been decidedly mixed. While many reviews have been negative, there are some who praise the film's darker tone and character exploration. Geoffrey Macnab from The Independent gave the film four stars, noting: “The darkness at the core of the film is underlined by its very brutal ending, which rejects comic book conventions in favor of psychological depth.” He also emphasized Phoenix’s powerful performance, saying we still care for Arthur Fleck despite his obvious flaws.

However, audience reactions have been less forgiving. The movie earned a rare D CinemaScore from opening day audiences, a tough blow for a film of this caliber. For fans who loved the first film’s deep dive into Arthur’s psyche, this may feel like a misstep, while others appreciate the film’s refusal to lean into typical comic book movie tropes.

For those who missed the theatrical release or are waiting to watch it at home, the good news is that Joker: Folie à Deux will be available on digital platforms starting October 29, 2024. This quick turnaround is significantly faster than the original film, which took two months before arriving on streaming platforms. The decision to fast-track the digital release may reflect the movie's underperformance at the box office, a trend we’ve seen in other films like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, which also quickly moved to Prime Video.

The future of the Joker franchise remains uncertain, especially given the film’s rocky reception.
