“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Some highlights of Nick’s struggles and healthy habits: Physically he’s thankful for the holy spirit and caffeine! He only eats 2 meals per day, more veggies, but he’s an admitted carnivore. No sweets, bread or dairy. He and his family grow much of their food and live off their land. He had a pretty deep financial crisis and learned that just because you have a vision and resources from God, it doesn’t always mean you have to move forward right now. He has a 10 year plan that took him three hours to create, with help. And 3% of his life has to be a gamble! But he doesn’t invent, he innovates! It was rich, as you can tell. Some highlights: He’s a soccer fan and is almost always playing on a team or two. Being active with his young kids is a big part of his physical fitness regime. He started eating better for his kid’s sake! He’s big on managing family time amongst the entrepreneurial lifestyle and is a staunch proponent of Rules and Boundaries. Mentally Stu puts a high level of importance on having confidence in ourselves. He believes fear is like a muscle and you must work it out, so he’s routinely looking for things to do that stretch his fear muscle. Financially he loves being an  entrepreneur where you can make an  unlimited amount of money and feels the more money we make the more impact we can have. He and his wife have built 11 schools in Kenya that on average serve 4-700 kids. Personally he just loves creating experiences and celebrating others.
