Bryan Kohberger Did THIS To The People Who Saved Him

The Kohberger family rebuilt their son from the ground up. Addiction treatment, two degrees, a doctoral program across the country. They used the word "proud" publicly, and they'd put in the years to say it.

That word now sits next to four consecutive life sentences handed down by Judge Steven Hippler, a son who walked out of a courtroom past his own mother without turning his head, and a handwritten post-conviction petition filed July 27 naming the defense lawyers who saved his life as incompetent.

Bryan is representing himself. He told a reporter at the New York Times before he told his family.

But the petition isn't where this starts. In 2014, nineteen-year-old Bryan — days out of rehab, sleeping in his father's house, eating his father's food — stole his sister's phone, sold it for cash at a mall kiosk, and told his father "don't do anything stupid" when he was caught. His father called the police on his own son. Monroe County's diversion program wiped the record. And the family fixed him anyway.

This letter is addressed directly to that family. To the mother who sat through the impact statements. The sister who keeps annual birthday reminders for each of the four victims. The family that still bakes a cake on his birthday to specifications he sends from prison.

The argument isn't to stop loving him. It's that whatever they owed has been paid. That letting go costs nothing except an audience — and audience is the only currency Bryan has ever spent.
