4 Parkinson’s Discoveries That Sound Impossible but Are Real | WHO KNEW?

What do low-fat milk, organizing drawers for hours, involuntary movements, and a fake medication have in common?

Believe it or not, they all have surprising connections to Parkinson’s!

Welcome back to WHO KNEW?, where we explore the strange, fascinating, and sometimes unbelievable side of Parkinson’s research.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we're exploring four discoveries that made me stop and say, “Wait... WHAT?!”

We talk about:

• Low-fat dairy and Parkinson’s risk: Why researchers have found an association between higher consumption of skim and low-fat milk and Parkinson’s, without proving that dairy causes the disease.

• Punding: A little-known behavior sometimes associated with dopamine replacement therapy, where someone becomes intensely focused on repetitive activities like sorting, organizing, or collecting, sometimes for hours without accomplishing anything.

• Dyskinesia awareness: Why someone with Parkinson’s may genuinely be less aware of their involuntary movements than the people watching them.

• The Parkinson’s placebo effect: How researchers using brain imaging observed measurable dopamine release in some people who believed they were receiving an active treatment, even when the treatment was inactive.

And yes, that last one is absolutely fascinating.

The treatment was fake. The dopamine response wasn't.

But that doesn't mean Parkinson’s can be cured through positive thinking or that medication is unnecessary. It shows just how complex the brain's response to expectation can be.

You'll also hear Carmen joining me for Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where she shares her own WHO KNEW? discovery about noticing dyskinesia movements that I sometimes don't realize I'm making.

And naturally, Carmen manages to be right again. 😂

Her Carmen-ism?

“Sometimes love means noticing what Parkinson’s forgot to mention.”

Because Parkinson’s research continues to reveal that there's much more happening inside our brains and bodies than we ever imagined.

And sometimes even the scientists are surprised.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
