4 Surprising Parkinson’s Connections Hiding in Your Body | WHO KNEW?

What do facial redness, an eye exam, strange nighttime movements, and skin cancer have in common?

Believe it or not, researchers have found surprising connections between all four and Parkinson’s disease!

Welcome back to WHO KNEW?, where we explore unusual research, hidden symptoms, and discoveries that make you wonder how nobody told us about this before.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we're exploring four fascinating connections:

• Rosacea and Parkinson’s: Why researchers found an association between this common skin condition and an increased likelihood of developing Parkinson’s.

• Eye scans and early detection: How researchers discovered subtle retinal changes in OCT eye scans taken years before some people received a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

• REM sleep behavior disorder: Why talking, shouting, kicking, or acting out dreams during sleep can sometimes be an important neurological clue.

• Parkinson’s and melanoma: Why studies have found an unexpected association between Parkinson’s and this serious form of skin cancer.

And that eye scan discovery is particularly fascinating.

Researchers found retinal differences in scans taken approximately seven years before a Parkinson’s diagnosis!

That doesn't mean an eye exam can currently diagnose Parkinson’s, but it opens some interesting possibilities for future research.

You'll also hear Carmen joining me for Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where she shares her own WHO KNEW? about REM sleep behavior disorder.

Sometimes the person with Parkinson’s has no idea what happened overnight.

But the care partner?

They witnessed the entire production! 😂

Carmen reminds us that unusual nighttime behaviors deserve attention, especially when there's a risk of injury.

Because Parkinson’s isn't just about tremors, stiffness, and movement.

Sometimes the clues are hiding in our skin, our eyes, our sleep, and places nobody thought to look.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
